This room-by-room walkthrough covers the main puzzle chain in The Room: Old Sins, including linked-room item uses, the eyepiece, and recovery options. The game’s progress items are not the same as optional collectibles: books and journal entries add story context, while coins, map pieces, and mechanism parts advance puzzles. The available walkthroughs do not establish a definitive optional-collectible checklist or total.

How to use this walkthrough

The Room: Old Sins is a puzzle adventure set inside and around a dollhouse in Waldegrave Manor. Edward Lockwood and his wife Abigail have disappeared, and you explore unsettling rooms and contraptions in search of a precious artefact. The publisher describes the game as: “Explore unsettling locations, follow obscure clues and manipulate bizarre contraptions to uncover the mysteries within Waldegrave Manor.” Fireproof Games’ official game page

Progress is connected across rooms, so this is not always a straight-line itinerary. If an item has no obvious use where you found it, note its shape and revisit the dollhouse exterior or an earlier room after opening a new mechanism. For image-led puzzles where the written walkthrough does not specify exact positions, follow the visible diagram in the game rather than relying on guessed coordinates.

Using the eyepiece

Open the eyepiece from your inventory, then activate it when a colored veil appears over a surface or object. It reveals hidden marks, symbols, and mechanisms. Many seals and room puzzles require you to inspect the concealed detail through the eyepiece before acting.

What counts as a collectible?

Books and journal entries are story clues; coins, crests, map pieces, and mechanism parts are progression tools. Finding these does not make them optional collectibles. The published walkthroughs do not verify a complete optional-item list or an official collectible total, so this guide does not claim one.

Attic tutorial: open the dollhouse

  1. Open the briefcase latches and take the screwdriver. Inspect the notebook, photographs, clipping, and map for story context.
  2. Use the screwdriver on the floodlight latch. Slide the two circuit pieces into a connected position to turn on the light and reveal the dollhouse.
  3. Find the eyepiece in the case’s hidden compartment and open its bronze knob.
  4. Look through the eyepiece at the dollhouse entrance. Set the hallway objects as follows: chair all the way left with its back to the wall, picture frame at the top, and chandelier in the middle.
  5. Use the eyepiece to break the revealed symbol and enter the Foyer.

Foyer: coins, constellations, and the box

Find the coins and family crest

  1. Inspect the etiquette book and read Abigail’s journal entry.
  2. Open the odd box’s lower dial compartment and take the brass mechanical coin. Slide its parts into a pinwheel shape, then place it in the matching side slot.
  3. Look through the eyepiece at the constellation field. Rotate its dials until the stars match the fixed yellow outline, then take the family crest.
  4. Place the family crest in its matching slot on the dollhouse exterior.
  5. Rotate the reindeer statue until its two dial arrows align. Take the silver mechanical coin, reshape it into a pinwheel, and put it in the other box slot.
  6. Match the second constellation outline to reveal the ornate metal panel. Keep this panel for the exterior balcony mechanism.

Open the box

  1. Uncover the two yellow buttons and press them at the same time.
  2. For the next mechanism, use the movable lock and dial to expose button pairs. Press each matching pair simultaneously.
  3. In the three-button stage, reposition the top and bottom locks and turn the dial to expose each matching pair; press each pair together.
  4. Take the strange artefact from the box and activate it to reveal a swan figurine. The Foyer is then covered by black growth and complete.

Dollhouse exterior: open the Study

  1. Place the swan figurine on the empty pedestal by the gate. Take the model lamp from the pedestal’s drawer and install it on the missing dollhouse lamppost.
  2. Fit the ornate metal panel into the empty balcony position at the back of the dollhouse.
  3. On the panel, match the right-side gear arrows to the fixed pattern on the left. First use the four corner gears to point the middle arrow down. Then set the corner arrows: top-left north, top-right northeast, bottom-left south, and bottom-right southeast.
  4. Use the eyepiece to break the newly revealed entrance seal and enter the Study.

Study: desk, safe, and model well

Open the roll-top desk

  1. Read Edward’s entry in the steam-engine manual.
  2. At the desk’s circular selector, move through the growth sequence in order: seed, leaf, tree.
  3. Inspect the compartments that open and use the eyepiece on newly revealed surfaces to uncover additional desk mechanisms.
  4. Take the fire steel from the quarter-circle compartment. Open the small drawer on the black safe and take the four-hole medallion.
  5. Separate the medallion into its pieces. Use the shaped metal piece to open the desk’s bar lock.
  6. Continue through the matching-symbol puzzles and take the crank handle.

Solve the crank puzzle

Move the red moon and blue triangle through the turning slot. Their shapes invert as they cross from one side to the other, so account for that reversal when lining them up. The resulting model well part belongs in the yard; install it there to start the next chain of mechanisms.

Curiosity Room: globe and light paths

The Curiosity Room’s globe puzzles use map pieces and a sequence of structures. Place each map piece in its matching globe slot, orient the highlighted region beneath the lens, and use the eyepiece to reveal a structure. The goal is to route a ball of light through the structure to its target.

Tower, pyramid, and ship

  • In the tower, rotate the second, fourth, and sixth movable segments to form a continuous light path.
  • Later structures include a pyramid and a ship. Move their segments, sails, vents, and connectors to carry the light to the goal.

Final globe mechanism

The globe’s final puzzle routes a laser. Reposition the portal-like pieces and reflectors until the beam reaches its destination. The available written directions do not specify a reliable sequence of exact positions for these image-led routes, so use the in-game beam path and diagram as your guide.

Tiki mask and Anubis mask

Adjust the wooden tiki mask to mirror its metal counterpart after adding the carved wood jaw. This reveals a bracket for an Anubis mask. The Anubis mask exposes a gemstone, which opens another display-case compartment and gives you an ornate iron. These are parts in the progression chain, not identified optional collectibles.

Kitchen and Study: restore the steam and electricity chain

  1. Fit the metal handle to the Kitchen cabinet.
  2. Use the fire steel in the furnace mechanism, then turn the furnace crank clockwise to ignite the coal and release a valve handle.
  3. Set the valve to direct water through the pipes.
  4. Return to the Study. Close the steam outlet and position the paired handles to build pressure.
  5. Lock the horizontal pipe, route steam through the brass orb, and install a pipe connector.
  6. Once steam powers the central electrical machine, use its handles to reveal another strange artefact.

This sequence illustrates why revisiting rooms matters: tools found elsewhere can unlock a mechanism that seemed complete or inaccessible earlier.

Continue through the remaining rooms

The later walkthrough continues through the Maritime Room, Garden, Japanese Gallery, Art Studio, and a return to the Attic. Treat these as linked exploration rather than assuming each room must be finished once and never revisited. When a puzzle remains blocked, inspect newly collected parts and revisit machinery or display cases that match their shape.

Books and journal entries provide story information; the coins, crest, map pieces, masks, and mechanical parts described above serve the puzzle progression. Neither the room coverage nor the available platform listings establish a complete optional-collectible checklist, an official collectible count, or which items are missable.

Hints, rollback, and device help

If you are stuck

Fireproof recommends checking the in-game hints when progress may depend on a missed action. Its help page also suggests restarting the device or app. If you suspect a progression bug, pause and tap the “Game Paused” text five times to open the hidden rollback menu, then choose the last room opened. In that menu, “Attic” refers to a room near the end of the game, not the opening tutorial.

Maritime Room Strongbox issue

Fireproof’s support page documents a workaround for a Strongbox bug in the Maritime Room: roll back to the Japanese Gallery and replay some progress. This is a dated support note, not confirmation that the issue remains active in every current version.

Platform controls and compatibility

Available versions include PC on Steam, iPhone and iPad on the Apple App Store, Android on Google Play, and Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s UK listing says the Switch version supports touch-screen and Joy-Con motion controls. Fireproof’s Android guidance lists OpenGL ES 3.0 and more than 1 GB of RAM as base requirements, while warning that meeting them does not guarantee compatibility. Check the current listing for your device and region before purchasing; store prices, discounts, and support details can change.
