The Royal Writ is a single-player roguelike deckbuilder built around a sharp tactical trade-off: send your animal units toward the enemy base to deal damage, and you may lose them for the rest of the run. That lane-based combat makes it stand apart from familiar card battlers, though its situational cards and layered rules may not suit players who want reliable, repeatable builds.
What is The Royal Writ?
Developed by Save Sloth Studios and published by Yogscast Games, The Royal Writ turns cards into units that advance across a battlefield. The official Steam description puts the idea simply: “In The Royal Writ, you don’t just play cards – you command them on the battlefield.” Instead of treating cards only as effects to play and discard, you send them into lanes, where position, terrain and changing column modifiers shape the fight.
The game wraps that system in a cast of peculiar, battle-hardened animals and a tone of medieval absurdity. The publisher describes two campaigns, each with distinct cards and bosses, alongside NPC encounters and relics that can change how a run plays. Those are product-description details; whether the variety is enough to keep a particular player engaged depends on how much they enjoy adapting from fight to fight.
How combat and permanent card loss work
You send units through one to three lanes toward the opposing base. Their progress and the damage they can deal depend on where they are and on the modifiers affecting their column; terrain may help or hinder them. The goal is to work out which units can reach a useful position and when pushing forward is worth the risk.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A unit that reaches the enemy base before you win can be permanently lost for the remainder of that run. This makes card loss a tactical cost, not simply a deckbuilding adjustment between battles. A sacrifice can help secure damage now, but it also removes a tool you might have needed later. The central question is therefore not just which card to play, but whether the result is worth giving up that unit.
The unusual system is the game’s clearest strength. TheXboxHub’s October 2, 2026 review praised the inventiveness of lane combat and permanent card loss, while also describing the rules as layered. The official publisher page calls the gameplay intuitive; those descriptions can coexist: the basic idea is easy to grasp, while making good decisions may take practice.

What works—and what may frustrate
A distinctive tactical hook
Advancing units, lane positioning and the possibility of losing a card give each push a consequence that conventional card-play conventions often avoid. The cutest unit may also be one you cannot afford to spend. That contrast between picture-book animal art and run-long losses gives the game’s dark humor a practical edge rather than making it only a visual joke.
Adaptation over dependable combos
Relics, terrain, column modifiers and changing card situations offer room to adjust your approach. The trade-off is that synergies may not always feel dependable. TheXboxHub reviewer found some cards and relics situational and said the game did not hold their interest over a longer period. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a universal verdict, but it flags a real preference question: enjoy improvising with an imperfect hand, or prefer a build that reliably comes together?

Replay goals, with no guaranteed staying power
Two campaigns, bosses, NPC encounters, relics and unlockable challenges provide reasons to return and try different approaches. They do not guarantee that every player will want to keep replaying. TheXboxHub’s assessment was that the systems did not sustain that reviewer’s interest over time, despite the initial originality.
Is The Royal Writ worth playing?
The Royal Writ is a strong fit if you want a deckbuilder where positioning and sacrifice matter as much as card selection, and you are willing to learn a system that may not offer consistent synergies. Its core idea gives routine turns meaningful stakes, while the animal presentation and darkly comic tone make those stakes memorable.

It is a more tentative recommendation if you prefer clear, dependable combos or want a game that quickly becomes comfortable through repetition. TheXboxHub scored it 3.5/5 in its 2026 review, praising its inventive combat but criticizing the situational feel of some cards and relics and its longer-term pull. That is an individual outlet’s rating, not a consensus score.
On Steam, the store page showed 96% positive from 31 recent reviews and 80% positive from 423 all-time reviews when accessed October 3, 2026. These are changing platform figures, with different review groups and denominators—not a fixed rating or a substitute for an individual review.
