On May 29, 2024, a report attributed to GPU leaker Kopite7kimi said Nvidia might reverse its recent trend of oversized flagship cards and give the RTX 5090 Founders Edition a dual-slot, dual-fan cooler. Nvidia had not confirmed the design then. The product that eventually shipped matched the central physical prediction: the Founders Edition is two slots thick and uses two fans in Nvidia’s unusual Double Flow Through cooling system. The early leak was directionally right, but its unconfirmed power and engineering details should not be treated as official specifications.
What the May 2024 report actually claimed
The original report, published by TweakTown on May 29, 2024, described a “serious design reversal.” Information attributed to Kopite7kimi suggested that Nvidia could move the RTX 5090 Founders Edition from the three-slot class associated with the RTX 3090, RTX 3090 Ti and RTX 4090 to a dual-slot, dual-fan layout.

That was a rumor, not an Nvidia announcement. At publication, Nvidia had not disclosed the RTX 5090’s final specifications or cooler. The report speculated that a wider memory bus and GDDR7 might make a redesigned PCB and cooler arrangement possible, but it did not establish that those features caused the smaller design.
Why a two-slot flagship seemed unlikely
Recent high-end Founders Edition cards had made thick coolers normal. More powerful GPUs generally need more fin area, heat-transfer hardware, airflow capacity or power-management headroom. A two-slot RTX 5090 therefore sounded counterintuitive, especially as later leaks described a very high-power flagship.

#1 Best Overall
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Slot thickness is only one engineering variable, however. Vapor-chamber geometry, heat-pipe routing, fin placement, fan pressure, PCB packaging and power control can change how much cooler volume is required. “Larger” is not automatically better, and “two-slot” does not by itself describe a card’s length, width or thermal behavior.
What Nvidia ultimately shipped
Nvidia’s current RTX 5090 specifications page lists the Founders Edition as a two-slot card measuring 304 mm long and 137 mm wide. Teardown coverage from TweakTown describes two axial fans and Nvidia’s Double Flow Through arrangement.
The cooler is not simply a conventional small open-air heatsink. A compact PCB sits inside the assembly. A 3D vapor chamber draws heat from the GPU and nearby components, five heat pipes distribute it, and three heatsink sections provide separate fin-stack areas. The two fans drive air through that structure rather than relying solely on exhaust through the rear bracket.
That makes the rumor accurate about the broad physical result and cooling architecture, while leaving the original leak’s detailed assumptions separate from Nvidia’s eventual product.
Official RTX 5090 Founders Edition specifications
| Specification | Official value or status |
|---|---|
| CUDA cores | 21,760 |
| Memory | 32GB GDDR7 |
| Memory interface | 512-bit |
| Dimensions | 304 mm long × 137 mm wide |
| Slot thickness | Two-slot Founders Edition specification |
| Total graphics power | 575W |
| Recommended system power | 1,000W in Nvidia’s specification table; system requirements vary by configuration |
| Power connection | 600W PCIe Gen 5 cable or an adapter using multiple PCIe 8-pin cables |
A later September 2024 report repeated leaked figures of 21,760 CUDA cores, 32GB of GDDR7, a 512-bit bus, a 600W rating and a compact cooler. The first four core, memory and bus figures match Nvidia’s published specifications. The power figure does not: Nvidia’s official total graphics power is 575W, so 600W should be labeled as an earlier leak rather than the final rating.
What “dual-slot” means when you install it
Dual-slot primarily describes the card’s thickness at the expansion bracket. It can leave the neighboring motherboard slot physically available, which is valuable for capture cards, sound cards or other expansion hardware. It does not mean the RTX 5090 is a small card.
- The body is still 304 mm long and 137 mm wide.
- The power connector and cable bend can require additional side-panel clearance.
- The card can obstruct airflow around an otherwise open neighboring slot.
- Nvidia’s installation guidance asks users to reserve three unused expansion slots and to provide extra room for airflow and power cables, despite the published two-slot thickness.
This apparent conflict is practical rather than contradictory: the bracket occupies two slots, while safe installation may need more open space around the card, connector and airflow path.
Why the cooler can handle a high-power GPU in two slots
The important innovation is the complete packaging strategy, not merely the number of fans. The compact PCB leaves room for a vapor chamber and heat pipes to spread heat across multiple fin sections. The Double Flow Through layout sends air through the cooler in different directions, allowing the card to use both sides of its heatsink volume within a slim enclosure.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce Card
- Axial-tech fans feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
Because this arrangement moves substantial heat into the case as well as toward the rear, case ventilation remains critical. A two-slot cooler can fit beside another card and still raise internal temperatures if intake and exhaust paths are restricted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the RTX 5090 Founders Edition suitable for a small-form-factor PC?
It is more SFF-friendly than many three- or four-slot RTX 5090 partner cards, and Nvidia identifies the Founders Edition as an SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce Card. That label is not a universal compatibility guarantee.
Check these measurements and requirements
- Confirm that the case supports at least 304 mm of GPU length, including any front fans, radiator or drive cage that reduces usable space.
- Confirm 137 mm of width and enough room between the card, side panel and power connector.
- Check the manufacturer’s actual thickness limit. Partner RTX 5090 boards may be substantially thicker than the Founders Edition.
- Verify the power supply, native PCIe Gen 5 cable or approved adapter, and cable-bend clearance.
- Assess intake and exhaust paths for a 575W GPU; a small enclosure can recirculate warm air and increase fan speed.
- Check motherboard heatsinks, M.2 hardware, riser cables, front-panel connectors and radiator placement for interference.
Nvidia’s page includes an 850W minimum in one preparation section and shows 1,000W in its specification table. Treat those as configuration-dependent guidance, not a promise that every system has the same requirement. PSU quality, CPU power, transient behavior and the chosen cabling all matter.
Rumor scorecard
| Early claim | Outcome |
|---|---|
| The RTX 5090 Founders Edition could be dual-slot | Correct for the shipped Founders Edition |
| It could use two fans | Broadly correct; the fans are part of a Double Flow Through cooler |
| It could have a 512-bit memory bus | Correct in Nvidia’s official specification |
| It could have 32GB of GDDR7 | Correct in Nvidia’s official specification |
| The final card would be rated at 600W | Not exact; Nvidia lists 575W total graphics power |
| Every RTX 5090 would be compact | Unsupported; add-in-board dimensions vary by manufacturer |
Common fit and buying mistakes
- Calling two-slot “small.” The Founders Edition remains long and wide.
- Applying Founders Edition dimensions to every RTX 5090. ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, PNY and other partner designs can be thicker or longer.
- Using 600W as the official rating. The published Nvidia figure is 575W total graphics power.
- Ignoring cable clearance. A case can accept the card body while pressing the connector against the side panel.
- Confusing an open slot with a cool system. Slot access does not guarantee adequate intake or exhaust.
- Checking only GPU length. Width, PSU cabling, risers, radiators and motherboard hardware can still prevent installation.
Bottom line for RTX 5090 buyers
The May 2024 report was unusually accurate about the Founders Edition’s physical direction. Nvidia ultimately shipped a genuine two-slot card with two fans and an advanced flow-through cooler, validating the core prediction without validating every early leaked number. For a build decision, use Nvidia’s official 304 × 137 mm dimensions, 575W total graphics power and clearance guidance—and then verify the exact case, PSU and cable requirements. The RTX 5090 Founders Edition is slimmer than its predecessors, not universally small.
