Backbone+ explained: What the paid membership includes, how 1080p/60fps recording works, and whether it’s worth it

Backbone+ is an optional app subscription, not a requirement for Backbone One. Here is what the 2021 announcement promised, what the membership offers now, how 1080p/60fps capture really works, and who should pay.

Backbone+ is an optional software membership, not a requirement for using a Backbone One controller. The headline refers to Backbone Labs’ November 4, 2021 announcement, when the company overhauled its iOS companion app and introduced premium recording, streaming and social tools. The service still exists, but its features, trial terms and price should be checked in your regional app store rather than inferred from the 2021 launch coverage.

What Backbone announced on November 4, 2021

Backbone Labs announced Backbone+, a paid tier layered onto the Backbone app. The launch focused primarily on iPhone and iOS 15, adding a social and discovery layer around the Backbone One controller. The headline recording claim came from upgraded capture tools, not from making games themselves render at a higher resolution or frame rate.

Contemporary coverage described 1080p/60fps recording, Smart Recording that could save the previous 15 seconds, direct Twitch streaming, party screen sharing, cross-game voice chat, improved game search and app performance. The announcement also promoted wired use of Backbone One with iPad, Mac and PC, plus access points for services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and Google Stadia. See the original reports from MobileSyrup and TechCrunch.

What Backbone+ includes now

Backbone’s current materials describe Backbone+ as a premium membership inside the free Backbone app. The exact mix can change by platform and market, but the current feature emphasis is broader than the original announcement.

Backbone’s current overview is at backbone.com/pages/backbone-plus, with additional perk details in its membership support article.

What “1080p/60fps recording” actually means

The app can capture gameplay video at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second on supported iPhone configurations. It does not force a game, remote-play stream or cloud-gaming service to run at 1080p/60fps. The source game may render at a different resolution or frame rate, and the capture path, phone, operating system, storage and encoder all matter.

  • Backbone says HEVC is supported for 60fps recording and is enabled by default in its FAQ.
  • Select high-end devices can support bitrates of up to 30 Mbps.
  • Backbone’s Android documentation lists recording at the device’s native screen resolution at 30fps, so the iPhone claim should not be generalized to Android.
  • DRM-protected PlayStation content can appear as a black screen when captured through Backbone’s tools.

Read the device-specific specifications at Backbone’s recording-quality guide.

What remains free without Backbone+

Canceling or declining the membership does not turn a Backbone One into a nonfunctional controller. Backbone’s free app and controller experience include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Playing compatible controller games, including use without opening the app where the game supports it.
  • Firmware updates, joystick calibration, button testing and remapping.
  • Screenshots and Play On Any Screen functionality.
  • The hardware’s one-year warranty.

Backbone explicitly says the membership is not required for core controller use. See the free-app FAQ and the controller-use requirements.

Who pays, and what happened to the lifetime offer?

The 2021 launch policy

TechCrunch reported that existing Backbone One owners received lifetime access when Backbone+ launched. New buyers received one free year, followed by an expected fee of approximately $50 per year. That was a launch-era policy, not a permanent universal price or entitlement.

The current policy

Backbone’s current page says a Backbone One purchase includes a free Backbone+ trial. The trial can renew automatically at the current regional price unless canceled. Backbone does not publish one globally reliable price: the amount and billing interval are shown through the applicable app-store subscription flow. A U.S. App Store listing has surfaced several in-app purchase values, including $3.99, $29.99, $39.99 and $49.99, but the listing does not make the standard billing interval sufficiently clear to use those figures as a universal price. Check your own store listing and checkout screen.

The promotional lifetime membership for qualifying owners who purchased before November 4, 2021 has closed. Users who already have that entitlement can retain it while keeping the same active Backbone account; current purchasers should not assume they receive lifetime access.

Trial, renewal and cancellation

  1. Buy or activate a Backbone One and set up an account in the Backbone app.
  2. Redeem or complete setup for the trial according to the instructions shown in your region.
  3. Record the renewal date, price and billing interval displayed at checkout.
  4. Cancel through the relevant Apple subscription settings before renewal if the premium features are not worth the regional price.
  5. Keep the Backbone account if you may return later; Backbone says account data remains available if you resubscribe.

Because trial length and billing can vary by region and platform, rely on the confirmation screen rather than a universal number. The current terms are outlined at Backbone’s Backbone+ page.

Is Backbone+ worth paying for?

It is easier to justify when you will use several premium tools

  • You regularly create clips and need 1080p/60fps iPhone capture, editing and cloud storage.
  • You stream mobile gameplay to Twitch.
  • You want one launcher for mobile games, Xbox, Steam and supported remote-play or cloud services.
  • Your group uses Backbone parties, screen sharing or chat.
  • You are an Android user who benefits from TouchSync and live in a market where it is offered.
  • You will actually use the rewards, trials or accessory discounts.

It is harder to justify for basic controller use

  • You mainly want a physical gamepad and do not need Backbone’s social layer.
  • Your phone’s native recorder already meets your needs.
  • You rarely use the controller or dislike recurring subscriptions.
  • You expect Android to deliver the same documented 1080p/60fps capture mode as iPhone.
  • Your main content is DRM-protected PlayStation Remote Play or another unsupported capture path.

Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam, PlayStation Remote Play and other services remain separate services with their own accounts, subscriptions and compatibility requirements; Backbone+ is an app layer, not a general cloud-gaming catalog.

Subscription-free alternatives

Users who do not need Backbone’s unified launcher or social tools can combine a standard mobile controller with the phone’s native screen recorder, platform-native Xbox, PlayStation or Steam apps, or another controller ecosystem. Razer’s Kishi family (razer.com) and GameSir’s mobile controllers (gamesir.hk) are hardware alternatives, but exact feature parity and current prices require checking each manufacturer’s current documentation.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
