The Sims 4 Error Code 109 is not one specific problem, and EA has not said that every 109 error is solved. The company has fixed several causes tied to particular saves and subcodes, but other causes may still trigger the game’s loading failure. Protect your saves first, then test without Mods and use a clean game folder to narrow down whether the problem follows downloaded content or a particular save.
What Sims 4 Error Code 109 means
Error 109 is a broad loading or save failure, not a diagnosis on its own. EA has documented separate incidents with different complete codes and causes, including a household that would not load, a save containing a Clone Sim with an incorrectly set household status, and a historical issue affecting players without the Get Famous pack. Those incidents do not establish one explanation for every player who sees 109.
That distinction matters when looking for a fix: record the full code after 109, not just the first three digits. Include what you were doing when it appeared, your platform, and your game version when asking for help. EA says the game version is shown in the lower-left corner of the Main Menu in its Mods and game updates guidance.
Has EA fixed Error Code 109?
EA has fixed some specific causes, but the code can still have other causes. In a November 2025 update about save-file investigations, The Sims Team said it had resolved the causes behind 109:4fe45107 and 109:d7e16575 in the saves players had submitted. The team cautioned: “This does not mean that these error codes will no longer occur, but we can confirm that we’ve resolved the issue that was triggering the error in the provided saves.” Read the November 2025 update.

In December 2025, EA described one save-corruption case associated with 109:4fe45107:239aa048. The submitted save contained a Clone Sim with an incorrectly set household status; EA said its fix prevents that state from crashing on load. This is a fix for that reported state, not proof that every 109 error has the same cause. See EA’s December 2, 2025 update notes.
There is also a historical example: EA’s June 10, 2020 patch notes list a fix for 109:e56fc6bb:dc1a1b58, which prevented some households from loading for players who did not have Get Famous installed. That older compatibility fix does not identify the cause of a current error. Read the June 10, 2020 notes.

How to troubleshoot Error Code 109 without risking your saves
Work from reversible checks toward testing individual files. EA’s reset process uses a clean folder to separate problems in the game’s previous user files from problems that persist in a fresh setup. Make a copy of your Sims 4 folder before moving or resetting anything, and keep the original save files intact throughout the process. Follow EA’s backup and reset guide for the folder locations and reset steps.
1. Note the complete error and what triggered it
Write down the full code, the action that produced it (for example, loading a household), your platform, and the game version. The complete code may help distinguish your case from an EA-documented incident; “109” alone cannot.

2. Test the game with Mods disabled
Mods can cause save-loading failures, so temporarily disable them and check whether the game loads. EA recommends checking the game before re-enabling Mods after an update. If you are following EA’s post-update test, exit without saving: saving before custom content is restored may remove that content from the save.
If the game loads without Mods, check the creators’ current compatibility notes and add Mods back in batches until you isolate a problematic one. EA’s common error-code guidance does not list 109 as a general Mod-related code, so a successful test without Mods is a clue to investigate your installed content, not proof that all 109 errors are caused by Mods.

3. Try a clean Sims 4 folder
If disabling Mods does not settle the issue, use EA’s reset-and-restore procedure. The game starts without your old save files and Mods in the clean-folder test. If it loads in that state, the problem is likely associated with something in the previous user folder, such as a save or downloaded Gallery content. Restore backed-up folders one at a time, then test individual save files as directed by EA’s guide.
Do not delete the only copy of a save while testing. The goal is to identify which file or content makes the error return while preserving a working backup.

4. Keep manual save versions
EA says older autosaves cannot be recovered through its saved-game recovery steps. If you want the option to return to an earlier point in a game, keep multiple manual saves. See EA’s guide to recovering a past saved game.

If the error returns after these checks, contact EA support through its official channels with the complete code, platform, game version, and the steps that reproduce it. The Sims Team asked players who encounter the cited 109 subcodes again to share affected saves to help investigate other causes. Use EA’s official submission directions and consider carefully what personal information may be present in a save file.
There is no universal one-click fix established for Error Code 109. The EA guidance supports backing up, testing without Mods, and isolating files with a clean folder; it does not establish that clearing a cache, reinstalling the game, or removing Mods will fix every instance.
