The Stairway works in Greed Mode in The Binding of Isaac: Repentance. Its ladder can appear in the starting room, and it leads to an Angel Shop that uses the Greed Angel Room item pool. Enter the ladder before Isaac leaves that room: once you leave, the ladder disappears for that floor.
What The Stairway does in Greed Mode
The Stairway is an unlockable passive item introduced in Repentance. Its normal effect is to create a ladder in the starting room of a floor. That ladder leads to a special Angel Shop rather than to the ordinary shop room.

The same ladder behavior applies in Greed Mode. The item’s reference entry explicitly includes Greed Mode, and the Angel Shop reached through it has a mode-specific pool: Greed Angel Room. This is the key distinction for planning a run. You are not opening a standard Greed shop with a different entrance; you are accessing a separate Angel-themed shop whose contents are selected from the Greed Angel Room pool.
The answer is therefore not merely that the item remains in your inventory. The useful part of its effect—the ladder and the special shop—can function during a Greed run, provided you use the ladder at the correct time.

How to enter the shop
The timing restriction is strict but simple: the ladder exists only while Isaac is still in the floor’s starting room. Leaving that room removes it. Use this sequence whenever you want to check the shop:
- Start the floor and stay in the starting room. Look for the ladder created by The Stairway before moving through another doorway.
- Walk onto the ladder immediately. Treat the starting room as the access window; do not begin clearing Greed Mode waves or visit another room first.
- Inspect the Angel Shop. Its stock is governed by the Greed Angel Room pool, not the regular Greed shop pools.
- Leave only after deciding you are finished. Once Isaac exits the starting room, the ladder disappears, so returning later will not restore access on that floor.
If you have already left the starting room and cannot find the ladder, that is expected behavior rather than evidence that Greed Mode disabled the item.
What can be in The Stairway’s Angel Shop?
The Angel Shop reference lists several types of objects that can appear. The list describes the shop’s available pool and fixtures; it should not be read as a guarantee that every run will generate every entry.

| Shop element | How it is described | What to understand in a Greed run |
|---|---|---|
| Angel Room pool item | The shop can contain an item from the relevant Angel Room pool. | In Greed Mode, the mode-specific Angel pool is used. |
| Eternal Heart | Listed among the possible pickups. | It is a potential Angel Shop resource, not a guaranteed spawn. |
| Soul Heart | Listed among the possible pickups. | Its appearance is controlled by the shop generation rather than by the ordinary Greed shop pool. |
| Key | A key pickup is listed. | This can matter when a run’s doors or future pickups make keys valuable, but the reference does not promise a key on every visit. |
| Holy Card | A Holy Card is included in the listed contents. | It is part of the possible Angel Shop stock. |
| Angel statue | An Angel statue can appear and can be fought for a Key Piece. | The statue is an encounter opportunity, not a conventional shop pickup. |
| Beggar or Rotten Beggar | One may be positioned at the entrance. | The entrance fixture is separate from the ordinary Greed shop’s pool description. |
| Confessional | A Confessional can appear if it has been unlocked. | If your save has not unlocked it, its absence is normal. |
Items and pickups in this shop may be discounted in the same way as items in regular shops. The discount possibility does not change the pool: a discounted object is still being generated by the Angel Shop’s applicable pool, not by the standard Greed shop tables.

The Stairway shop versus the ordinary Greed shop
Greed Mode has a regular shop that is normally available on each floor, with the exception of the Ultra Greed floor. That shop is described as drawing from the Greed Shop, Greed Boss Room, and Greed Treasure Room pools.
The Stairway’s destination is different. It is an Angel Shop, and its Greed Mode behavior is tied to the Greed Angel Room pool. The two shops can therefore offer different categories of items even when they are available on the same floor.
| Feature | Regular Greed Mode shop | The Stairway’s Angel Shop |
|---|---|---|
| Access method | Use the normal shop room. | Use The Stairway’s ladder in the starting room. |
| Pool sources | Greed Shop, Greed Boss Room, and Greed Treasure Room pools. | Greed Angel Room pool in Greed Mode. |
| Timing rule | Uses the normal room’s availability. | The ladder disappears after Isaac leaves the starting room. |
| Angel-specific fixtures | Not defined by The Stairway’s Angel Shop listing. | May include an Angel statue, a Beggar or Rotten Beggar, and a Confessional when unlocked. |
This distinction explains why checking the normal shop cannot substitute for checking The Stairway. If you want the Greed Angel Room selection, you must use the ladder before leaving the starting room.

How to unlock The Stairway
The Stairway is unlocked by defeating Isaac while playing as Jacob and Esau. After that unlock is available in your save, the item can be obtained in runs and its Greed Mode behavior becomes relevant.
The item’s pool listing includes both the regular Angel Room pool and the Greed Angel Room pool. That listing is consistent with the mode-specific behavior: when the item is used in Greed Mode, its destination is governed by the Greed Angel Room selection rather than by the ordinary Greed shop tables.
Practical decisions during a Greed run
Check the starting room before spending resources
The ladder is the first thing to inspect on a new floor. Because leaving the room permanently removes it for that floor, beginning the normal Greed sequence first can cost you the opportunity. Make the Stairway check part of your opening-room routine, before buying from another shop or entering a wave room.

Separate “shop access” from “shop value”
Finding the ladder answers the access question, not the value question. The Angel Shop may offer an item, hearts, a key, a Holy Card, or another listed fixture, but the reference does not establish that any particular object will appear on every floor. Decide whether the available stock justifies your current resources after you enter; do not assume that the presence of The Stairway guarantees a specific pickup.
Account for the Angel statue
An Angel statue can be part of the room and can be fought for a Key Piece. That makes the room potentially more than a passive purchasing stop. If you choose to engage the statue, treat the encounter as a separate combat decision from buying or collecting the shop’s other contents.
Remember unlock-dependent fixtures
A Confessional is listed only if it has been unlocked. Its absence does not indicate a Greed Mode restriction. Likewise, a Beggar or Rotten Beggar at the entrance is one of the possible listed fixtures, not a guaranteed feature of every Angel Shop.

The shop can discount items and pickups as regular shops do. A discount may change whether a purchase fits your run’s economy, but it does not alter the fact that the stock comes from the Greed Angel Room pool.

Troubleshooting: why the ladder may seem not to work
The ladder was visible, but it disappeared
The most likely explanation is that Isaac left the starting room. The ladder is removed when that happens, and it does not remain available for a later return. This is the expected timing rule.
No ladder appeared at the beginning
- Confirm that The Stairway is actually active in the run rather than merely unlocked in the save.
- Check that you are looking in the floor’s starting room, where the ladder is created.
- Confirm which game version you are using. The documented behavior is for Repentance 1.7.9b, not automatically for Repentance+ or later versions.
The room did not contain the item you expected
The Stairway does not turn into the regular Greed shop. In Greed Mode, its Angel Shop uses the Greed Angel Room pool, so a result associated with Greed Shop, Greed Boss Room, or Greed Treasure Room tables should not be treated as a requirement for this room.
The Confessional is missing
The Confessional is conditional on having it unlocked. Its absence is therefore compatible with normal operation of the shop.
You are testing after leaving the room
Returning to the starting room cannot restore a ladder that disappeared when you first exited. For a clean check, restart the timing on a new floor: inspect the starting room immediately, then use the ladder before entering any other room.
Bottom line for Greed Mode players
In Repentance 1.7.9b, The Stairway does work in Greed Mode. The ladder can appear in the starting room, and it opens an Angel Shop using the Greed Angel Room pool. Use it before leaving that room, and keep it distinct from the regular Greed shop, which draws from its own Greed Shop, Greed Boss Room, and Greed Treasure Room pools.
