Nintendo announced The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as the title of a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. on September 12, 2025. The announcement is no longer a notice of an upcoming release: Nintendo’s listed 2026 theatrical dates have passed. Its official pages give different dates for different markets, so there is no single date to apply to every region.
What Nintendo announced
In a September 12, 2025 Nintendo Direct recap, Nintendo of America said Shigeru Miyamoto announced the film’s title, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, as part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th-anniversary announcements. Nintendo described it as a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. The title announcement was Nintendo’s; the reviewed announcement does not provide a direct Miyamoto quote about the movie.
Nintendo’s recap said the film would begin its worldwide release on April 3, 2026. Nintendo Philippines repeated that worldwide-start wording in a September 19, 2025 post. Those statements should be distinguished from the market-specific dates on Nintendo’s movie pages.
What the official synopsis says
Nintendo Philippines’ movie page says Mario and Luigi meet Yoshi, and that Princess Peach’s birthday party sets off a galactic adventure. The brothers seek to stop Bowser Jr.’s ambitions and save Rosalina. This is Nintendo’s official synopsis; it does not establish further plot details beyond those points.

Theatrical dates depend on the Nintendo page and market
Nintendo’s pages do not present one uniform date across all markets. The U.S. promotional page lists “Only in Theaters” and April 1, 2026; Nintendo Philippines’ movie page gives April 4, 2026. In a March 13, 2026 trailer article, Nintendo Philippines also said the film would be released on April 04 by Universal Pictures. These are official regional statements, while the earlier announcement described a worldwide release beginning April 3.

How the movie relates to the Galaxy games
The film is an animated theatrical movie based on the Super Mario Bros. world. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are interactive video games; Nintendo’s movie page links readers to the classic games, but that does not make the film a direct game adaptation or establish that its story retells either game.
Nintendo’s 2025 anniversary announcement also covered a physical Nintendo Switch edition containing both games, digital availability of each game, an illustrated hardcover Rosalina’s Storybook, and Mario & Luma / Rosalina & Lumas amiibo figures with in-game rewards. Those are companion game-related products, not evidence of a movie release or of current movie-merchandise inventory. Check Nintendo or retailers for current product availability and edition details.
