The Surge Beginner Tips: Combat, Limb Targeting, and Gear

The Surge makes its combat choices easier to read once you know what each one is for: study an enemy before committing, manage stamina so you can defend or reposition, and decide whether you need a quick opening or a particular piece of equipment. These tips explain those tradeoffs without assuming a single best build or control scheme.

How should you approach combat?

Watch an enemy’s attack pattern and keep a position that gives you room to respond. The official Deck13 game description puts the emphasis on studying enemies rather than charging in and swinging without focus. In practice, make an opening deliberate: observe a tell, choose whether to attack or defend, and avoid spending stamina on actions that leave you unable to react.

Defense is part of the same decision. Focus’s combat overview describes positioning, speed, and stamina alongside blocks, ducks, jumps, and exo-enhanced dodges. Use the defensive option that suits the situation, and treat stamina as a resource for both offense and response rather than something to empty in a long attack sequence. Exact control inputs and timing can vary by platform and are not specified here.

Should you target an armored or exposed limb?

Choose based on what you need from the encounter. An exposed, unarmored limb is the more direct route when staying alive and ending the fight quickly matter most. Targeting an armored part is riskier because armored enemies take less damage, but it can be worthwhile when you want the equipment attached to that part.

#1 Best Overall
The Surge - Xbox One
  • A brand-new hardcore RPG - Environmental storytelling and unique, augmented hero provide a fresh take on the genre
  • You are what you loot - Innovative leveling-up system allows you to harvest the technology of dismembered enemies
  • Tight, visceral combat - Hit carefully to dismember your enemies and loot the spoils
  • The future is now - Work against the devastating effects of enhanced humans and global warming caused by an ever-evolving techno-world
Target Why choose it Tradeoff
Exposed, unarmored limb Favor a faster, easier kill when survival is the priority. It is not the choice for pursuing the armor attached to a protected part.
Armored limb Target the part to pursue its equipment. The armored target takes less damage, so getting the drop can require more risk.

Deck13’s official description distinguishes the easier kill from attacking armored parts, while Focus explains that the dismembered body part determines the equipment gained in its target-and-loot overview. Make the target choice before you commit: changing it changes the purpose of the fight.

What should you do with new weapons and armor?

Try the weapons you acquire instead of assuming that one is automatically an upgrade for your playstyle. Deck13 notes that weapons and armor have different movesets and encourages mixing equipment. A weapon that feels comfortable to use may fit you better than one that looks stronger on paper; when a setup works, upgrading it is a more grounded choice than chasing an unsupported “best build.”

Rank #2
The Surge 2 - PlayStation 4
  • Hardcore, brutal melee combat
  • Face deadly foes and colossal bosses
  • Cut off parts of the enemy you want to loot
  • Rich character progression and customization

Armor and weapons are also part of your combat approach, not just a loot checklist. Experiment with combinations and notice how their movesets fit your preferred pace and positioning. The available official descriptions establish variety, not a universal ranking.

A quick decision checklist

  • Before attacking: Watch for the enemy’s pattern and identify a safe opening.
  • When choosing a target: Pick exposed limbs for a simpler kill, or an armored part if its equipment is worth the extra danger.
  • While managing stamina: Leave room to respond with a defensive action or repositioning.
  • After acquiring gear: Try its moveset and build around what suits you rather than expecting a single optimal setup.
