To beat bosses in The Surge, study their attack patterns, dodge with stamina in mind, and take brief openings instead of forcing long attack strings. Before a fight, equip healing implants; after a failed attempt, identify one mistake and change your approach. For early gear, compare armor and weapons by their actual attributes and acquisition routes rather than assuming one set or weapon is best for every build.
How to fight bosses in The Surge
The Surge is a single-player action RPG set in the CREO facility. Its targeted limb attacks let you pursue equipment by attacking specific body parts, then craft gear from loot, as described on the Steam product listing. The following combat advice comes from a boss guide published by Samurai Gamers in May 2017, not from recent version testing.

Watch before you commit
At the start of an encounter, prioritize recognizing the boss’s windups and repeated attack sequences. The 2017 guide warns that some attacks come twice in succession. If you dodge after the first strike and immediately attack, the follow-up may catch you; wait until the sequence is finished before treating it as an opening. Samurai Gamers’ general boss tips
Dodge for position, not just distance
Dodging uses stamina, so avoid spending it on unnecessary movement. Timing and direction matter: a late dodge, or one that carries you into the attack’s path, can leave you exposed. Watch the incoming move, preserve enough stamina to respond, and use a dodge that gets you clear rather than automatically rolling away from the enemy.

Take short punish windows
Do not continue an attack string when a boss begins its next windup. The 2017 guide gives the first Firebug form as a specific example: two hits to one leg briefly incapacitate it, creating time for two more hits if you react promptly. Treat that sequence as a guide-specific example, not a universal boss rule; the practical lesson is to stop once the opening ends.
Prepare healing and learn from each attempt
The same guide recommends Vital Injection V.1 or better and carrying two or three Vital Injection implants for a boss encounter. It says further implants and implant capacity become available through progression and suit upgrades. These are recommendations from the 2017 guide, so check your current equipment and available capacity rather than assuming you can equip the same number at every point in the game.
Rank #2
- Hardcore, brutal melee combat
- Face deadly foes and colossal bosses
- Cut off parts of the enemy you want to loot
- Rich character progression and customization
After a defeat, pinpoint what caused it: a missed dodge, a repeated attack you mistook for an opening, or an attack string that ran too long. Change one decision on the next attempt and see whether it improves your survival or creates a safer opening. Repeating the same sequence without accounting for what happened gives you little new information.
What armor should you get early?
There is no established universal best armor set in the sources covered here. The Samurai Gamers armor directory organizes equipment by defense, stability, Core Power consumption, and acquisition location; use those attributes to judge a set against your needs and available resources. - Defense: Compare how much protection a piece or set offers for the damage you are trying to withstand.
- Stability: Consider this alongside defense when weighing how well armor supports your preferred approach to incoming attacks.
- Core Power consumption: Check whether the equipment fits your available Core Power instead of choosing by appearance or a single stat.
- Acquisition route: Account for where the armor comes from and what materials or effort obtaining and crafting it requires.
Lynx as an early option
A Samurai Gamers guide published in May 2017 says the full Lynx set can be collected in the first area by eliminating and executing enemies, which yield schematics and crafting materials. It describes Lynx as balanced and reports Core Power figures of 12 for Lynx and 19 for Rhino. These are historical guide values, not freshly verified figures; check them against your game version before using them to plan a build. Samurai Gamers’ Lynx armor guide
How to choose a weapon
Choose a weapon for how you want to fight, then compare its relevant attributes. The 2017 weapon lists include damage, impact, attack speed, proficiency scaling, energy gain, and acquisition information, across classes such as heavy-duty and single-rigged weapons. They are dated lists rather than a current, exhaustive ranking; some acquisition entries are unknown. Samurai Gamers’ weapon list
- Damage and impact: Compare the listed values to understand the weapon’s offensive profile; neither number alone identifies the best fit.
- Attack speed: Consider how its pace suits your timing and ability to leave an opening before the enemy retaliates.
- Proficiency scaling: Check how the weapon’s scaling relates to the proficiency you have developed.
- Energy gain: Include this attribute in the comparison if energy generation matters to your approach.
- Acquisition: Confirm where and how the weapon is obtained; older list entries may not give a known route.
These attributes support a build-specific comparison, not a claim that one weapon class or item is best for every player.
