Atonement is based on a reported real incident and a meeting that happened years later, but it is a dramatization—not a scene-by-scene historical record. In April 2003, U.S. Marines fired on an Armenian-Christian family’s cars in Baghdad, killing three men. Nearly a decade later, two women from the family met former Marine Lu Lobello, one of the Marines who had fired.
Is Atonement based on a true story?
Yes. Writer-director Reed Van Dyk based the 2026 film on Dexter Filkins’s 2012 New Yorker article about the Baghdad shooting and the later meeting between Lobello and surviving family members. The film brings that reported story to the screen, but its individual scenes should not be treated as independently verified history. Reuters, September 29, 2026; Moviefone, October 1, 2026.
What happened in Baghdad?
In April 2003, as U.S. Marines fought Iraqi forces in Baghdad, three generations of an Armenian-Christian family were driving home. Marines fired on the family’s cars, killing three men. The film’s account centers on the surviving family members and one of the Marines involved, rather than presenting the event only as a battlefield incident. Reuters, September 29, 2026.
Did the survivors forgive the Marine?
Reuters reports that the family agreed to meet Lobello and forgave him. That reported outcome does not make the meeting a simple redemption story: the encounter followed profound loss, and the accounts of the film’s cast and director emphasize the difficulty of what the people involved could say or resolve. Kenneth Branagh, who plays journalist Michael Reid, described “a tremendous sort of interchange between people in impossible situations with difficult answers to find — if they can be found.” Reuters, September 29, 2026.

What is real, and what did the film change?
The film changes the names of the real participants and uses imagination to fill gaps in the reported story. Van Dyk told Moviefone that he spoke with people involved and drew on Filkins’s reporting, while also inventing material where the record did not supply what he needed for a dramatic narrative. As he put it, “So my job is speaking to the real people, getting to know them, trying to fill in gaps and then also fill in gaps with my imagination.” Moviefone, October 1, 2026.
| Real story | Film |
|---|---|
| Former Marine Lu Lobello | Lou D’Alessandro |
| Margaret Kachaturian | Mariam Khachaturian |
| The Kachaturian family | The Khachaturian family |
| Journalist Dexter Filkins | Journalist Michael Reid, played by Kenneth Branagh |
The film’s central encounter follows a meeting nearly a decade after the shooting. The changed names and acknowledged use of imagination mean that dialogue, scenes and connective details in the drama are not automatically evidence of what happened in real life. Van Dyk has said his aim was to center people affected by the incident and by war, rather than to claim every dramatic moment was documented. Reuters, September 29, 2026; Moviefone, October 1, 2026.
