The Ultimate Gamer’s Checklist: 10 Essential Tech Gadgets for Your Collection

Build a gaming setup around the upgrades you will actually use: screen, controls, audio, storage, charging, portability, creator tools and reliable power.

The best gaming setup is not the one with the most accessories; it is the one that fixes the things you notice every time you play. Start with a display and controls that suit your platform, then add audio, storage, reliable power and networking. Handhelds and creator gear belong on the list only when they solve a real need.

This US-focused checklist covers ten useful categories across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, handheld and streaming setups. Treat the named products as examples, not universal winners: compatibility, features and prices vary by model and platform.

How to decide what is essential

A gadget earns a place if it improves a recurring part of play—image quality, control, comfort, communication, access, storage, reliability or content creation. Before buying, ask whether it works with your platform, whether you will use the improvement regularly, and whether it adds ongoing costs such as replacement batteries, subscriptions or proprietary adapters.

The first six categories below address common play needs. Charging, portability, creator tools and network or power equipment are valuable in the right setup, but not mandatory for everyone. Controllers matter most to console players; keyboards and mice are core PC inputs; capture cards are for creators, not a prerequisite for gaming.

HyperX Cloud III – Wired Gaming Headset, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Angled 53mm Drivers, Spatial Audio, Memory Foam, Durable Frame, Ultra-Clear 10mm Mic, USB-C, USB-A, 3.5mm – Black/Red
  • Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
  • Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
  • Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.

1. Gaming monitor or TV

Your screen shapes image detail, motion clarity and responsiveness. Choose resolution and refresh rate together: 1080p, 1440p and 4K describe image resolution, while 60Hz, 120Hz and higher describe how often the display can refresh. A fast panel helps only when the computer or game can deliver enough frames to use it.

Match the display to your games and hardware

  • Most PC players: 1440p at 144–180Hz is a practical balance, provided your graphics hardware can drive it.
  • Competitive players: prioritize motion handling, refresh rate and measured input latency over extra resolution. Very high refresh rates are most useful when your system can produce correspondingly high frame rates.
  • Console players: check the console, game, display port and cable together if you want 4K at 120Hz or variable refresh rate (VRR). HDMI 2.1 support may be required for the desired combination; not every game runs at 120 frames per second.
  • Cinematic and single-player play: OLED or mini-LED may offer stronger contrast than a basic LCD, but evaluate brightness, HDR performance, text clarity and warranty coverage. OLED has a burn-in risk with persistent static imagery; that does not mean every panel will develop it.

Screen size should fit your viewing distance and desk. A 27-inch monitor is often easier to place on a small desk than a 32-inch panel or ultrawide. Check whether the display’s HDR brightness and dimming actually support the effect you expect rather than buying on the HDR label alone. A KVM switch or built-in KVM can also be useful if one monitor serves a gaming PC and work computer.

For scale, Sony’s US monitor store lists the 27-inch QHD OLED INZONE M10S at $799.99 and another PlayStation-branded 27-inch monitor at $349.00; these are observed listings, not permanent prices. See the PlayStation monitor store for current specifications and availability. The higher-refresh premium model is not automatically a better buy for a console-only setup.

2. Primary controller

A controller is a core console accessory and a useful alternative input for many PC games. A standard first-party pad is usually enough for casual play. Competitive players may value back buttons, remapping, adjustable trigger stops or replaceable thumbsticks; families may get more use from a second standard controller than from one premium model.

Compare exact platform support, wired and wireless modes, battery life, charging options, latency, accessibility features and warranty. Hall-effect or TMR sticks can reduce wear associated with conventional potentiometers, but they are not drift-proof: other mechanical parts, firmware and use also affect durability.

Sony’s DualSense adds haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on supported PS5 games. Its catalog also includes the higher-end DualSense Edge and the Access controller, a customizable PS5 controller kit designed for players with disabilities. Individual access needs differ, so check button layout, mounting and switch compatibility rather than assuming one controller suits everyone. See PlayStation’s accessories catalog. Several DualSense color variants were listed at $74–$79 on Sony’s US store; price varies by edition and color. Check the PlayStation color collection for current listings.

Logitech G432 Wired Gaming Headset - Black
  • Enjoy expansive cinematic sound. Big 50 mm audio drivers deliver an incredible sound experience
  • Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
  • Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
  • Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
  • Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.

3. Gaming headset or earbuds

A headset can make team chat clearer, support quieter play and help distinguish sounds in games. For competitive play, prioritize clear positional imaging and intelligible microphone output over exaggerated bass. For long sessions, weight, clamp force, breathable ear pads and comfort with glasses are more important than a feature list.

  • Most flexible: a multiplatform headset with a 2.4GHz USB receiver and wired fallback. Confirm that the specific version supports each console you own; similar-looking PC, PlayStation and Xbox editions may differ.
  • For PS5: PlayStation Link models such as the PULSE Elite or PULSE Explore are platform-oriented options. Sony says the PULSE Elite can connect to PS5 and compatible Windows PCs or Macs with its included USB adapter. Check PlayStation accessory support for connection details.
  • For Xbox: verify Xbox Wireless compatibility on the exact model; a generic Bluetooth or USB headset may not work as expected.
  • For portability: earbuds take less space, but fit, microphone pickup and battery serviceability are personal trade-offs.

Bluetooth can introduce latency or microphone-quality compromises in gaming. Proprietary 2.4GHz wireless and platform-specific systems behave differently, so confirm how a headset connects before buying. Also check whether EQ, spatial audio, mic monitoring or other features require software or a subscription. Replaceable ear pads and a serviceable battery can matter over years of use. If you play single-player games through speakers and rarely chat, a premium headset may add little.

4. Gaming keyboard

For PC gaming, choose a keyboard by layout, switch feel, noise and reliability—not RGB. Mechanical boards offer distinct switch choices: linear switches move smoothly, tactile switches provide a bump, and clicky switches add audible feedback. Hot-swappable models let you change compatible switches without soldering; magnetic or analog models add adjustable actuation, which is useful in some games but not a universal advantage.

  • General gaming and work: a 75% or tenkeyless layout keeps function or navigation keys while freeing desk space.
  • MMOs, simulation and number-pad-heavy work: a full-size board preserves the number pad and may offer more dedicated controls.
  • Compact setups: 65% and 60% boards save space, but check which arrow, function and navigation keys are missing or require key combinations.
  • Shared rooms: consider quieter switches; clicky keys can disturb others.

For wireless boards, compare battery life, latency, device switching and whether macros or profiles can be saved onboard rather than relying on desktop software. Console keyboard support depends on both the console and the specific game, so confirm that before treating a keyboard as a console upgrade.

5. Gaming mouse

Shape and fit matter more than headline weight. Choose for your hand size and grip—palm, claw, fingertip or a combination—then check sensor consistency, button placement, weight, battery and charging method. Small-handed players should compare dimensions, not just grams.

  • FPS: a comfortable, lighter mouse with a reliable sensor and only the buttons you need is a sound starting point.
  • MMO or productivity crossover: additional side buttons and palm support may be worth the extra weight.
  • Wireless: plan for receiver placement, charging and eventual battery degradation. A wireless receiver placed close to the mouse can help avoid connection problems.
  • Budget: a well-designed wired mouse can be better value than a poorly fitting premium wireless one.

Do not pay extra for a high polling rate expecting a proportional performance jump. Any benefit depends on the display, game, computer and whether you can perceive or use the difference. A GamesRadar hardware roundup listed the 61-gram Logitech G Pro X2 Superstrike at $179.99, an example of the premium end rather than a required spend. See its hardware digest for that listing.

6. Game storage

Storage can relieve capacity pressure and, when the device supports it, shorten loading. The right choice depends on whether you need internal expansion, portable storage, or space for recordings and backups.

  • Console: check the manufacturer’s approved internal expansion requirements before buying an SSD. External drives may store games that must be moved to internal storage before play; confirm which games can run directly from the drive on your console.
  • PC: weigh capacity, endurance, controller quality, warranty and cooling. A fast SSD without adequate heat management may throttle.
  • Laptop: a portable SSD can add capacity without opening the device, but check cable and port compatibility.
  • Streamer or collector: separate recording storage from game storage where practical, and back up saves, captures and configuration files. An SSD is not a backup.

Sony’s accessories catalog lists officially licensed WD BLACK SN850P internal drives up to 8TB and Seagate external SSD options up to 2TB for PS5 and PS4 storage; confirm the current model’s compatibility and use limits on the PlayStation storage accessories page. Sony’s US store listed an 8TB WD BLACK drive at $1,099.99 and a 2TB SanDisk Extreme portable SSD at $239.99 when its deals page was observed; those are volatile listings, not enduring prices. Check PlayStation deals.

7. Charging and cable management

A charging dock or rechargeable battery system is a practical convenience when controllers regularly run low. Check how many controllers it charges, whether it uses replaceable batteries or a proprietary pack, whether the dock fits your controller revision and protective shell, and whether it blocks ports or other accessories. A holder that does not make a reliable charging connection is not a charging solution.

For USB-C charging, use a reputable charger and a cable suited to the device. Avoid docks with questionable contact pins and batteries that cannot be replaced if serviceability matters to you. Keep lithium-ion devices away from excessive heat. Cable clips, ties and a sensible route from desk to power can reduce clutter without requiring a branded gaming product.

This category is especially useful for households with several controllers or frequent couch play. A wired PC setup with one controller may not need a dock. Sony’s US store listed a PowerA PlayStation Portal accessory bundle at $69.99 and a PowerA Essentials PS5 Charge & Connect Pack at $64.99 on its deals page; check the contents and controller fit rather than assuming the bundle is the right solution.

8. Portable gaming device or remote-play handheld

“Handheld” covers three different experiences: a native handheld runs games locally; a remote-play device streams from a console or PC; and a cloud-gaming device relies primarily on an internet service. Decide which you need before comparing screens.

Type Example Best fit Main dependency
Native handheld Steam Deck OLED Local play from a supported Steam library, including travel without dependable internet Device performance, game compatibility and battery life
Remote-play device PlayStation Portal Playing supported PS5 games on a second screen Wi-Fi, the host PS5 for remote play and compatible games
Cloud gaming Service-dependent device or mode Playing from a supported cloud library Service availability, subscription where required, network quality and game support

Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED with a 1280×800 HDR OLED display, a 6 nm APU and Wi-Fi 6E on its official product page. Its verification page provides information about game compatibility. It is a native gaming handheld, not a promise that every PC game will run equally well.

Sony describes PlayStation Portal as a remote-play device with a 1080p display and gameplay up to 60fps; its documentation also describes cloud streaming for supported games. Remote play requires Wi-Fi, and games requiring VR or additional peripherals are not compatible. Cloud streaming requires PlayStation Plus Premium, and availability varies by country or region. Check the PlayStation Portal page and accessory support for current requirements. Neither mode makes Portal a standalone replacement for a console. For either streaming approach, local Wi-Fi conditions and latency matter; a fast download-speed claim alone does not guarantee responsive play.

9. Streaming and recording equipment

Creator equipment belongs on the checklist only if you record, stream or frequently control a production workflow. A PC streamer may be able to capture gameplay in software; console creators routing video through a computer may need a capture card. A microphone and good lighting can improve a face-camera stream more than a webcam upgrade alone.

  • Console capture: verify capture resolution separately from passthrough resolution, and check HDR, VRR and refresh-rate support end to end. HDCP-protected video generally cannot be captured.
  • Desktop creators: the Elgato 4K Pro is a PCIe card positioned for HDMI 2.1 capture and passthrough, so it is aimed at desktop PCs rather than laptops. Elgato lists systems including PS5 Pro, PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, ROG Ally and iPhone among its compatible devices; check the exact workflow and requirements on its 4K Pro page.
  • Control workflow: a Stream Deck or similar macro pad can trigger scene changes, mute controls, sound effects, moderation actions and shortcuts. It is a convenience, not a performance upgrade; start with the tasks you actually repeat. See the Stream Deck range.
  • No creator workflow: skip the capture card and macro pad. A webcam without adequate lighting and audio will not by itself make a stream look or sound polished.

10. Network and power protection

For online gaming, stable local networking is often a more sensible first fix than a gaming-branded router. Test Ethernet if you can run a cable; it avoids Wi-Fi congestion and is usually the simplest way to stabilize a connection. If you must use Wi-Fi, improve router placement and consider the right band for your home. Mesh Wi-Fi can help with coverage in a large or difficult layout, but adds equipment and setup complexity.

Remote play and cloud gaming depend on low local latency and a stable connection between devices, as well as internet performance where the service or host is off-site. Upload quality matters when sending video outward. Quality-of-service settings may help manage traffic inside a home network, but no router can promise lower ping to a distant game server: routing and server distance are outside its control.

A reputable surge protector is a sensible protection for electronics. Desktop PC owners may consider an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to provide time for a controlled shutdown during a short outage; it is not a substitute for backup storage or a guarantee against every power problem. Use power equipment rated for the load, and do not overload a power strip. For most setups, reliable protection and tidy cabling are better value than paying extra for a “gaming” power strip.

Build the checklist around your kind of gaming

Player Prioritize Usually optional
Budget PC player Comfortable 1440p or 1080p display matched to the PC, dependable mouse and keyboard, storage as needed Capture card, premium wireless gear and extreme-refresh display
Competitive FPS player Responsive display the PC can drive, well-fitting mouse, comfortable headset and stable network High polling-rate upgrades without a demonstrated need, RGB-focused accessories
Living-room console player Display matched to console features, controller, headset if chatting, charging if multiple controllers are used Keyboard and mouse unless supported games need them
Multi-platform enthusiast Check compatibility before buying shared audio, input and storage; favor genuine cross-platform support Assuming one wireless receiver or software feature works everywhere
Handheld traveler Native handheld if internet is unreliable; portable storage and suitable charging accessories if needed Remote-play device if the trip lacks dependable Wi-Fi
Streamer or creator Clear microphone, lighting, sufficient recording storage and a capture card only where the workflow requires one Macro pad before establishing repeatable controls
Accessibility-focused player Evaluate control layout, mounting, switches and remapping against individual needs Assuming a standard or premium controller will suit every player

What to buy first—and what can wait

  1. Identify the weakest part of the setup you use every session: display, input, audio, comfort, storage or connection.
  2. Fix recurring discomfort and communication problems before paying for small specification gains.
  3. Add storage when capacity is genuinely limiting you, and preserve a separate backup for important saves and captures.
  4. Improve network reliability and power protection where your setup needs them.
  5. Buy a handheld, capture card, camera, control deck or accessibility accessory to meet a specific use case—not to complete a collection.
  6. Leave premium and collectible upgrades until the practical gaps are covered. Lighting, themed editions and display stands can be enjoyable, but they do not substitute for reliable controls, storage or comfort.

Prices and availability in the cited US stores can change, and compatibility can vary by edition, firmware, operating system, console generation and connection method. Check the exact product listing and platform support before buying; a device may pass audio or input while losing advanced features on another platform.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
