1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most AM4 Mini-ITX builds, the Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX is the best all-round choice: it balances Ryzen 5000 support, dual M.2 storage, 2.5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and CPU-less BIOS updating. The ASUS ROG Strix B550-I Gaming is a strong premium alternative. Choose X570 only when its extra chipset-connected PCIe lanes solve a real storage or expansion need; it does not make a gaming CPU or GPU faster by itself.
AM4 Mini-ITX still makes sense when you already own a compatible Ryzen processor and DDR4 memory. In 2026, many boards are remaining stock or used, so exact revision, BIOS, condition, warranty, and price can matter more than old launch rankings.

What Mini-ITX changes
Mini-ITX boards are typically about 17 × 17 cm. Their compact footprint saves case space, but usually means two DIMM slots, one full-length PCIe slot, few fan headers, and limited room around the CPU socket and heatsinks. Cable routing, cooler installation, storage access, and airflow therefore deserve as much attention as the chipset name.

B550 or X570?
Choose B550 for the usual gaming build
B550 is generally the practical choice for one graphics card and one or two SSDs. With a compatible Ryzen CPU, it can provide PCIe 4.0 for the graphics slot and a CPU-connected M.2 slot. Its chipset typically creates less heat than X570, and many B550 ITX boards are better equipped for modern wired networking.
Choose X570 when its extra connectivity matters
X570 offers more PCIe 4.0 connectivity through the chipset, which can help when a system needs several high-speed devices. Mini-ITX has only one expansion slot, however, so the practical benefit often comes down to storage and onboard connections. Many X570 ITX boards also use an active chipset fan. The ASUS X570-I, for example, pairs two M.2 positions and Wi-Fi 6 with active miniature cooling, but specifies Intel Gigabit Ethernet rather than 2.5Gb Ethernet. See its specifications.
Neither chipset inherently improves CPU or GPU performance. For gaming, a stable CPU, memory kit, graphics card, and cooling setup matter more than paying extra for X570.

Match the board to the workload
Gaming
For a single-GPU gaming system, start with B550. Prioritize verified Ryzen 5000 support, a PCIe 4.0-compatible graphics slot, stable memory support, the network connection you will actually use, and a case that fits the GPU and cooler. If using a vertical GPU, ensure the riser supports PCIe 4.0 or be ready to select PCIe Gen 3 in BIOS if the riser will not initialize at Gen 4.

Rendering, compiling, encoding, or virtualization
For long all-core workloads, prioritize VRM heatsink design, airflow over the socket, CPU power controls, M.2 cooling, and the ability to keep temperatures under control. An ITX board’s stated CPU support does not guarantee unrestricted sustained operation in every enclosure. Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X builds may need conservative power limits or PBO settings in a small case; check VRM temperatures under the workload you actually run. A well-cooled B550 model can be a better fit than X570 if one GPU and a modest number of drives meet the need.
Storage-heavy systems
Count the M.2 slots, but also identify each slot’s CPU or chipset connection, PCIe generation, SATA-M.2 support, lane sharing, cooling, and physical accessibility after installation. On some ITX boards a second M.2 position is on the underside, where case-tray clearance and drive temperatures matter. Two M.2 sockets do not imply two PCIe 4.0 drives.

Compatibility checks before buying
CPU, BIOS, and integrated graphics
Use the manufacturer’s CPU-support list for the exact model and board revision. Check the minimum BIOS for the exact CPU and whether the system needs an older supported processor to update. A processor with a G suffix has integrated graphics; most other Ryzen desktop CPUs need a discrete graphics card for display output. Do not infer CPU support from a retailer listing.
Memory capacity and stability
Most ITX boards have two DIMM slots, so select the capacity and kit configuration carefully. Maximum supported capacity and speed depend on board, BIOS, processor, DIMM density, and memory profile. ASUS lists two DIMM slots and up to 64GB for the cited X570-I specification, with memory speeds varying by CPU and overclocking profile. Check the current board specification. Consult the motherboard QVL for a high-capacity or unusual-density kit; ECC capability, where present, is not the same as full registered-ECC workstation support.
If memory training fails or the system crashes at its advertised profile, return to JEDEC defaults, update BIOS, test one DIMM at a time, and consult the QVL. Lowering memory frequency or relaxing timings may resolve instability. Use MemTest86 or an equivalent diagnostic before trusting a system with important work.
Networking and USB
2.5Gb Ethernet helps only when the rest of the wired network—such as a switch or NAS—supports it; it does not by itself improve internet gaming latency. Wi-Fi performance also depends on antennas, router, placement, and interference. Check operating-system driver support and the controller on the exact board revision.

Case, cooler, GPU, and airflow
- Confirm the case accepts standard Mini-ITX and check clearance around the socket, VRM heatsinks, rear I/O, and M.2 covers.
- Check CPU cooler height, mounting hardware, RAM clearance, and any special cooler-mount requirements.
- Confirm the GPU’s size and power-cable clearance, and verify PCIe riser generation in vertical-GPU cases.
- Plan airflow over the CPU socket and chipset, not just the GPU. A restricted sandwich layout behaves differently from a well-ventilated enclosure.
- Check fan-header count and locations; ITX boards offer less flexibility for multiple fans than larger boards.
BIOS updating and first-boot problems
BIOS Flashback is valuable when a board has old stock firmware or arrives with an unknown BIOS and no older CPU is available. Gigabyte advertises Q-Flash Plus on the B550I AORUS PRO AX, allowing an update without a CPU, memory, or graphics card installed. Gigabyte Q-Flash Plus details. Other boards may require a working CPU for an in-BIOS update.
Do not use one universal flashing sequence: the required USB port, FAT32 formatting, file name, power state, and LED behavior vary by model and BIOS revision. Follow the exact manufacturer manual and CPU-support page. If the board lacks CPU-less updating, a retailer or manufacturer may be able to update it, or a supported older AM4 CPU may be needed.
If an assembled system has no display or repeatedly restarts, check CPU support and BIOS version first, then memory seating and GPU power. For a PCIe 4.0 system using an older riser, try a direct GPU connection or set the slot to Gen 3 in BIOS if you can reach setup.
Used and remaining-stock buying checklist
Because AM4 ITX boards are mature products, inspect condition and seller terms rather than treating an old MSRP as a useful price target.
- Confirm exact model and revision, CPU support, BIOS state, and whether a BIOS update can be performed without a supported CPU.
- For used AM4 boards, inspect socket pins for bends or damage and ask for clear photographs.
- Check that Wi-Fi antennas, M.2 screws, thermal pads, I/O shield, and other included parts are present.
- Inspect the chipset fan on X570 models for damage, abnormal noise, or signs of failure.
- Ask about warranty transferability, seller identity, return window, and whether the listing is new, refurbished, or used.
- Compare the board’s total cost with an AM5 CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory combination before paying a scarcity premium.
When AM4 is still the right choice
Stay with AM4 if you already own a suitable Ryzen 3000 or 5000 processor and DDR4, and a fairly priced board delivers the performance and connections you need. It is particularly sensible for a targeted CPU upgrade or a compact gaming system where replacing the whole platform would add cost without solving a real requirement.
Compare AM5 if you need a new CPU, board, and memory anyway, want a longer CPU-upgrade path, or find a scarce AM4 ITX board priced close to a newer platform. Compare total build cost—not motherboard price alone—and account for DDR5 and the CPU you intend to use.
