A March 2027 target was reportedly delayed, and Epic is said to be shifting the project to an AI-first production workflow. There is no confirmed title, platform list, replacement date or finished build to assess.
That uncertainty makes the project important beyond one release. Disney is using its Epic relationship to pursue a persistent entertainment universe spanning games, stories and creator expression. The shooter will test whether that strategy can deliver a high-quality, durable player community while addressing the creative, labor, legal and trust problems raised by generated code and art.

What Disney game is Epic reportedly making?
Tom’s Hardware, citing Bloomberg in an October 13, 2026 report, described an unnamed Epic Games shooter using Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars properties. Neither Disney nor Epic has publicly supplied the game’s official name, platforms, final design or current release date.
The project should therefore be treated as a reported work in progress, not a formally announced product with a confirmed feature set. “Shooter” is the only publicly reported genre description; details such as player count, camera perspective, monetization, campaign structure and whether the two franchises share one setting remain undisclosed.

Is the Marvel and Star Wars game delayed?
According to the same report, the game was previously expected in March 2027 but has been delayed to an unspecified date. No new month or year has been announced.
The delay establishes schedule movement, but not its cause. The report connects the timing with Epic’s wider production changes, yet neither company has publicly confirmed that an AI transition alone caused the postponement. Any precise explanation would go beyond what is known.

Why is Epic reportedly using AI to make it?
Epic founder Tim Sweeney said the company had “a huge pivot underway,” moving developers to “retool for maximum AI acceleration.” He said the aim was not to do the same work with fewer people, but to let teams build “MORE and BETTER stuff” and extend the benefits to projects using Unreal.

They also do not establish that every line of code or every asset will be generated without human review.

AI-first development versus conventional human-led development
The project has not shipped, so the comparison below describes the trade-offs Epic and Disney will have to prove in practice rather than measured results.
| Question | AI-first model | Conventional human-led model | What must be demonstrated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Production speed | Could accelerate prototypes, asset variations and routine implementation. | Slower to scale some repetitive tasks, but established tools and review practices are predictable. | Whether faster generation survives debugging, integration and certification without creating rework. |
| Quality control | Requires strong automated tests, human review and safeguards against inconsistent output. | Responsibility and review paths are generally clearer, though human error still occurs. | Stable performance, readable systems, accessibility and polish across the entire game. |
| Originality | Can explore many variations quickly, but may produce derivative or internally inconsistent material. | Creative direction is slower to iterate but easier to attribute to specific designers and artists. | A coherent visual language and gameplay identity worthy of both licensed universes. |
| Labor and authorship | Changes what programmers and artists do and raises questions about credit, consent and displaced work. | Human contributions and ownership chains are more familiar to studios and audiences. | Transparent credits, fair working practices and clear responsibility for final decisions. |
| Legal and ethical exposure | Training data, likeness, copyright, provenance and accidental unsafe output can create additional risk. | Still faces licensing and employment issues, but the generative-data questions are narrower. | Documented rights, review procedures and remedies for infringing or harmful material. |
| Schedule reliability | Automation may shorten some tasks while introducing unfamiliar failure modes and tool dependence. | Production estimates rely on known pipelines, although delays remain common. | Whether the revised schedule is credible and whether the pipeline remains stable late in development. |
| Long-term player trust | Players may accept AI assistance if the result is excellent and responsibly made, or reject it if it feels careless or opaque. | Traditional authorship offers a simpler trust story but does not guarantee a good game. | Honest disclosure, consistent updates, post-launch support and a community that lasts. |
Why this matters to Disney’s broader games strategy
Disney’s August 13, 2026 strategy article estimated that consumers spent $3.5 billion annually on Disney games and related game products for the previous four years, then said spending exceeded $4 billion in the latest fiscal year. Disney presents games as an entry point into its stories rather than a side business.

- Assemble Titan Hero Iron Man
The company also describes its Epic relationship as a way to build a persistent entertainment universe combining gaming, storytelling and creator expression. Disney executive Sean Shoptaw called the partnership “a really important one” and said games have become a foundational part of the wider entertainment landscape.
That makes the shooter a strategic test. A weak standalone release could reduce confidence in the connected-universe plan, while a successful one could give Disney a durable place in players’ daily social and creative routines. The financial figures describe Disney’s overall games opportunity; they are not a forecast for this particular title.

Is it part of Fortnite?
Disney and Epic have discussed a connected universe, and Disney’s August 16 D23 announcement highlighted a Fortnite Smugglers Gambit activation alongside other games. However, no public announcement confirms that the unnamed Marvel and Star Wars shooter is a Fortnite mode, an expansion, or a separate product that shares Fortnite technology.
Until Disney or Epic identifies the project and explains its relationship to Fortnite, players should not assume shared progression, a common map, cross-play arrangements or a single launch ecosystem.
Where it fits among Disney’s announced games
The shooter is one part of a wider slate, not the only evidence of Disney’s gaming ambitions.
- Kingdom Hearts IV: Disney’s D23 materials describe a late-2027 launch. The Kingdom Hearts franchise has sold more than 39 million units worldwide, a historical figure for the series rather than a prediction for the new game.
- Marvel’s Wolverine: It was listed among the current slate, but the cited announcement did not provide the shooter’s missing details.
- Frontier’s Disney project: On September 3, 2026, Frontier Developments announced a fully funded Disney game built around its creative-management-simulation expertise. Its title and release date were not disclosed. Frontier chief executive Jo Cooke said the mission was to connect a passionate creative community with an iconic brand.
Frontier’s simulation is a separate project from Epic’s reported shooter. It should not be used as evidence about the shooter’s genre, technology or schedule.
What players should watch before judging the gamble
- Identity and scope: Look for an official title, platforms, gameplay reveal and an explanation of how Marvel and Star Wars coexist.
- Evidence of quality: Trailers should be judged for actual gameplay, performance, accessibility, art consistency and whether the design feels authored rather than merely generated.
- Schedule credibility: A replacement date matters less than sustained demonstrations, testing milestones and an honest explanation of what changed.
- AI accountability: Disney and Epic should explain where generative tools are used, how humans approve output, how training and asset rights are handled, and how contributors are credited.
- Community durability: The meaningful test is whether players receive reliable servers, sensible moderation, post-launch content and reasons to return after the novelty fades.
The bottom line
Epic’s unnamed Marvel and Star Wars shooter is a genuine high-stakes experiment, but not yet a proven AI success or failure. The reported delay, unknown release date and unverified production claims make caution appropriate. Its real verdict will come from the finished game: whether AI-assisted production produces distinctive, safe and polished work on schedule, and whether Disney’s larger connected-universe ambition earns lasting player trust.
