The best-supported answer to “what was FromSoftware thinking?” is that the behavior was reported as a bug—not a confirmed design choice. Bandai Namco’s patch notes later addressed a general visual-and-hitbox issue but did not name this wall or explain its cause.
Where was the wall, and how many hits did it take?
The wall was in Volcano Manor. GameSpot reported that players had found illusory walls requiring around 50 hits, and said its own test of the manor wall took 45 swings. “50 hits” is therefore a shorthand, not a guaranteed count for every weapon, player, or game version. The wall concealed an additional entrance to a room that was otherwise easy to reach, according to GameSpot’s April 19, 2022 report.

Was it an intentional secret?
The available evidence does not establish that FromSoftware deliberately designed a wall to require dozens of attacks. GameSpot characterized the behavior as a bug. No statement from a FromSoftware developer explaining the wall’s intent appears in the sources cited here, so a more specific account of what the developers meant would be speculation.
What did the 1.04 update change?
On April 19, 2022, Bandai Namco published version 1.04 patch notes for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The notes list a general fix for “some places on the map” with incorrect visuals and hitboxes, but do not mention the Volcano Manor wall by name. GameSpot reported that after the update the wall appeared indestructible. The notes establish that a general visual-and-hitbox bug was fixed; they do not confirm that this particular wall was the target or explain why it had taken so many hits.

A technical explanation appeared in Den of Geek’s June 19, 2024 coverage, which relayed analysis by creator Zullie the Witch: illusory walls have 9,999 HP, but a player character’s attack hitbox can trigger a self-deletion event, even without dealing damage. That account offers a possible explanation for why ordinary illusory walls disappear after an attack while this wall reportedly took repeated swings. It is secondary reporting of technical analysis, not an official explanation from FromSoftware, and it does not establish the developers’ specific intent for this wall.
