The Wandering Village received generally favorable—but not unanimous—reviews from PC critics. Metacritic’s snapshot retrieved October 8, 2026, lists a 75/100 PC Metascore from 11 reviews: eight positive, three mixed, and none negative. Critics often admire its unusual settlement-on-a-creature premise, art, and atmosphere; reservations tend to involve pacing, depth, and the story or campaign.
What do critics think of The Wandering Village?
Metacritic’s PC page showed a 75/100 score based on 11 critic reviews when retrieved on October 8, 2026. The indexed reviews were classified as eight positive (73%), three mixed (27%), and zero negative. The visible review dates ran from July 25 to September 4, 2025, so this is a snapshot of that aggregator’s indexed PC reviews, not a permanent or universal verdict.
The PS5 sample is separate and much smaller: Metacritic displayed three critic scores—80, 79, and 80—for reviews dated July 18, 22, and 25, 2025. Those scores should not be combined with the PC Metascore.
What reviewers praise—and what they question
Original premise, art, and atmosphere
The game’s defining idea is that the settlement is built on Onbu, a giant living creature that wanders through a post-apocalyptic world. The creature is part of the management relationship, not just the setting: the village’s survival and Onbu’s behavior are intertwined. Critics frequently highlight the originality of that premise, along with the visual style, atmosphere, and music. Metacritic’s displayed review excerpts describe the visuals and soundtrack favorably.

- A dragon threatens to burn all the villages in the Kingdom! Can you bribe him with treasures from the battlefield, while cursing your opponents treasures to make sure your village is spared?
- Fantasy-Filled Fun: This enchanting game for 2 to 5 players features fantastic treasures and the dragon from the world of Castle Panic.
- Play treasure cards to make or increase the value of a bribe. Or buy cards at the Black Market to curse a treasure.
- Bribe the Best or Burn: When the deck of treasures runs out, you'll score points for your bribes and lose points for unplayable cards still in your hand. Only the player with the highest score has their village spared from the dragon!
- With easy-to-learn rules, Please Don't Burn My Village! can be played in about 20 minutes. This makes it accessible to players ages 10+ with different experience levels, while still providing strategic depth.
A satisfying loop, with questions about depth and pace
Critics also describe an engaging city-building loop, but not everyone finds its systems or rhythm equally compelling. GameStar characterizes the experience as slow-paced but challenging. Some reviewers found the city-builder rhythm flat or wanted more development from its mechanics; others were less satisfied with the story or campaign. These are review judgments rather than objective measures of the game’s quality.
Replayability and value are individual considerations
DualShockers points to the symbiotic relationship with Onbu and replayability through Challenge and Sandbox modes, while also judging the game somewhat overpriced for what it offers. That value assessment is one publication’s opinion, not a universal price verdict; storefront prices and availability vary by region and can change.

What kind of game is The Wandering Village?
Stray Fawn Studio describes it as a city-building simulation set in a world affected by poisonous plants. You lead survivors sheltering on Onbu, expand their settlement, grow crops, research buildings and technologies, and send expeditions to forage. As Onbu travels through different biomes, you adapt to changing conditions and events, including hazards such as poisonous spores, weather, and parasites. Production chains and limited building space on the creature’s back make settlement planning part of the challenge.
It combines settlement management with survival pressures and a relationship with the creature carrying the village. The developer’s listed features include a story mode with quests and an end goal, hostility modifiers for additional challenges, controller support, Steam Deck support, and a visual approach that combines 3D environments with hand-drawn, hand-animated 2D elements.

Are Steam player reviews consistent with critics?
Steam showed 4,031 English-language user reviews with 92% positive, alongside 80 recent reviews that were also 92% positive, in a snapshot retrieved October 8, 2026. These are changing user-review figures, not critic scores; they describe a different group of reviewers and should not be added to or treated as part of Metacritic’s PC sample.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is The Wandering Village worth playing?
The reviews point to a good fit for players drawn to distinctive city-builder settings, atmospheric presentation, and the unusual task of managing a settlement on a living creature. The main caveats are that some critics wanted a deeper or less slow-paced management loop and found the story or campaign less successful. The overall PC reception is favorable, but the mixed reviews and differing priorities make the premise and those trade-offs more useful to consider than the aggregate score alone.
