The Witcher 3 Armor Sets Compared: Stats, Bonuses, Tiers, and Where to Find Them

There is no single best Witcher armor set in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The right choice depends on whether your build prioritizes weapon damage, Signs, survivability, or a middle ground, and on the exact piece and upgrade tier. Feline gear favors offensive play, Griffin gear supports Sign-focused characters, Ursine gear emphasizes defense, and Wolven gear aims for balance. Blood and Wine adds the Grandmaster tier, where wearing matching pieces unlocks set bonuses that ordinary versions do not have.

What Witcher armor sets are designed to do

Witcher school equipment is a progression system rather than a single collection of interchangeable costumes. Each school points toward a different combat plan, while the individual chest, gloves, trousers, and boots determine the actual armor rating, resistances, bonuses, level requirement, and weight shown in your game.

That distinction matters when someone asks which set is “best.” A light, attack-oriented chest may suit a fast-attack build but be a poor fit for a player who relies on absorbing punishment. A Sign-oriented school may be valuable even when its raw armor number is lower than a heavy alternative. Compare the complete item card and your skill setup instead of ranking sets by armor rating alone.

Witcher gear tiers and what changes at Grandmaster

Basic through Mastercrafted

The standard Witcher gear path has four upgrade stages: Basic, Enhanced, Superior, and Mastercrafted. A diagram identifies the version you can make; the upgraded diagram is a separate objective from the original set piece. As a result, finding one chest diagram does not automatically give you every stronger version of that chest.

Tier changes can alter the required character level, armor value, resistances, and listed bonuses. Two items from the same school can therefore serve different purposes if they come from different tiers. Read the level requirement and every bonus line before replacing a currently equipped piece.

Grandmaster gear in Blood and Wine

Blood and Wine adds Grandmaster Witcher gear. This tier requires that expansion and follows its own diagram and crafting route. Grandmaster equipment also introduces bonuses for wearing matching pieces from the same school. Those bonuses belong to the Grandmaster system; do not assume that Basic, Enhanced, Superior, or Mastercrafted versions provide the same matching-piece effects.

When comparing a Grandmaster item with a non-Grandmaster item, separate two questions: how the individual piece performs on its own, and whether completing the matching set activates a bonus that changes your build. A higher armor value by itself does not answer both questions.

Witcher armor sets compared

The table is a build-planning guide, not an item database. Exact armor, resistance, attack, and Sign values change by piece and tier. Where the available references do not establish a numeric value, inspect the diagram and the finished item in your edition of the game.

School/set Weight profile Build fit Characteristic focus Tier and level Blood and Wine required? Acquisition route
Feline (Cat) Light armor profile Attack-oriented, agile weapon builds Offensive bonuses; exact defenses and benefits depend on the piece and tier Basic, Enhanced, Superior, Mastercrafted; level varies by diagram No for the standard progression School diagrams obtained through scavenger-hunt clues, then crafted
Griffin Check the armor category on each item Sign-centered builds Sign-oriented bonuses; Grandmaster matching-piece effects are separate Basic through Mastercrafted; Grandmaster variant in the expansion Only for Grandmaster gear Follow the relevant diagram hunt and use an appropriate crafter
Ursine (Bear) Heavy armor profile Defensive, damage-absorbing builds Durability and defense, traded against the offensive priorities of lighter builds Basic through Mastercrafted; level varies by piece Only for Grandmaster gear Scavenger-hunt diagrams followed by crafting
Wolven (Wolf) Check the armor category on each item Balanced, all-round builds A middle-ground profile rather than a single extreme; exact lines vary by item Basic through Mastercrafted; Grandmaster variant in the expansion Only for Grandmaster gear Locate the school diagrams, then craft each component
Manticore Exact profile not established in the available references Blood and Wine set for players pursuing its expansion path Individual stats and bonus wording should be checked in-game before committing to a build Expansion-specific path; verify the level on each diagram Yes Use the Manticore scavenger-hunt route and craft the diagrams with a qualified armorer

Feline (Cat): the light, attack-focused option

Feline armor is the natural starting point for a player who wants offense and a lighter equipment profile. It is best evaluated alongside fast attacks, critical-hit choices, weapon upgrades, and a willingness to trade some defensive emphasis for damage pressure. Calling it universally superior would be misleading: the actual resistances and bonuses depend on the exact Feline item and its tier.

Verified example: Enhanced Feline chest armor

One reference listing for Enhanced Feline chest armor gives these bonuses: +10% attack power, +6% resistance to piercing damage, +8% resistance to slashing damage, +8% resistance to monster damage, +30% resistance to elemental damage, and +10% stamina regeneration. Treat these figures as the listed values for that specific Enhanced chest reference, not as a promise for every Feline piece or every game version. Confirm the item card in your own edition before planning around them.

The example illustrates why a set label is not enough. The same school can combine offensive statistics with several resistance lines, and an upgraded chest can differ substantially from gloves or boots. Compare all four armor slots rather than judging the set from its name.

Griffin: equipment for Sign-centered builds

Griffin gear is aimed at players who build around Signs. If your skill investment, stamina management, and combat rhythm revolve around casting, Griffin is the school to examine first. Its appeal is not simply a larger armor number; it is how its Sign-oriented bonuses interact with the rest of your ability layout.

Keep baseline Griffin statistics separate from Grandmaster effects. A regular Griffin item should be assessed from the bonuses printed on that individual piece. Grandmaster Griffin can add matching-school-piece bonuses when the required pieces are worn together, but the expansion requirement and the number of matching pieces must be checked on the Grandmaster item and its set description.

Because exact values vary across tiers, compare a Griffin diagram at the tier you can actually craft. A lower-tier piece that you can equip immediately may be more useful than a theoretically stronger diagram whose level requirement is several character levels away.

Ursine (Bear): heavy, defense-oriented equipment

Ursine armor emphasizes a heavier defensive profile. It suits players who prefer staying in danger longer, absorbing more punishment, or building a deliberate combat style rather than relying on constant repositioning. The trade-off is opportunity cost: choosing a defense-first piece can mean giving up offensive or Sign-oriented bonuses that another school would provide.

Use the full item card when deciding whether Ursine is right for you. Check armor category, resistances, level requirement, and any attack or stamina lines, then compare them with the skills and weapons you actually use. A heavy set can be the correct answer for a defensive build without being the correct answer for every encounter or character setup.

Wolven (Wolf): a balanced all-rounder

Wolven gear is commonly presented as the balanced school: a sensible choice when you do not want to commit completely to Feline offense, Griffin Signs, or Ursine defense. That balance is a build direction, not a fixed stat package. Individual Wolven pieces and tiers still need to be inspected for their armor, resistances, and listed bonuses.

Wolven is particularly useful as a comparison baseline. If a Feline piece offers a meaningful attack advantage but leaves a defensive gap, or if an Ursine piece protects you at the cost of the damage profile you want, a Wolven item may occupy the middle ground. Make that decision from the actual item cards available at your level, not from the school name alone.

Manticore: the Blood and Wine addition

Manticore belongs to the Blood and Wine set collection and is included in location guides alongside the Grandmaster paths. The available reference confirms its expansion location route but does not establish a complete, item-by-item list of Manticore armor values or bonus wording. Do not transfer Feline, Griffin, Ursine, or Wolven assumptions onto it.

When you reach a Manticore diagram, record the required level, armor category, resistances, and special lines for each component. Then decide whether those verified values support your build. The expansion requirement is certain; the exact stat comparison should come from the diagram and the in-game item display you are using.

Which set should you choose?

Use this decision sequence before spending rare crafting materials:

  1. Identify your main damage engine. If weapon attacks are the priority, start with Feline; if Signs dominate, investigate Griffin; if surviving direct hits is central, investigate Ursine; if you want a mixed plan, start with Wolven.
  2. Check the piece, not only the school. Read armor category, armor value, resistances, attack or Sign bonuses, stamina-related lines, and level requirement on every candidate.
  3. Match the tier to your progression. Basic, Enhanced, Superior, and Mastercrafted diagrams are separate upgrades. Choose a tier you can equip and craft rather than waiting for a name that is unusable now.
  4. Account for expansion ownership. Grandmaster choices require Blood and Wine. Do not plan around matching-piece bonuses if you are comparing only the standard game tiers.
  5. Count the opportunity cost. Ask what you lose by changing schools: defensive tolerance, offensive pressure, Sign support, or a balanced spread. The best set is the one whose complete stat package supports your actual skills.

Where to find Witcher gear: diagrams, hunts, and crafting

Witcher armor is acquired through diagrams and scavenger hunts, not by picking up a complete finished set from one chest. The location guides for the game cover the standard school paths, Manticore, and Grandmaster gear. Because individual diagrams can be placed in different regions and containers, use the clue or map for the specific school and tier you are pursuing.

  1. Obtain or follow the map or quest clue. A scavenger-hunt clue points you toward the school and the next diagram objective. Read the quest text rather than assuming every piece is in one location.
  2. Travel to the marked objective. Explore the indicated site and retrieve the diagram. Finding a diagram is the acquisition step; it does not create the armor automatically.
  3. Check the diagram’s recipe and level. Confirm the materials, required character level, armor category, and listed bonuses before gathering resources.
  4. Visit an appropriate crafter. Take the diagram to a crafter who can make that armor tier. The crafting screen shows whether your current materials and crafting access are sufficient.
  5. Repeat for upgrades and matching pieces. Enhanced, Superior, Mastercrafted, and Grandmaster diagrams are separate targets. For Grandmaster bonuses, collect the matching school pieces specified by the set rather than mixing schools.

Do not treat a location summary as a guarantee of an exact coordinate, chest, cave, or regional route unless that detail is verified for your platform and game version. If a marker does not appear, check that the relevant clue or scavenger-hunt quest is active and that you are pursuing the correct tier.

How to compare two pieces in your inventory

  • Weight category: confirm whether the item is light, medium, or heavy where the game displays that classification.
  • Armor and resistances: inspect physical and elemental resistance lines instead of using armor rating as the sole measure.
  • Build bonuses: record attack power, Sign support, stamina-related effects, and any other lines that directly interact with your skills.
  • Tier and level: a Mastercrafted or Grandmaster label does not remove the level requirement; ensure Geralt can equip it now.
  • Set interaction: only count matching-piece bonuses when the item is part of the Grandmaster system that grants them.
  • Crafting cost: compare the materials and crafter access before dismantling or selling a piece you may need for an upgrade.

Common mistakes and fixes

Choosing by armor rating alone

Armor rating omits the build effect of attack, Sign, stamina, and resistance lines. Re-open both item cards and compare the complete profile.

Assuming every tier shares the same bonuses

Upgrades are separate diagrams, and Grandmaster matching-piece bonuses are not ordinary-set benefits. Verify the tier named on the diagram and the set text shown in-game.

Confusing a diagram with a finished item

A diagram unlocks a recipe. You still need the materials and an appropriate crafter. If the item cannot be made, check recipe ingredients, crafting access, and the required level.

Mixing schools while expecting a set bonus

Grandmaster effects depend on matching school pieces. If you mix Feline, Griffin, Ursine, Wolven, or Manticore components, read the set requirement again before assuming the bonus is active.

Planning around an unverified Manticore statistic

The expansion requirement and scavenger-hunt route are established, but a complete Manticore stat table is not. Use the values on your own diagrams and finished items instead of borrowing numbers from another school.

Bottom line for choosing a set

Start with the combat behavior you want, then validate the exact tier and piece. Feline is the offensive light-armor direction, Griffin is the Sign direction, Ursine is the heavy defensive direction, and Wolven is the balanced direction. Blood and Wine adds Grandmaster gear and matching-piece bonuses, while Manticore expands the set choices without making its unverified stats interchangeable with the other schools. The most defensible choice is the set whose complete item cards, level requirement, crafting route, and—when applicable—Grandmaster bonus match your build.
