Before leaving White Orchard, follow the opening story far enough to learn combat, Signs, dialogue choices and Gwent, then pause between main-quest stages to explore useful nearby locations. Check every quest’s suggested level, prepare for difficult fights with the bestiary and your equipment, and play early Gwent opponents if you care about collecting cards. You do not need to clear every map marker before departing.

What White Orchard is for

White Orchard is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s opening region and its practical tutorial. The game introduces Geralt’s movement, investigation, combat, Signs, alchemy, dialogue decisions and several optional activities here before the wider journey opens up. The main story in the region revolves around Lilac and Gooseberries, Geralt’s search for Yennefer, and The Beast of White Orchard.

The best first-time route is neither a speedrun through the main objectives nor an attempt to inspect every icon immediately. Let the story introduce a system, use that system during the next few activities, then explore when you have a natural break. This keeps the opening readable while giving you enough practice and equipment to handle the fights that follow.

Start with the Kaer Morhen tutorial

The opening Kaer Morhen sequence teaches the basic controls and combat rhythm before the White Orchard story begins. Complete it rather than rushing through its instructions. You will practice movement, attacks, dodging, blocking and Signs in a relatively controlled setting, which makes the first real encounters easier to understand.

Importing or simulating earlier choices

If you played The Witcher 2, the PC manual explains that you can import a compatible save. If you do not have one, a conversation during the prologue can simulate earlier decisions. This changes continuity details, not your ability to begin the game, so a new player can safely choose the option that is available and comfortable.

Do not delay the game because you lack an old save. Save import and the simulated-choice conversation are optional continuity features, not prerequisites for White Orchard or the main adventure.

Follow the opening quests until the systems make sense

In White Orchard, let Lilac and Gooseberries establish the immediate objective and use The Beast of White Orchard to learn how investigations and monster encounters work. The walkthrough route commonly takes you through the inn and several short tutorials before the region’s optional content becomes the main choice.

The inn and the first social systems

The inn is an important early stop. Talk to the people you are directed to meet, pay attention to dialogue prompts and notice when a conversation offers an alternative outcome. The opening also demonstrates how Geralt’s Signs can affect dialogue: an Axii option may resolve a conversation differently from a normal response. You are learning that choices can have consequences, not being tested on a single correct answer.

Fist fighting

The fist-fighting tutorial introduces a different timing pattern from sword combat. Treat it as practice for reading an opponent and responding at the right moment, not as a requirement to seek every brawl in the region. If you lose, you have learned something useful about timing; the opening does not require you to master every optional contest before moving on.

Gwent’s first lesson

A scholar in the White Orchard tavern teaches Gwent. Play the tutorial even if you are unsure whether you will collect cards. It explains the board, rounds, card values and the basic reason to conserve strength rather than spend everything at once. You can decide after that first game whether Gwent will be a major side activity for your Geralt.

Choose a pace that fits your first playthrough

There is no universally correct amount of White Orchard content. Use the following approaches as a decision guide rather than as difficulty levels.

Approach What you do Best for Trade-off
Story-first Follow the main quest, complete each tutorial as it appears, and stop to check a quest’s suggested level when a fight becomes uncomfortable. Players who want momentum and minimal detours. You may leave with less practice, fewer resources and fewer early cards.
Exploration-first Between main-quest stages, inspect nearby points of interest, side activities and off-road encounters. Players who enjoy discovery, preparation and environmental details. Travel takes longer, and not every marker provides an important reward.
Gwent-focused Complete the tavern tutorial, buy available cards at the inn and challenge eligible opponents as you encounter them. Players who want to build a collection early. Some opponents can be one-time opportunities, so skipping a conversation may mean missing a card game.

You can combine the approaches. A practical compromise is to follow the story to the next objective, explore the nearby area, then return to the story when your level and equipment are comfortable.

Use suggested levels to decide when to advance

The main quest can move Geralt toward enemies above his current level. Before committing to a difficult objective, look at the recommended level shown in the quest log. A large gap is a signal to explore, complete a nearby activity or improve your equipment before forcing the encounter.

The suggested level is guidance, not a hard lock. A skilled player may defeat an enemy above the recommendation, while a new player may reasonably want an equal or higher level. If an encounter feels punishing, retreat, repair your gear, review your abilities and return after earning experience elsewhere.

A simple level check

  1. Open the quest log and read the recommended level for the objective you are about to start.
  2. Compare it with Geralt’s current level and the level of any enemy that has already defeated you.
  3. If the gap is substantial, look for nearby undiscovered locations, side quests or a safer route rather than repeatedly charging the same fight.
  4. Resume the main objective when the encounter is within a range you can handle consistently.

Explore without treating every marker as mandatory

White Orchard rewards measured exploration. Xbox Wire’s beginner guidance recommends exploring before each new phase of the main plot. Leaving the road can reveal optional encounters, resources and Places of Power, which can provide useful practice and strengthen Geralt before the next story step.

The ghoul-overrun settlement

One example described in that guidance is a settlement overrun by ghouls. Restoring the location provides a grindstone, giving you a practical equipment benefit as well as combat experience. Encounters like this show why a short detour can be worthwhile: you are not only collecting loot, you are gaining a safer place to prepare for later fights.

Places of Power and off-road discoveries

Places of Power are among the notable optional discoveries in the region. Inspecting points of interest can also reveal enemies, clues and materials that are not visible from the main road. Explore in a loop around your current objective instead of trying to sweep the entire map at once; this keeps the difficulty and travel time manageable.

Do not interpret the existence of a marker as an instruction to clear it immediately. The available guidance does not establish that every White Orchard marker is necessary before departure. If an area contains an enemy far above your level, mark it mentally and return later.

Prepare before every serious fight

Preparation is one of the most important habits to learn in White Orchard. Xbox Wire’s beginner advice emphasizes checking the bestiary, restoring vitality and stamina, selecting a useful Sign, applying an appropriate oil when available and checking equipment condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the bestiary

When Geralt encounters a monster type, read its bestiary entry. The entry identifies vulnerabilities and suggests how the creature behaves. Before a rematch, use that information to choose a Sign, oil or tactic instead of repeating the same attack pattern.

Restore vitality and stamina

Begin a difficult encounter with your vitality and stamina in a usable state. Entering a fight already injured or unable to cast the Sign you intend to use removes options before the battle starts. If you need a moment, step away from danger and recover rather than treating every fight as an endurance contest.

Choose a Sign deliberately

Different enemies respond differently to Geralt’s Signs. Select the Sign that addresses the opponent in front of you, not the one you happened to use in the last battle. The opening region is a good place to test each available option and learn which effect you can apply reliably under pressure.

Apply oil when you have it

If you possess an oil suited to the enemy type, apply it before engaging. Oils are part of the preparation loop, so checking your inventory and the bestiary together is more useful than saving every consumable indefinitely. The exact availability of recipes and ingredients depends on what you have found, so use this step when the relevant oil is actually in your inventory.

Check equipment condition

Damaged weapons and armor are a preventable source of trouble. Inspect your equipment before a demanding objective and repair it when needed. A nearby grindstone, such as the one associated with the restored settlement described by Xbox Wire, can support preparation, but do not assume every location has one.

Decide whether Gwent belongs in your route

Gwent is introduced in White Orchard rather than being something you must discover much later. The tavern scholar provides the tutorial, and cards can be bought at the inn during the prologue according to Prima Games’ guide.

If you only want to understand the game

Play the tutorial, learn the round structure and then return to the main quest. You will have seen the system and can revisit it later if a future quest makes Gwent more appealing.

If you want to collect cards

Buy available cards at the inn and play eligible opponents when you meet them. Prima warns that some opponents encountered during quests may be one-time opportunities. For a collection-focused playthrough, do not assume you can postpone every match and clean them up later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you do not enjoy card games

You can minimize Gwent after the tutorial. The opening story does not require you to become a dedicated collector, and skipping optional matches does not prevent you from leaving White Orchard. The important choice is knowing that early opponents and purchases exist, so you can make an intentional decision rather than missing them by accident.

Know what to finish before departure

The walkthrough’s final White Orchard objective is explicitly to depart the region. Treat that objective as a natural stopping point, not as proof that every optional activity must be complete. Before you leave, make the checks that matter to your chosen route.

  • Complete the Kaer Morhen tutorial and understand the basic combat controls.
  • Advance Lilac and Gooseberries and The Beast of White Orchard far enough to learn the opening systems.
  • Read at least one relevant bestiary entry before a difficult monster fight.
  • Check the suggested level for your next main-quest objective.
  • Repair or improve equipment when condition or damage is affecting your fights.
  • Explore nearby points of interest if you want extra practice, resources or Places of Power.
  • Play the Gwent tutorial and meet early opponents if card collecting matters to you.
  • Leave unexplored high-level locations for a later visit instead of forcing them now.

Common first-time mistakes and fixes

Trying to clear every icon immediately

Why it hurts: You can spend time on encounters that are too difficult or provide little immediate value.

Fix: Explore around your current objective, use the suggested level as a guide and return later to anything that feels out of range.

Repeating a failed fight without changing the plan

Why it hurts: Repeating the same approach does not address a vulnerability, damaged weapon or missing preparation.

Fix: Read the bestiary, restore vitality and stamina, choose a more suitable Sign, apply an available oil and repair your equipment before trying again.

Ignoring Gwent until every quest is finished

Why it hurts: Some quest-related opponents may be available only once.

Fix: If collecting cards is important, play eligible opponents as they appear and check the inn for cards during the prologue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming imported choices are required

Why it hurts: New players can feel blocked by not having a Witcher 2 save.

Fix: Use the prologue conversation to simulate prior choices, or proceed without importing. Both are optional continuity paths.

Using platform-specific button advice from another version

Why it hurts: Controls and some features can vary by platform and game version.

Fix: Follow the control prompts shown by your own version and consult its settings or manual rather than relying on an unverified button label.

When should you leave White Orchard?

Leave when the opening quests have taught you the systems you intend to use, your next objective is at a manageable suggested level and you have made any time-sensitive Gwent choices that matter to you. Story-first players may depart soon after the required tutorials. Explorers may take additional loops through nearby points of interest. Gwent collectors should finish available early matches and purchases before following the departure objective.

The wider game is advertised by Bandai Namco as offering more than 100 hours of core and side-quest gameplay, but that figure describes the complete adventure, not a target for White Orchard. There is no established White Orchard completion-time requirement and no reason to turn the opening region into a checklist.

A spoiler-light route in one view

  1. Complete the Kaer Morhen tutorial.
  2. Choose whether to import Witcher 2 choices or simulate them in the prologue conversation.
  3. Follow Lilac and Gooseberries and the connected The Beast of White Orchard objectives.
  4. Use the inn to learn the early dialogue, Axii, fist-fighting and Gwent systems as they appear.
  5. Pause before the next major story phase to inspect your quest levels, equipment and supplies.
  6. Explore nearby optional locations, including useful encounters and Places of Power, without forcing high-level fights.
  7. Read the bestiary and prepare Signs, oils, vitality, stamina and equipment condition before serious combat.
  8. Play early Gwent opponents or buy cards if collecting matters to you.
  9. Follow the “Depart White Orchard” objective when your chosen route is complete.

This route teaches the systems, leaves room for discovery and avoids presenting optional content as mandatory. White Orchard has done its job when you understand how to prepare, how to judge a quest’s level, and which detours are worth your time for the way you want to play.
