Start with the resolution you actually play at and your frame-rate goal, then tune visual features around what your system can sustain. This guide covers PC settings and the current Remastered context; console modes are different and should not be treated as equivalent.
Check your version and PC before tuning
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered became available on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for owners on listed platforms. CD PROJEKT RED identifies Path Tracing on PC and PS5 Pro support, but the older 4.0 settings notes are not a complete settings guide for Remastered. Check the options shown in your own game build rather than assuming every historical feature or label is unchanged. CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered announcement

- Note your platform, game version, display resolution, GPU, and preferred frame-rate target before comparing settings.
- CD PROJEKT RED says an SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements. Its current PC requirements page also says Windows 10 is no longer officially supported or tested, though the game may still run on it. Read the current PC requirements
Resolution is a major part of the decision: CD PROJEKT RED states, “Higher resolution will significantly affect FPS.” Its support page also cautions that performance varies with the scene, system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution. Its published FPS targets are based on QA tests, and it notes that occasional fluctuations may occur during gameplay. CD PROJEKT RED Support

Choose a starting route
| Priority | Start with | Trade-off to watch |
|---|---|---|
| More consistent performance | Begin without ray tracing or Path Tracing. Use your intended output resolution, then consider a supported upscaler if available in your game build and GPU configuration. | Lower resolution or reduced scene detail can affect image clarity or the amount of detail on screen. |
| Balanced image and performance | Keep the intended output resolution, start with conventional graphics features, and adjust demanding detail settings in small groups. Add ray-traced features only if performance has room. | The balance depends on the scene and hardware; judge it during actual play, not only in a menu. |
| Visual quality first | Raise detail settings and test ray tracing or Path Tracing if your build and hardware offer them. Use an upscaler supported by that build and hardware when useful. | These advanced lighting options can make performance the limiting factor. No universal FPS cost is established for each setting. |
These are practical starting routes, not CD PROJEKT RED-certified presets or benchmark results. In its December 2022 4.0 notes, the studio listed PC Ultra+ controls for background characters, shadows, grass density, textures, foliage visibility, terrain, water, and detail. Those categories can help you decide what to tune, but the old notes do not establish a universal ranking of their performance cost or describe every Remastered option. See the 4.0 update notes

How to tune PC settings without guessing
- Set your output resolution first. Use the resolution you intend to play at. Compare settings only after it is fixed, because changing resolution also changes performance.
- Establish a baseline. Start with a non-ray-traced route if you are struggling to maintain smooth play. Record how the game looks and feels in a repeatable area.
- Change one group at a time. Adjust scene-detail options, such as shadows, grass, foliage, or background characters, in your build’s graphics menu. Play the same area again before making another change.
- Test advanced lighting separately. Try ray tracing or Path Tracing only if those options appear in your version and your system has performance headroom. Compare the image and frame pacing against your baseline.
- Check upscaling compatibility. Choose only an upscaler actually offered by your current game build and supported by your hardware. The 4.0 notes named FSR 2.1 and DLSS 3 for compatible hardware, but that historical list does not guarantee support in every Remastered configuration.
- Keep the setting that works in play. Check more than one demanding area and pay attention to consistency as well as average smoothness. If the result is unsatisfactory, revert the last change rather than changing several options at once.
What ray tracing, Path Tracing, and upscaling mean for the choice
In its 4.0 PC notes, CD PROJEKT RED described ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion, with reflections and shadows available on compatible PC hardware. The 2026 Remastered announcement confirms PC Path Tracing, but does not make the older feature list a complete description of Remastered’s current options. 4.0 PC feature notes · Remastered release details
Upscaling can be part of the resolution-versus-performance decision, but compatibility depends on the current game build and hardware. NVIDIA’s explanation of the 2022 update distinguished DLSS 3 Frame Generation on GeForce RTX 40 Series cards from DLSS 2 Super Resolution support on RTX PCs. Treat those as historical, vendor-documented details for that release—not a guarantee about Remastered. NVIDIA’s 2022 feature explanation

Console modes are not PC presets
The December 2022 next-gen announcement described PS5 and Xbox Series X Ray Tracing mode as targeting 30 FPS and Performance mode as targeting 60 FPS. It described Xbox Series S as having no ray tracing, with Quality and Performance modes. These were claims for that older update, not verified Remastered targets. The Remastered announcement identifies PS5 Pro support, but does not establish current console mode names or frame-rate targets. Check the current in-game mode menu and platform-specific patch notes for your version. 2022 console mode announcement · Remastered announcement
Bottom line for your settings
For a PC that needs smoother performance, start without ray tracing or Path Tracing and tune resolution and scene detail incrementally. For a PC with headroom, test advanced lighting and supported upscaling against the same gameplay areas. In either case, keep the settings that deliver the image and consistency you want in your version of the game—not a preset assumed to work for every system.
