The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine is a strongly praised, though not universally acclaimed, expansion that gives Geralt a substantial new adventure in the region of Toussaint. Reviews highlight its setting and breadth, while at least one critical response takes issue with its gameplay. If you want more Witcher 3 after the main story, the overall critical picture is encouraging.
What is Blood and Wine?
Released on May 31, 2016, Blood and Wine is the second and final expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s launch announcement. It sends Geralt to Toussaint, a new region that PC Gamer described as a huge, gorgeous addition to the game.
What do critics think of Blood and Wine?
The available reviews point to a highly positive reception, but they are not a complete industry-wide score average and do not show unanimity. In its June 2016 launch post, CD PROJEKT RED reported these scores:
| Publication | Score reported by CD PROJEKT RED |
|---|---|
| GryOnline.pl | 100/100 (2016) |
| PC Gamer | 94/100 (2016) |
| XGN | 96/100 (2016) |
Those are three publisher-reported scores, not a complete current aggregate. Separately, GameSpot rated the expansion 8/10. The review excerpts on Metacritic’s critic-review page include both praise and criticism, including an objection to gameplay. The evidence supports calling the reception strongly positive, not claiming that every reviewer liked every aspect.

What reviewers valued—and where opinions differ
Toussaint and exploration
Toussaint gives the expansion a distinct new setting. PC Gamer’s description of it as a huge, gorgeous addition captures the setting’s appeal and scale; that assessment is a review judgment, not a measured comparison with the base game.
Story and character writing
Blood and Wine is framed as Geralt’s final expansion adventure, which makes its story’s role as a concluding chapter part of its appeal. The available review material does not establish a detailed consensus on the quality of its character writing, so it would overstate the evidence to say critics uniformly praised that element.

Content and pacing
GameSpot reported more than 90 new quests and estimated around 30 hours of gameplay. Treat the time as a publication estimate, not a completion-time promise: play style and optional activities affect how long a run takes. The quest count and stated length indicate substantial breadth, but do not by themselves prove that every part of the adventure stays equally engaging.
Gameplay
The critical picture is not unreserved: a Metacritic review excerpt objects to gameplay. The available material does not establish that this was a shared complaint or provide enough detail to describe every reviewer’s view of combat and added systems. Players who mainly want a new setting and a large questing adventure have stronger support in the cited coverage than players seeking a clear critical consensus on gameplay changes.
Rank #3
- Welcome to the land of summer, a remote valley untouched by war.
- Blood and Wine offers over 20 hours of adventure, where beauty clashes with horror, and love dances with deceit.
Is Blood and Wine worth playing?
For players who want a substantial continuation of The Witcher 3, the combination of a new region, more than 90 reported quests, and strong review scores makes Blood and Wine an appealing choice. The qualification is that the praise is not universal, particularly on gameplay; the cited evidence does not justify presenting it as flawless or as a guaranteed fit for every player.
How long is Blood and Wine?
GameSpot’s 2016 estimate was around 30 hours, alongside its report of more than 90 new quests. That is a guide to the expansion’s scale, not a fixed duration; the time you spend will vary with your pace and how much optional content you pursue.

Do you need The Witcher 3 to play Blood and Wine?
Blood and Wine is an expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, not a standalone release. If you do not already own the base game, CD PROJEKT RED said the Game of the Year Edition bundles the base game, both expansions, and DLC in its edition announcement. A current Complete Edition may also include the expansion, but verify the exact platform and listing before buying; the announcement does not establish present-day availability or platform-specific packaging.
