The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is the current release to look for if you are buying new: CD PROJEKT RED says its Complete Edition includes the base game plus both story expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. If you already own the game, check your platform’s entitlement before buying again; qualifying owners may receive the Remastered update and expansions at no extra cost, but the route depends on the store and platform.
Which Witcher 3 edition should you buy?
Your best choice depends first on whether you already own the game, then on your platform and the exact generation of the listing.
- Buying new: Choose the current platform-specific The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered / Complete Edition listing and confirm that it is for your platform and preferred format. The publisher says the digital offering is now the Complete Edition, with both expansions merged into it. CD PROJEKT RED’s current game page says the standalone digital Base Game is no longer offered.
- Already own the base game: Check the publisher’s route for your platform before paying for a second copy. The August 25, 2026 announcement identifies free Remastered upgrades for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, while Battle.net and Nintendo Switch 2 are listed as pre-purchase platforms. The announcement also says Switch owners can claim the Switch 2 edition when it releases. Verify the entitlement in your own store or account rather than assuming every platform has the same one-step process.
- Considering a used or older physical copy: Treat the 2022 Complete Edition and the 2026 Remastered release as distinct generations. The publisher confirmed a physical 2022 Complete Edition, but that does not establish that a particular disc is the 2026 Remastered SKU or that a current physical Remastered edition is available. The 2022 announcement is historical evidence of that earlier physical release, not confirmation of current stock or disc entitlements.
Retailer naming alone may not establish the generation, included content, or upgrade eligibility. Check the platform, edition, and physical or digital format on the listing before purchase.
Does The Witcher 3 Complete Edition include all DLC?
The Complete Edition includes the base game and the two major story expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The publisher’s current page also lists free DLC among the game’s content, but the two expansions are the key paid story additions buyers should verify. This guide’s use of “Complete Edition” refers to the publisher’s current bundle; an older retail copy may be a different generation and format.

For existing base-game owners, CD PROJEKT RED says that, since August 25, 2026, both expansions are available at no extra cost when the free Remastered update is installed. The official expansion exchange page says unused expansion codes no longer need to be registered or exchanged. The current FAQ also says that PS4 and Xbox One base-game owners can download the expansions for free, while those previous-generation storefronts otherwise remain unchanged. Check the FAQ for the platform-specific instructions: official game page and FAQ.
How do upgrade options differ by platform?
| Platform or store | What the publisher says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store | Qualifying owners receive the Remastered upgrade at no extra charge, according to the August 25, 2026 announcement. | Sign in to the account that owns the game and check the current listing or library entitlement. |
| PS5, Xbox Series X|S | Qualifying owners receive the Remastered upgrade at no extra charge, according to the same announcement. | Use the account and platform storefront associated with the existing license; confirm the edition shown before purchasing. |
| Battle.net | Remastered is listed as available for pre-purchase in the August 25, 2026 announcement; that announcement does not state a free-upgrade route for Battle.net owners. | Check the Battle.net listing and account entitlement rather than applying another store’s upgrade rules. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Remastered is listed as available for pre-purchase. The announcement says Switch owners can claim the Switch 2 edition when it releases. | Confirm release availability and claim instructions for the relevant Nintendo account. |
| PS4, Xbox One | The current FAQ says base-game owners can download the two expansions for free; it says previous-generation storefronts otherwise remain unchanged. | Check the platform store and FAQ for the specific update and expansion path. |
These are publisher-stated routes, not a guarantee that all storefronts, regions, or account situations behave identically. Cross-progression is not cross-buy: a compatible save moving between platforms does not mean one purchase grants a license on every platform.

What changed in the 2026 Remastered release?
CD PROJEKT RED describes Remastered as updating visuals and gameplay. Its current product page lists enhanced environment, NPC, and monster textures; foliage improvements; reworked lighting, rendering, and ray tracing; revised combat animations and camera; an overhauled skill tree; cross-platform mod support; transmogrification; and an expanded photo mode. These are publisher descriptions, not independent performance measurements. See the current product page for the full feature description.
Do not use specifications from the December 2022 version 4.0 update as guaranteed Remastered benchmarks. In those historical notes, PS5 and Xbox Series X had ray-tracing and performance modes targeting 30 FPS and 60 FPS respectively; Xbox Series S had no ray tracing and quality/performance modes with the same stated targets. PC notes included DLSS 3 on compatible hardware. These dated targets describe the earlier update, not measured results or confirmed 2026 behavior. The publisher’s 2022 notes also cautioned that update scope varied by platform.

Will saves and expansion access carry over?
The current publisher FAQ says save files remain compatible and Cross Progression continues to work as before. It also says expansion content already owned remains in the player’s library, is patched into the Base Game, and can still be started separately from the main menu; expansion achievements and trophies remain unaffected. These statements describe save and content behavior, not a license that transfers the game purchase between platforms. The publisher’s current details are on its game FAQ page.
Is the Complete Edition worth buying?
For a new player who wants the full story, the current Complete Edition is the straightforward choice because it bundles the base game with both major expansions. If you already own the base game, first check the same-platform update and expansion entitlement: paying for a second copy may be unnecessary. If you are shopping for a physical copy, verify the generation and contents of the exact SKU; the existence of a physical 2022 Complete Edition does not prove a current physical Remastered edition is on sale.
