The PC mod Remastered Washed-Out Look Fix – Deep Blacks (SDR and HDR) offers two alternatives: one lowers the lifted black floor while retaining the remastered look; the other aims for a broader return to The Witcher 3 version 4.0’s warmer tone. Choose only one. The right choice depends on whether you want a targeted black-level correction or a more substantial visual shift.
Why can The Witcher 3’s remastered visuals look washed out?
The mod’s author, Lutzelodeon, describes version 5.0 as having a grey, washed-out appearance, with dark scenes that do not reach deep blacks—particularly at night. The author separates this tone-curve and black-level issue from other changes in the remastered lighting, including bluer sky light in shadowed areas and paler skies. This is the mod author’s explanation, not an official diagnosis from CD Projekt Red.
An independent Windows Central review also noted that some areas looked too washed out or too dark after the visual upgrade, while describing improvements to environmental assets and lighting.
Which mod option should you choose?

The mod page says not to install both options because they change the same files. Neither is described as a universal winner; choose based on the look you prefer and whether you use SDR or HDR. See the mod description for the current files and details.

What the mod can—and cannot—fix
The author says a global mod cannot recreate version 4.0’s region-by-region grading or undo all of the remastered lighting differences. Some sunny areas may remain brighter than they were in 4.0: lowering daylight globally would also darken shaded areas and nighttime scenes. Next-Gen Look is therefore an approximation of the older presentation, not an exact restoration for every location.
What do the author’s measurements show?
Lutzelodeon reports the following comparisons from the same save and camera in SDR, with ray tracing on (not path tracing) and Bloom on. “Darkest 1%” describes the darkest pixel values in that portion of the image; 0 is black. These are the mod author’s measurements, not an independent benchmark.

In the author’s SDR comparison, both options bring Skellige’s nighttime darkest-pixel value much closer to version 4.0 than vanilla 5.0. The daytime Toussaint figures also show the distinction between the files: AgX leaves the reported median brightness at 0.41, while Next-Gen Look lowers it to 0.34, compared with 0.28 in version 4.0.
For HDR, the author reports a separate Skellige-at-night comparison at Paper White 200 and Max Brightness 1000: darkest 1% measured 0.41 nits in vanilla, 0.015 nits with AgX Black Level Fix, and 0.13 nits with Next-Gen Look. These figures are also author-reported and apply to those stated settings.

How to install the mod and enable it
The Nexus listing showed version 1.4, updated 3 October 2026, and says the files were made for game patch 5.00c. The author checks environment files after patches, but that does not establish compatibility with later updates; check the live listing after a game patch.
- Download and extract exactly one main file: AgX Black Level Fix or Next-Gen Look.
- Place the selected files in the game folder, following the mod’s installation instructions.
- In the game, open Options → Gameplay and enable Enable mods and Enable local mods, then restart.
- If you selected Next-Gen Look for SDR, install ReShade 6.x for the game’s DirectX executable and select the
W3NextGenLook_SDR.inipreset. You do not need ReShade for AgX Black Level Fix.
The author notes that it is normal for the mod not to appear in the in-game mod list. If the effect seems absent, confirm both mod toggles are enabled and restart; the author’s guidance is available in the Nexus mod posts.

HDR and SDR: what to check
The mod listing says the game follows the Windows HDR setting rather than providing its own HDR switch. Lutzelodeon’s description gives Win + Alt + B as the Windows shortcut for toggling HDR. Check whether Windows HDR is on before comparing screenshots: an SDR image and an HDR image are not a like-for-like comparison. The HDR mod path does not require ReShade.
Try a settings change before downloading
As a no-download PC troubleshooting step, AllThings.How’s guide, updated 30 September 2026, recommends turning Bloom off in the graphics or video settings. It suggests this may restore contrast in outdoor scenes; it is not established as a guaranteed fix for every washed-out image. The same guide treats Chromatic Aberration, Motion Blur, Vignetting and Blur as preference settings rather than universal causes.

For a useful comparison, change one thing at a time. Try Bloom off, or test one of the mod options, using the same save, location, time of day and display mode. Do not combine the two mod files.
