Not reliably if the Pi 5 has to encode the video live. Raspberry Pi’s published H.264 result is real-time 1080p30 software encoding; the Pi 5’s 4Kp60 display and HEVC-decoding capabilities do not mean it can encode 4Kp60. A pre-encoded file relayed without video re-encoding may be possible, but that exact workflow has not been established as reliable. If dependable 4K60 is essential, use an encoder suited to that workload.
Why 4K display support does not mean 4K60 encoding
The Raspberry Pi 5 can drive two 4Kp60 displays and decode 4Kp60 HEVC video. Those are distinct capabilities from encoding a live video stream. Raspberry Pi’s BCM2712 documentation describes display output and HEVC hardware decoding, and notes that other codecs run in software: Raspberry Pi BCM2712 documentation. The Pi 5 launch article likewise identifies a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, not an encoder: Introducing: Raspberry Pi 5!.
For camera streaming, Raspberry Pi’s instructions say to use the software encoder x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1 on Pi 5, replacing the hardware-encoder pipeline element used on earlier models. The vendor’s H.264 performance white paper reports real-time 1080p30 software encoding. That result applies to the published test—not every workload or configuration—and does not establish real-time 4K60 encoding: Raspberry Pi camera streaming instructions and H.264 encoding performance on Raspberry Pi 5-series computers.
Which 4K60 loop workflow are you using?
| Workflow | What the Pi must do | Practical assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Encode a live source at 4K60 | Encode every frame in software at 4K60. | Not a reliable choice based on the published Pi 5 result, which is 1080p30. |
| Relay a pre-encoded video file | Send compatible encoded video without decoding and re-encoding it; still handle container, timestamps, audio and RTMP/RTMPS muxing. | Potentially avoids the main encoding load, but the exact Pi 5-to-YouTube workflow and its sustained stability are not established. Test end to end before relying on it. |
| Use an external encoder | Move real-time 4K60 encoding off the Pi. | The safer route when 4K60 is a firm requirement. Confirm codec, bitrate, RTMPS support and upload headroom. |
| Reduce output to 1080p30 | Encode at the resolution and frame rate matching the vendor-published real-time result. | A more credible Pi 5 fallback, though the complete setup and chosen settings still need testing. |
A “stream copy” pipeline only avoids video re-encoding if it genuinely passes through the already encoded video. Check that the file’s codec and container, timestamps, audio and output muxing are compatible; merely choosing a relay-oriented workflow does not guarantee that the video will remain untouched.

YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings
YouTube allows live video up to 60 fps and lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, HEVC or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current 2160p60 recommendations are 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for HEVC or AV1. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not evidence that a Pi 5 can encode or sustain those streams. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Your internet connection must sustain the video target plus audio and room for network variation. Pi 5’s Gigabit Ethernet port describes its local network interface; it does not guarantee your internet upload rate or a stable route to YouTube. Check the connection you will actually stream over rather than treating the port’s link speed as available upload bandwidth.

How to choose and validate a setup
- Decide whether the Pi encodes. If it must encode a live source at 4K60, choose another encoder for dependable results. If relaying a file, verify that your pipeline stream-copies compatible encoded video instead of silently decoding and re-encoding it.
- Match YouTube’s ingest configuration. Set a supported codec, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds); use RTMPS where supported. For 2160p60, use the bitrate recommendation that corresponds to your selected codec.
- Check the whole data path. Confirm sustained internet upload headroom, audio muxing, timestamps and a stable connection—not just that the Pi can play or display the file.
- Run an end-to-end test. Start an unlisted or private test stream if appropriate for your channel, inspect YouTube’s stream health and watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio issues or disconnects. Let the intended workflow run long enough to expose problems before depending on it for a continuous broadcast.
Common problems and what to check
- Encoding overload or dropped frames: A live 4K60 encode is beyond what the cited Pi 5 result establishes. Move encoding to a more suitable device, or try a lower resolution and frame rate such as 1080p30.
- File relay still uses heavy CPU: Confirm the pipeline is stream-copying video. A codec conversion, scaling step or other video re-encode restores the processing load the relay was meant to avoid.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare the configured bitrate with the selected codec’s 2160p60 recommendation and check sustained upload capacity, connection stability and CBR settings.
- Video is rejected or does not play correctly: Check codec and container compatibility, timestamps, audio handling, RTMP/RTMPS muxing and keyframe interval. A compatible video file alone does not establish that the complete outgoing stream is valid.
- Display output works but the live stream does not: HDMI display capability and HEVC decoding do not establish encoding capability. Check which encoder the streaming pipeline actually uses.
Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Technical compatibility does not grant permission to broadcast a video. Use footage, music and other material you own or are authorized to stream, and review the terms that apply to your content and channel. A loop’s duration or live presentation does not itself resolve copyright or channel-policy concerns.
