If The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt won’t start, crashes, or stutters on PC, first note your platform, storefront, game version, DirectX mode, and mod use. Then check requirements, verify the game files, and reduce possible software conflicts. Steam Deck players have one specific official launch fix: choose DirectX 11 in REDlauncher. These steps can help identify common problems, but they cannot guarantee a fix for every system or game build.
Start with the platform, version, and symptom
Before changing settings, record what you’re running and exactly when the problem occurs. CD PROJEKT RED’s support form asks for your platform, storefront, game version, DirectX mode, and whether you use mods, trainers, or console commands. The game version appears in the main menu beneath the title. Open the official support form to see the requested details.

- Is this Windows PC or Steam Deck, and which storefront is involved?
- Does the game fail before REDlauncher, in the launcher, or after the game begins?
- Did the issue start after a game or graphics-driver update?
- Does it happen everywhere or only with a particular save or location?
- Are mods, trainers, or console commands in use?
These questions help narrow down the issue; they are practical triage, not a required publisher checklist.
Check PC requirements and the installed build
CD PROJEKT RED recommends confirming that a PC meets the applicable system requirements when troubleshooting crashes. Its requirements notice says new minimums apply “Starting from the next update,” and states that The Witcher 3 will use DirectX 12 exclusively under those requirements. The notice does not establish here that the update is already effective for every installed build, so don’t treat those future minimums as current requirements without checking the release status for your version.

- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
The notice lists these upcoming minimum specifications:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel Core i5-8400
- GPU: GeForce GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB
- Video memory: 6 GB VRAM
- Memory: 12 GB RAM
- Storage: 70 GB SSD
- Operating system: 64-bit Windows 11
CD PROJEKT RED says Windows 11 and active driver support are tied to its decision not to test on Windows 10 after Microsoft’s support end date of October 14, 2025. For the effective date and exact requirements applicable to your build, consult the official requirements notice.
Verify the game files for crashes or launch failures
Corrupted or incomplete game files can cause crashes or prevent the game from launching. Use the verification option for the storefront where you installed The Witcher 3:
| Storefront | Verification path |
|---|---|
| GOG GALAXY | Owned games → Customize → Manage installation → Verify/Repair |
| Steam | Library → right-click The Witcher 3 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files |
| Epic Games | Library → three-dot menu for the game → Manage → Verify |
| Battle.net | Open the game page → cog menu → Scan and Repair |
When the check finishes, try launching again and note whether the symptom changed. The exact labels can vary with storefront updates; CD PROJEKT RED’s crash troubleshooting instructions list these repair paths.

For performance problems such as stuttering or low frame rates, CD PROJEKT RED recommends disabling overlays and closing unnecessary applications. Overlays may come from Discord, Ubisoft Connect, or GOG GALAXY; the publisher also calls out hardware-monitoring software and antivirus or anti-malware programs as possible conflicts.

- Turn off nonessential overlays and close applications you do not need while playing.
- If you temporarily disable security software as a diagnostic test, avoid downloads or other risky activity during the test, then restore protection promptly.
- Clean-install the graphics driver using the GPU vendor’s driver installer.
- If the issue began immediately after a driver update, try the previous driver as a diagnostic step. An older driver can sometimes help, but reverting is not a universal fix.
After each change, test the same scene or save where the problem occurred. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell whether a step helped. See CD PROJEKT RED’s performance troubleshooting guidance for its recommendations.

For a Steam Deck launch crash, CD PROJEKT RED’s platform-specific recommendation is to launch the game in DirectX 11 mode. DirectX 12 is the default in REDlauncher, so switch the mode there before starting the game. The publisher states: “The game on Steam Deck devices should be launched in DirectX 11 mode.” This instruction is for Steam Deck; it does not establish that Windows PC players should generally use DirectX 11 or that it is more stable across PC configurations.
See the official launch troubleshooting article for the Steam Deck guidance and launch-report details.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, contact CD PROJEKT RED through its support channel. Include your platform and storefront, game version, DirectX mode, and whether you use mods, trainers, or console commands. The publisher’s form also requests a DxDiag report.
