The 2022 Next-Gen update is a substantial visual upgrade over PC Classic 1.32, adding ray-traced lighting on supported platforms, sharper character and environment details, and platform-specific graphics modes. Its frame-rate numbers are targets, not guarantees: PS5 and Xbox Series X offer modes targeting 30 or 60 FPS, while Xbox Series S targets 30 or 60 FPS without ray tracing. On PC, results depend on hardware, resolution, and settings.
This comparison is specifically between Classic 1.32 and the 2022 update, which began at version 4.0. It does not treat the separate 2026 Remastered release as another name for Next-Gen.

What is the difference between Witcher 3 Classic and next-gen?
“Classic” is CD PROJEKT RED’s label for version 1.32 on PC. The 2022 Next-Gen update moved the game to version 4.0 at launch; subsequent updates mean the current build number may differ. The update added modern rendering options and visual refinements, but features vary by platform. CD PROJEKT RED’s version guidance identifies 1.32 as Classic and notes that reverting to an earlier version can depend on platform.
The comparison below concerns the 2022 update for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch received a separate update and do not share the full current-generation feature set. The 2022 patch notes also caution that update scope varies by platform. CD PROJEKT RED’s change list is the platform-specific reference.

Lighting, reflections, and shadows
On PC and current-generation consoles, Next-Gen adds ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion. On compatible PC hardware, players can also enable ray-traced reflections and shadows. These are rendering features, not a promise that every platform or graphics mode uses the same effects: in particular, Series S has no ray tracing in the 2022 update.
Textures, vegetation, and world detail
The update includes selected 4K-upscaled character textures, higher-resolution self-shadowing for main characters, improved vegetation and water, updated sky textures, a new “Gray Sky” weather type, mesh and visual-effects changes, and refinements to environments and cutscenes. It also incorporates community mods or mod-inspired improvements. On PC, the ULTRA+ settings raise options such as crowd count, shadows, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water, and level of detail.
For consoles, CD PROJEKT RED describes enhancements to textures and fidelity, shadow quality, draw distances, and crowd density. The publisher does not quantify each change against Classic or establish that every scene looks uniformly better, so treat these as a list of implemented improvements rather than a measured image-quality score.

It has 60 FPS-targeting modes on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, but a target is not the same as a locked frame rate. CD PROJEKT RED’s December 2022 notes describe dynamic resolution in the PS5 and Series X modes; actual consistency can vary with scene and patch. The figures in the table are publisher-stated targets, not independent benchmark results. See the 2022 official mode descriptions.

| Platform, 2022 update | Mode and publisher-stated target | Ray tracing and resolution notes |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Ray Tracing mode: 30 FPS target. Performance mode: 60 FPS target. | Ray Tracing mode includes ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion. Both modes use dynamic resolution. |
| Xbox Series X | Ray Tracing mode: 30 FPS target. Performance mode: 60 FPS target. | As on PS5, the official mode descriptions include dynamic resolution; RT mode uses ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion. |
| Xbox Series S | Quality mode: 30 FPS target. Performance mode: 60 FPS target. | No ray-tracing features. Quality prioritizes higher resolution and image fidelity; Performance prioritizes smoothness. |
| PC | No single publisher FPS target applies across configurations. | ULTRA+, optional ray tracing, DLSS 3 on compatible hardware, and FSR 2.1 are supported; results vary with components, resolution, settings, and scene. |
Dynamic resolution adjusts image resolution to help meet a mode’s performance target; it does not mean the game renders at one fixed resolution in every moment. The official mode descriptions do not establish a resolution-equivalent comparison between modes or a universal observed frame rate.
How does PC performance depend on settings?
The update adds PC options rather than one performance profile that suits every system. ULTRA+ raises several demanding quality settings. Ray tracing adds further rendering work, while DLSS 3 (on compatible hardware) and FSR 2.1 provide upscaling options. A feature being listed in the game does not mean it is available on every GPU, nor does it predict a particular FPS result.
When comparing a PC result with another player’s, check that the build, CPU and GPU, output resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing options, and upscaling state match. A result without those details cannot reliably show how Classic and Next-Gen compare on your system. CD PROJEKT RED says its current requirements’ expected FPS targets are based on QA testing and may fluctuate with scene, gameplay, system configuration, settings, and output resolution; consult the official game page for current requirements. Its requirements page states that an SSD is required for current technical enhancements and that Windows 10 is no longer officially supported, although the game may still run without a compatibility or performance guarantee.

The official feature lists establish which enhancements and options were added, but they are not a controlled, platform-wide Classic-versus-Next-Gen test. They do not provide a universal percentage increase in performance, one average FPS figure, or a quantified improvement in image quality. The clearest practical difference is that Next-Gen offers more detailed visual settings and newer rendering features, with the cost or benefit depending on the hardware and mode used.
Rank #3
For a fair comparison, use the same platform where possible and record the exact build, scene, resolution, graphics settings, and performance mode. On PC, also note whether ray tracing and upscaling are enabled. Otherwise, a visual or FPS difference may reflect a settings or hardware change rather than the edition alone.

Yes. CD PROJEKT RED said eligible owners of the original PS4, Xbox One, and PC release could upgrade to the 2022 Next-Gen version for free. The digital Complete Edition launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store on December 14, 2022. A boxed PS5 and Xbox Series X Complete Edition was also released in January 2023 for buyers who need a copy; buying that edition is not required for eligible existing owners to get the upgrade. The launch announcement and physical-release announcement give the publisher’s details.
How does the 2026 Remastered release fit in?
As of October 4, 2026, the 2022 Next-Gen update is no longer the newest release. CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026 as a free upgrade for eligible owners on supported platforms. The publisher describes broader visual and gameplay changes, including improved environment, NPC, and monster textures; foliage and lighting/rendering updates; PC path tracing; PS5 Pro support; and reworked combat and animations. Those features belong to Remastered, not the 2022 Next-Gen comparison. Consult CD PROJEKT RED’s official news page for Remastered details and updates.
The distinction matters on PC, where Classic 1.32 remains separately selectable. CD PROJEKT RED’s October 1, 2026 PC hotfix adjusted Velen visuals, reverted a HairWorks change that had caused serious issues for some users, and fixed a failure to launch Classic 1.32. When discussing visuals or performance now, identify whether a result is from Classic 1.32, a specific 2022 Next-Gen build, or Remastered; they are not interchangeable labels.
