Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor smoother gameplay in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on PC, first disable ray tracing or path tracing if your frame rate is struggling. Next, lower output resolution or enable an upscaler supported by your GPU. If performance still falls short, reduce graphics quality settings gradually and compare results in the same scene. These are sensible troubleshooting priorities, not guaranteed FPS gains: performance varies by hardware, settings, resolution and gameplay scene.
Check which PC version you have
This advice is for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released for PC on September 29, 2026. It uses native DirectX 12 rendering and is DirectX 12-only, according to NVIDIA’s Remastered feature overview. That differs from the 2022 Next-Gen release, which offered DX11 and DX12 options. If you are playing an earlier edition, its renderer and settings costs may differ; do not apply Remastered-specific assumptions to it.

CD PROJEKT RED says existing owners can upgrade to Remastered for free within their platform ecosystem and recommends installing current graphics drivers. See the official Remastered announcement for the release details.
Which settings should you turn down first?
1. Disable ray tracing or path tracing
If the GPU is the bottleneck, turn off ray tracing or path tracing first and check whether the game becomes smoother. These advanced lighting modes add substantial visual detail; path tracing combines lighting effects into a unified rendering approach and is positioned as a high-end feature. NVIDIA notes that RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs benefit from Shader Execution Reordering for path tracing.

#1 Best Overall
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
This is a priority to test, not a promise of a particular frame-rate increase. CD PROJEKT RED’s official support page describes performance targets under specific configurations, including automatic upscaling for its ray-tracing and path-tracing targets, and Frame Generation for the path-tracing configuration. Those conditions mean the figures should not be treated as a direct comparison of individual toggles. See CD PROJEKT RED’s system-requirements and performance notes.
2. Reduce output resolution or enable upscaling
Higher output resolution can significantly affect FPS, says CD PROJEKT RED. If you want to keep a high-resolution display but need more performance, try a compatible upscaler. Remastered supports NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, AMD FSR 4 with Frame Generation and Anti-Lag 2 on Radeon RX 7000-series and newer GPUs (FSR 2 is used on unsupported GPUs), and Intel XeSS 2.0 with Frame Generation and Low Latency. The available options depend on your graphics hardware; check the in-game menu and the Remastered announcement for the stated support details.
Upscaling can trade image quality for performance, and Frame Generation availability is hardware-dependent. Compare the result at your intended output resolution rather than assuming every option will appear or behave the same on every PC.
3. Lower graphics quality in small steps
If disabling advanced lighting and adjusting resolution are not enough, reduce quality settings one at a time. The 2022 Next-Gen version’s Ultra+ preset covered background-character count, shadow quality, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water and detail level. These are reasonable categories to test for performance headroom, but that list is version-specific and the available sources do not establish Remastered’s FPS cost for each setting.
Start with a modest change, revisit the same scene, then continue only if you still need more performance. This makes it easier to see which visual trade-offs matter on your system instead of lowering everything at once. The historical categories are described in CD PROJEKT RED’s 2022 Next-Gen announcement.

Use the same save, scene, output resolution and settings for each comparison. A busy town, combat encounter and quiet landscape can put different loads on a PC, so a result from one moment may not predict another. CD PROJEKT RED cautions that performance can fluctuate by scene and gameplay, and varies with system configuration, graphics settings and output resolution.
Rank #3
- Italian edition.
- Change one setting or setting group at a time.
- Test in a repeatable location and gameplay situation.
- Note the edition, resolution and whether upscaling or Frame Generation is enabled.
- Judge smoothness as well as a frame-rate reading; a single result is not a universal benchmark.
The official sources reviewed do not provide an independently attributable FPS gain for changing any individual Remastered graphics setting. Avoid treating console performance modes, 2015 graphics tests, or results from a different edition as Remastered PC benchmarks.
Does storage affect smoothness?
CD PROJEKT RED says an SSD is required to support the Remastered update’s latest technical enhancements, citing faster loading and smoother asset streaming. This requirement does not establish that NVMe is necessary, or that changing storage will fix a GPU-bound frame rate. If the game is installed on a drive that is not an SSD, check your PC’s compatibility before moving or reinstalling the game.
Quick Recap
A practical starting point
- Confirm that the installed game is Remastered and install current graphics drivers.
- Turn off ray tracing or path tracing, then test the same scene again.
- If performance remains inadequate, lower output resolution or enable an upscaler supported by your GPU.
- Reduce other quality settings gradually, using repeatable comparisons rather than changing every option at once.
- Check that the game is installed on an SSD if you need the Remastered technical enhancements and smoother asset streaming.
