If The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is running poorly on your PC, CD Projekt Red’s current advice is to disable NVIDIA HairWorks. The developer says HairWorks can significantly affect performance. Its October 1 hotfix, version 5.00c, reverted a change that caused performance and visual issues for some players, but the notes do not confirm that every HairWorks problem is fixed.
Why can HairWorks hurt PC performance?
HairWorks is NVIDIA’s hair-and-fur rendering system, not simply a setting for Geralt’s hairstyle. In its guide to the original 2015-era Witcher 3 implementation, NVIDIA describes tessellated strands with dynamic movement and shading. The feature was used for Geralt’s hair and beard, Roach, other horses, and many monsters.
CD Projekt Red’s support page says enabling HairWorks “may significantly impact game performance.” It does not specify a frame-rate loss, identify which PC configurations are affected, or say HairWorks is the cause of every performance problem in the remaster.
How to disable HairWorks
- Open The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on PC and go to its graphics settings.
- Find NVIDIA HairWorks and switch it off.
- Resume play and check performance on your own system. The developer does not promise a particular FPS improvement.
This is CD Projekt Red’s published workaround, rather than a guarantee that turning off the setting will resolve every performance issue. If a later update changes the developer’s guidance, follow the latest support instructions.

What hotfix 5.00c changes—and what it does not establish
CD Projekt Red released PC hotfix 5.00c on October 1, 2026, for Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and Xbox Play Anywhere (PC). The official notes say it “Reverted a change that caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users.” That is a targeted reversion, not confirmation of a universal fix. The support page continues to recommend disabling HairWorks until the issue is addressed in a future patch.
Install the latest version available for your PC platform. If performance trouble persists, use the HairWorks-off workaround. The hotfix also lists fixes and adjustments involving save/load, audio, Velen visuals, telemetry, GOG achievements, and launching the Classic 1.32 version; CD Projekt Red said it was continuing to investigate reported issues.

Does this apply to console versions?
This HairWorks guidance is specifically about the PC version. It should not be treated as a diagnosis or fix for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2. CD Projekt Red announced the remaster on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for eligible owners of the original game on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and for Nintendo Switch 2 owners of the original Switch game. It is also sold on Battle.net and Microsoft Store as an Xbox Play Anywhere title; see the release announcement for the stated availability.
