Choose The Witcher 3 if you want dark fantasy, monster contracts and a story led by Geralt. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you prefer a first-person science-fiction setting, a more customizable protagonist and combat built around hacking, weapons, stealth and implants. Neither is a universal winner; the right pick depends on the world and play style you want. One buying detail has changed: CD PROJEKT RED says The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launched on September 29, 2026, so check your platform’s edition and upgrade path before buying a listing labeled Complete Edition.
How the games differ
| Decision | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Cyberpunk 2077 |
|---|---|---|
| Setting and mood | Dark fantasy in the war-torn Northern Kingdoms. | A corporate-ruled future centered on Night City. |
| Player character | Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster slayer. | V, a hired gun whose appearance and background are customizable. |
| Story hook | Geralt searches for his adopted daughter, Ciri. | V tries to survive after an experimental prototype is implanted in their head. |
| Perspective and role-playing | A defined hero in a fantasy saga. | First-person presentation and a more player-shaped mercenary role. |
| Combat | Remastered brings updated combat and a reworked skill system. | Official material describes weapons, hacking, implants, stealth and direct combat as approaches. |
| Major expansions in the current edition | Remastered includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. | Ultimate Edition includes Phantom Liberty. |
That distinction is more useful than trying to name one game as objectively better. A 2026 GamesRadar comparison favors Cyberpunk as the more player-shaped role-playing experience while praising The Witcher 3’s writing and quest design; that is one critic’s interpretation, not a settled verdict. Official premises and edition details are described by CD PROJEKT RED, Cyberpunk 2077’s official site and GamesRadar.

Which one should you play first?
Choose The Witcher 3 for fantasy and a fixed central hero
Pick The Witcher 3 if you want to follow a known character through a dark fantasy story, take on monster contracts and explore the Northern Kingdoms. Its central relationship is Geralt’s search for Ciri, rather than a player-created identity.
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for science fiction and a more customizable role
Pick Cyberpunk 2077 if Night City’s corporate future appeals more than a fantasy world, and you want to shape V’s appearance and background while choosing between hacking, stealth and direct combat. The publisher’s 2018 introduction describes V as “a hired gun on the rise in Night City, the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future.”

If both premises appeal, use perspective and combat preference as the tiebreaker: Geralt’s fantasy saga and the updated combat in Remastered versus Cyberpunk’s first-person presentation and varied mercenary approaches. The available sources do not establish comparable completion times, so there is no sound hours-based reason to choose one first.
Which editions include the expansions?
The Witcher 3: check for Remastered, not just an older Complete Edition listing
CD PROJEKT RED announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launched September 29, 2026. The publisher describes it as a free upgrade for owners on qualifying platforms; on supported platforms, it replaces the Complete Edition. Remastered includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, plus visual and performance updates, improved combat, a reworked skill system and cross-platform mod support. Upgrade eligibility and process depend on platform, so verify the exact platform’s terms before buying or expecting an upgrade. The publisher has also announced a third expansion, Songs of the Past, for 2027. That is an announced schedule, not a guaranteed release, and it is not one of the two expansions listed as included with Remastered.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition includes Phantom Liberty
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition bundles the base game, Phantom Liberty and the free updates identified by the publisher. CD PROJEKT RED announced digital availability worldwide and physical availability in selected markets for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Physical stock is therefore market-dependent; check the live regional listing for platform and included expansion before purchase. Phantom Liberty requires Cyberpunk 2077 and is described on the official Cyberpunk site as a spy-thriller adventure in Dogtown. Edition details are in the publisher’s Ultimate Edition announcement.

What to check before buying
- For The Witcher 3, look for Remastered on a supported platform. If you already own the game, confirm whether that platform qualifies for the free upgrade rather than assuming every Complete Edition copy transfers the same way.
- For Cyberpunk 2077, choose Ultimate Edition if you want the base game and Phantom Liberty together; if buying a physical copy, verify the live regional listing and format.
- Compare current prices only in the store and region where you intend to buy. Prices and stock change, and a reliable current price comparison is not established here.
CD PROJEKT RED reported more than 250 Game of the Year awards and more than 65 million copies sold worldwide for The Witcher 3 in 2026. Those are publisher-reported figures, not a measure of whether it will suit an individual player; see the publisher’s anniversary announcement.
