The Complete Edition contains the full base campaign plus the two major paid expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. It is a content bundle, not a wholly separate game.
Which PC edition should you buy?
Standard Edition
- Choose it if you only want the base campaign.
- It can still receive the PC next-generation features where your copy is eligible; the Complete Edition is not required solely for the technical update.
- It makes sense when the base game is heavily discounted, or when you already own both expansions separately.
Complete Edition
- Best for a first playthrough and anyone who wants the complete story in one purchase.
- Includes the base game, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
- Usually provides the simplest all-in-one installation and avoids managing separate expansion licenses.
GOTY and Complete Edition names
Storefront terminology is inconsistent. GOG’s product URL still uses “Game of the Year Edition,” while newer CDPR materials use “Complete Edition.” Confirm the product description lists both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine instead of relying only on the title.

Steam
Buy or redeem the game on the official Steam page and install it from your Steam Library. Steam provides file verification, a CLASSIC beta branch for reverting to the earlier build, and Workshop support for compatible mods.
GOG.com
GOG identifies its release as DRM-free and supplies an offline installer. GOG Galaxy is optional for the Complete Edition; Galaxy adds optional cloud-save and achievement synchronization. You can use Galaxy or download the installers directly from your GOG account.
Epic Games Store
The game is officially distributed through Epic. Epic provides the latest available version, but CDPR’s rollback guidance states that earlier builds are not offered there. This matters if you depend on older mods.
Use the storefront where you purchased the license. Do not use “free download” pages, torrents, cracked copies or unauthorized key sellers.

How to install it safely
- Choose an official storefront and sign in to the account that will own the license.
- Buy the Standard or Complete Edition.
- Install the storefront client if required, then select Install in your library.
- Choose a drive with enough free space for the current installation and future patches.
- Let the client finish the game update and downloadable-content installation.
- Launch once with no mods installed.
- Create a manual save and configure controls and graphics.
- Only then add mods, one at a time.
GOG’s offline installer is useful when you do not want Galaxy running, but downloading the installer, updates and optional content still requires internet access at some stage. Keep extra free space available: the current published table lists 50GB, while CDPR’s future minimum specifies 70GB on an SSD.
Windows PC system requirements
CDPR’s current next-generation requirements page still shows Windows 7/8 rows for the lowest configurations, but official support for those operating systems ended on May 21, 2024. Treat those rows as legacy information, not a promise of supported Windows 7 or Windows 8 play.

Announced future minimum
CDPR says a future update connected with new content and Songs of the Past will change the minimum configuration. The change begins with that next update; do not treat it as the already-effective requirement unless the update has launched.

See CDPR’s announcement. If you are upgrading a PC specifically for long-term Witcher 3 use, plan around Windows 11 and an SSD rather than the older HDD-era table. Windows 10 remains in the currently published high and ultra rows, but CDPR says it will not be supported for the future minimum.
PC and next-generation features
The update adds or improves visual quality, foliage and textures, screen-space reflections and supported ray tracing. It also includes DLSS and FSR support, alternative camera options, Quick Sign Casting, map filtering, a dynamically hideable minimap, Photo Mode, integrated community mods, quest fixes, Netflix-inspired cosmetic content and an additional quest. Cross-progression can move saves between supported platforms where the feature is available.
Ray tracing is optional and can impose a substantial performance cost. It is not required to play. DirectX 12 is needed for the advanced next-generation feature set, while DirectX 11 can be a useful troubleshooting or performance option where your installation offers it. Do not assume a particular frame rate without testing the exact CPU, GPU, resolution and preset.
A sensible graphics-tuning method
- Start with the game’s recommended preset.
- Test in a busy outdoor area, not only a quiet interior.
- If frame pacing is poor, disable ray tracing first.
- At 1440p or 4K, try DLSS or FSR and compare its quality modes at your resolution.
- Lower foliage distance and shadow quality before heavily reducing texture quality.
- Use resolution as the broadest image-quality/performance control.
- Treat HairWorks as optional because it is demanding.
- Restart the game after major graphics-API or ray-tracing changes when the build requests it.
Beginner tips that remain useful
Build for your play style
Invest early in a preferred combat style and one or two Signs. Add alchemy if you intend to use potions, oils and bombs regularly, and prioritize general survivability before a highly specialized late-game build. There is no single best build for every difficulty, expansion or player.

Use Witcher Senses
Witcher Senses are central to tracking monsters, examining crime scenes, finding quest objects, locating hidden items and following investigation clues.
Prepare for contracts
Read a contract before fighting. Identify the monster, apply the appropriate oil, select useful Signs, carry a relevant bomb or potion and replenish consumables when appropriate. Preparation matters more on higher difficulties.
Follow side quests and suggested levels
Side quests develop characters, factions and consequences that give the main plot context. Follow suggested quest levels instead of mechanically clearing every map marker before advancing the story.
Keep crafting materials
Do not sell every monster part, alchemical ingredient, rare crafting material or relic. Sell redundant weapons and armor only after checking whether dismantling them produces a valuable component.
Try Gwent early if it interests you
Gwent is optional but can become a substantial side activity. Buy or win cards when practical, and do not assume every merchant carries the same inventory.
Maintain rotating manual saves
Keep several manual saves before major story decisions, romance-related choices, large faction quests, expansion entry points, high-value gambling or tournament activities, mod changes and major updates.
Mods, REDkit and Workshop
The Witcher 3 REDkit is a free PC tool for owners on Steam, GOG.com or Epic Games Store. It is designed for creating and editing substantial game content. Players can also use Nexus Mods, Steam Workshop and REDkit-created projects. CDPR’s modding-support update adds Steam Workshop one-click subscriptions and support for DLC-style mods.
- Launch the unmodified game and create a test save.
- Install one mod at a time.
- Check each mod’s required game version and dependencies.
- Back up saves before adding an overhaul or script-heavy project.
- Keep a written list of installed mods.
- Disable or remove mods before diagnosing crashes.
Visual and convenience mods are generally easier to isolate than large quest, world or script overhauls. A patch can break script mergers, frameworks, UI changes, texture or bundle mods, and major quest projects. Classic, current DirectX 12 and future builds are not automatically compatible.

Save files and a clean installation
Windows saves are stored at:

Cloud synchronization can restore an unwanted or damaged state, so make a local backup before changing versions, uninstalling or reinstalling mods.
- Back up the
gamesavesfolder. - Disable cloud saves.
- Uninstall the game through the client.
- Remove the game folder from the relevant client directory.
- Remove the local The Witcher 3 folder under
%userprofile%Documents. - Restart the PC.
- Reinstall without mods.
- Launch and test the clean installation.
- Copy backed-up saves back only after the clean install works.
- Re-enable cloud saves if desired.

Rolling back to the Classic build
Steam
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and choose Properties.
- Open Betas.
- Select CLASSIC.
Return to the current build by selecting None in the same menu.
GOG Galaxy
- Open Installed and select the game.
- Choose Manage Installation → Configure.
- Set Beta Channels to Classic.
- Disable automatic updates and select the desired version.
Set Beta Channels to Disabled to return to the newest version.

According to CDPR’s rollback guidance, Epic does not provide earlier builds. CDPR fully supports only the latest version; Classic can help with older mod compatibility but lacks later fixes, features and improvements.
Troubleshooting launch, saves and updates
The game will not launch
- Restart the PC.
- Update the graphics driver.
- Verify or repair files in your storefront client.
- Temporarily remove every mod.
- Try the other available graphics API.
- Disable overlays.
- Check whether antivirus software or Windows permissions blocked files.
- Test a clean installation.
- If contacting support, generate a DxDiag report.
CDPR’s PC support hub has separate guidance for launch failures, crashes, verification, performance and saves.
A save is missing or DLC appears missing
- Stop overwriting saves and check your local backup.
- Confirm you are signed into the account that owns the game and expansions.
- Check that the installed edition and game version match the save.
- Consider cloud-save conflicts, mod-created dependencies and an incorrect local save folder.
- Test the save on an unmodded installation.
Mods stopped working after an update
- Disable all mods and launch the official build.
- Confirm the save loads.
- Read each mod’s compatibility notes and required version.
- Reinstall only updated mods, one at a time.
- If you have a legitimate compatibility reason, use Steam or GOG’s Classic branch.
Is The Witcher 3 still worth buying on PC?
