AMD Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition 17.2.1 is a genuine legacy Radeon driver released on February 22, 2017. AMD still lists it in product-specific Previous Drivers archives, but it is not a current driver. Download it only when you need to reproduce an older Windows 7/8.1/10 setup, support a legacy game, or test a known-good configuration. Radeon RX 400-series users on Windows 10 should note a documented blank- or white-screen problem before installing.
Quick download guidance
Use AMD’s Support site and select your exact graphics product, then open Previous Drivers. Locate Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition 17.2.1 and choose the Windows edition and architecture shown for that product page. Do not use a generic installer simply because its filename contains 17.2.1.
Legacy warning: This February 2017 package is not a recommendation for current Radeon hardware, Windows 11, or users seeking the latest fixes and game support.
Archived examples include a Windows 8.1 64-bit installer and a Windows 10 32-bit installer. These are examples from AMD’s archive, not universal downloads for every Radeon model.

What 17.2.1 is
AMD Radeon Software was the graphics driver and control-panel suite. Crimson ReLive Edition was AMD’s branding at the time, while 17.2.1 identifies the 2017 release branch and revision. It predates Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition and is not interchangeable with later Crimson ReLive releases such as 17.3.x or 17.7.2.
AMD’s archived product pages give the release date as February 22, 2017. Archive listings and old release-note links can change; some historical links now redirect to AMD’s general driver pages even though the product archive still identifies 17.2.1.
Who should use it?
- A user whose older game or software documentation specifically requires 17.2.1.
- Someone preserving or restoring a Windows 7/8.1/10 gaming image.
- A troubleshooter reproducing a legacy configuration or testing a regression after confirming that the exact hardware worked with this package.
Prefer a newer supported driver when you need ordinary gaming, current operating-system support, later bug fixes, or improved security and stability. Do not install 17.2.1 merely because it appears in a search result.

Supported hardware and Windows versions
AMD lists 17.2.1 on individual archive pages for multiple product families, including examples in the Radeon HD 7000, Radeon R7/R9, and Radeon RX 400/500 ranges. That does not establish a universal compatibility list. Mobile GPUs, integrated Radeon graphics, switchable-graphics laptops, and OEM variants can require a different package.
| Hardware or situation | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Radeon HD 7000 desktop products | Open the exact model page, such as AMD’s Radeon HD 7870 archive, and confirm that 17.2.1 is listed. |
| Radeon R7/R9 products | Use the exact AMD product selector; family-level assumptions are insufficient. |
| Radeon RX 400/500 products | Check the model-specific archive, such as the Radeon RX 580 page. |
| Laptop, integrated, or OEM Radeon | Prefer the computer manufacturer’s customized driver unless AMD explicitly lists the package for that device. |
The era’s packages covered Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10, with 32-bit and 64-bit variants where AMD provided them. The installer must match both your operating-system architecture and the selected GPU page. AMD archive package sizes differ by product and variant; examples include approximately 380 MB on an RX 580 page and 421 MB on an HD 7870 page.
Identify the exact GPU first
- Press Windows + X, choose Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and record the complete AMD model name.
- Alternatively, press Windows + R, enter
dxdiag, and read the GPU name on the Display or Render tab. - If the existing Radeon software opens, right-click the desktop, choose AMD Radeon Settings, then inspect System or Software. Labels vary by Crimson build, so Device Manager is the most consistent method.
What changed in 17.2.1?
The release targeted For Honor and Sniper Elite 4, adding DirectX 11 multi-GPU profiles for both games. AMD Performance Labs reported the following comparisons with Crimson ReLive 17.1.2:
Rank #3

| Game | AMD-reported result | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| For Honor | Up to 4% faster | Radeon RX 480 8GB; 1920×1080; compared with 17.1.2. |
| Sniper Elite 4 | Up to 5% faster | Radeon RX 480 8GB; 2560×1440; compared with 17.1.2. |
These are AMD’s own test results, not a guarantee for every Radeon card, setting, operating system, or game build. Multi-GPU profiles matter only to systems that actually use a supported multi-GPU arrangement.
Known issue: RX 400 and Windows 10 display failure
Square Enix warned of a possible blank or white screen on Radeon RX 400-series cards running Windows 10 with Crimson ReLive 17.2.1 and advised affected users to move to a later Crimson ReLive driver. The warning does not mean every RX 400 card will fail, but it is a strong reason not to choose 17.2.1 for a new Windows 10 installation when a later compatible driver is available.
More generally, an old installer can behave differently after years of Windows updates, security changes, overlays, and monitoring software. The release was designed for the Windows versions of its era; it should not be treated as Windows 11 support.

Safe download and installation procedure
- Create a restore point or make a system backup.
- Download the installer before removing your current driver. Close games, browsers, overlays, recording tools, and hardware-monitoring utilities.
- If Windows Update repeatedly replaces graphics drivers, temporarily disconnect the internet during removal, installation, and the first reboot.
- Run the AMD installer as administrator. Use the normal installation path unless this particular legacy package presents an appropriate clean-install option; do not assume it has every modern factory-reset feature.
- Restart when prompted.
- Reconnect the internet after confirming that the intended driver is installed.
- Test the game or application that motivated the rollback, then keep the installer with a note of the working GPU, Windows build, and driver version.
AMD’s current support resources for installation, uninstalling, and the AMD Cleanup Utility are linked from its 17.2.1 support page. Archived packages commonly use whql in their filenames, but check certification and package details against the exact installer listed for your product rather than assuming every variant has identical metadata.
Troubleshooting failed installs and rollbacks
Wrong operating system or architecture
An incompatible installer may refuse to run, report that the driver is unsupported, or leave the adapter as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Recheck the Windows edition and 32-bit/64-bit architecture, return to the exact GPU page, and never force a package intended for another Radeon family.
Windows replaces the driver
If a newer or generic driver appears after reboot, repeat the installation with the internet disconnected, inspect Device Manager before reconnecting, and verify the driver version in Device Manager or Radeon Settings.

- Chipset: AMD RX 9070 XT
- Memory: 16 GB GDDR6
- XFX SWFT Triple Fan Cooling Solution
- Boost Clock Up to 2970 MHz
Existing AMD software conflicts
Uninstall the current AMD graphics software through Apps & Features or Programs and Features, reboot, and retry. If normal removal fails, create a restore point and use AMD’s official cleanup utility or a reputable display-driver removal tool. The system may temporarily use Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and require another reboot.
Black screen after installation
- Wait several minutes in case Windows is completing setup.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver.
- Use Safe Mode if the desktop remains inaccessible.
- Roll back through Device Manager, use System Restore, or reinstall the previously working package.
- For an RX 400 card on Windows 10, replace 17.2.1 with a later Crimson ReLive release if the blank/white-screen symptom appears.
17.2.1 or a newer driver?
| Situation | Recommended choice |
|---|---|
| Current Radeon GPU or Windows 11 | Use the current AMD-supported driver. |
| Older game explicitly tested with 17.2.1 | Try 17.2.1 only when the exact GPU and Windows version match. |
| General gaming on Windows 10 | Prefer the newest compatible legacy driver unless testing proves 17.2.1 is required. |
| RX 400 plus Windows 10 blank/white screen | Avoid 17.2.1 and move to a later compatible release. |
| Restoring an old system image | Match the original driver version. |
| Regression after a recent update | Test 17.2.1 only after confirming product compatibility and keeping a rollback path. |
| Mobile or OEM Radeon laptop | Prefer the laptop manufacturer’s driver unless AMD explicitly lists its package. |
Bottom line
Crimson ReLive 17.2.1 remains useful as a precisely matched archival driver, especially for reproducing a 2017 game setup or diagnosing a known regression. Download it from AMD’s product-specific archive, verify the GPU and Windows architecture, and keep a restore path. For current systems and ordinary gaming, choose a newer supported driver instead.
