What is The Witcher IV?
CD PROJEKT RED revealed The Witcher IV at The Game Awards on December 13, 2024. Previously known by its codename, Polaris, the project is the first game in a new Witcher saga and follows The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The studio describes it as a single-player, open-world RPG, with Ciri as the player character. CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement calls Ciri “the heart of the story.”
The game is being developed using customized Unreal Engine 5 technology. That confirms the engine, but does not establish the final platform list or hardware requirements.
When is The Witcher 4 coming out?
CD PROJEKT RED’s 2026 company update gives The Witcher IV a planned 2028 release window. This is a target window, not a specific launch date; no day or month is stated. The company’s 2026 update also sets out its planned sequence of major Witcher-universe releases: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered in 2026, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past in 2027, and The Witcher IV in 2028. CD PROJEKT RED describes its goal as one large Witcher-themed release each year through the planned launch of the new game.

Is Ciri the main character?
Yes. CD PROJEKT RED identifies Ciri as the player character. The studio says the game will follow her on her Path and explore “what it means to truly become a witcher.” The announcement establishes the protagonist and broad framing, but does not give a full account of the game’s plot.
What does the reveal trailer show?
The reveal depicts Ciri taking a witcher contract in a remote village troubled by a monster and a tradition of ritual sacrifice. CD PROJEKT RED presents this as a short, self-contained Witcher story, not a synopsis of the full game. The trailer also introduces elements of Ciri’s abilities and equipment, including a chain and advanced magic powers.

Importantly, the trailer is pre-rendered, not real-time gameplay. The studio says it was created with a custom Unreal Engine 5 build on an unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU, using assets and models from the game. It offers a cinematic look at the intended experience, but it does not demonstrate how the game plays or performs on final hardware.
What did the 2025 technology demo show?
At Unreal Fest in June 2025, CD PROJEKT RED and Epic presented a technology demonstration featuring Kovir, a region the studio has confirmed for The Witcher IV. CD PROJEKT RED explicitly said the demo “wasn’t gameplay of The Witcher 4 itself”; it showcased technology being used to create the game. The studio described the live presentation as a way to show it was “creating real technology with Epic.”

The demo demonstrates technology, not the complete gameplay, final graphics, or final feature set of The Witcher IV. In short, the reveal trailer offers a glimpse of story and tone, while the Unreal Fest demo focuses on technology. Neither is released gameplay footage.

The official material cited here does not confirm a specific launch date, platforms, price, preorder date, edition lineup, or final technical requirements. Those details may be announced later; they should not be inferred from either the cinematic trailer or the technology demo. How big is the Witcher series?
CD PROJEKT RED reported in 2026 that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had sold over 65 million copies and that the Witcher series had sold more than 90 million copies globally. These are company-reported figures, not independently stated totals.
