The Witcher 4’s map is expected to be broadly comparable in size to The Witcher 3’s, but its exact area has not been announced. In December 2024, game director Sebastian Kalemba described both map size and quest count as “more or less” the same. The studio has since shown Ciri traveling through Kovir in a technology demo, but that showcase is not gameplay and does not confirm the final map or travel systems.
How big is The Witcher 4’s map?
The best available comparison is to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Kalemba said the new game’s map would be “more or less” similar in size. He did not give a precise percentage, and the remark is an expectation rather than a measured or final map specification. TechRadar reported the comments on December 19, 2024.
No official area in square miles or square kilometers has been announced in the sources available. Third-party area estimates should not be treated as confirmed developer figures.
Will the map be bigger than The Witcher 3?
There is no confirmation that it will be bigger. Kalemba’s “more or less” comparison points to a broadly similar scale, not a promise that the maps will match exactly or that The Witcher 4 will be larger. He also said the team could not yet specify whether it would be 90%, 85%, or 100% of The Witcher 3’s size.

- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
Kalemba made the same approximate comparison about quest quantity. He emphasized building a compelling experience and “quality over quantity,” rather than setting a precise quest-count target. Neither the map comparison nor the quest comparison establishes final content totals.
Which regions can you explore?
Kovir is the clearest confirmed new setting. CD PROJEKT RED’s June 3, 2025 technology demo follows Ciri and her horse, Kelpie, through rugged mountains and dense forests toward Valdrest, a trading port. The studio describes Kovir as a region appearing in the video-game series for the first time. Read the studio’s announcement of the demo.

Game director Sebastian Kalemba described Kovir as “a rugged land where cities are built on trade and keep a careful distance from the military conflicts that plague the rest of the north.” The imagery and description provide a sense of the setting, but they do not establish a complete region list, map boundaries, or how much of Kovir will be playable. Kalemba’s PlayStation Blog post explains the showcase.
What does the technology demo reveal about exploration?
The demo shows the kind of terrain and environmental detail CD PROJEKT RED is developing, and the studio discusses technology such as Nanite Foliage and FastGeo Streaming, which loads geometry. It is evidence of technical work and worldbuilding—not a map tour or a demonstration of the final exploration loop.

Kalemba explicitly cautioned that the showcase “isn’t gameplay of The Witcher 4.” As a result, it does not prove that every location shown will be accessible, establish final NPC density, or show how exploration will work throughout the released game. The director’s post sets out that distinction.

No confirmed fast-travel system, travel-time estimate, final mount controls, or other finished traversal mechanics have been announced in the sources reviewed. Ciri riding Kelpie in the technology demo is not confirmation of how mounts or travel will work in the game.
The larger worldbuilding effort is one area the studio has discussed: in an April 3, 2025 podcast, Environment Art Director Michał Janiszewski described how teams work to make each region feel believable, down to the placement of tree lines. That speaks to environmental design, not to the map’s final size or travel rules. Listen to or read the studio’s worldbuilding podcast page.
