The Witcher 4 UE5 Tech Demo: What CDPR Showed on PS5

The Witcher 4’s early UE5 showcase was reported to run at 60 fps on PS5, but it was a technology demo, not a performance test of the finished game.

CD PROJEKT RED and Epic Games said their early Witcher 4 technology demo ran at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5. That is a claim about a showcase—not a benchmark of the finished game, and not confirmation that The Witcher 4 will run at 60 fps when released. The official material identifies the console only as PlayStation 5; it does not specify a hardware SKU or publish independent performance measurements.

Did the demo really run at 60 fps on PS5?

According to CD PROJEKT RED and Epic Games, yes: the technology demo ran at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5. Epic also described the showcase as running with ray tracing. These are company-reported details, not independently verified test results: the official coverage reviewed here provides no frame-time data, benchmark methodology, or independent measurement. CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement and Epic’s State of Unreal coverage concern the demo specifically.

The sources name PlayStation 5 but do not identify a particular hardware SKU. So “base PS5” should not be read as a separately tested console configuration. The published figure is the partners’ description of their showcase, not a result that establishes how a retail game performs.

Was this actual Witcher 4 gameplay?

No. CD PROJEKT RED calls the presentation an early-development technology demo and explicitly distinguishes it from gameplay of The Witcher 4 itself. The footage uses the game’s world and characters to demonstrate technology, but it is not proof that the finished game will look or behave exactly this way.

The showcase, presented by CD PROJEKT RED and Epic at State of Unreal on June 3, 2025, follows Ciri and her horse Kelpie through Kovir toward the city of Valdrest. CD PROJEKT RED says Kovir will make its first appearance in the video-game series in The Witcher 4. The official announcement provides the setting and the demo’s status.

What Unreal Engine technology did the showcase highlight?

The demonstration was presented as an early look at open-world work using Unreal Engine 5. Its systems illustrate the kinds of problems the team is addressing; their appearance in a tech demo does not guarantee that every feature will ship in the final game.

  • Fast Geometry Streaming: PlayStation Blog describes a lightweight way to register and unregister assets while loading static geometry. Game Director Sebastian Kalemba said seamless loading is doing its job when players do not notice it.
  • Nanite Foliage: The showcase used dense, detailed vegetation, including individual branches moving in the wind. Epic described the technology as fast and memory-efficient. In its June 3, 2025 coverage, Epic said Nanite Foliage was slated for Unreal Engine 5.7; that was a release plan stated at the time, not a claim about its current availability.
  • Unreal Animation Framework: PlayStation Blog described support for blending, state machines, procedural animation workflows, and interactions between complex characters.
  • Mass Framework: The crowd example showed simulated people and AI behavior reacting to a collision, with the initial incident causing a chain of reactions in a market.
  • ML Deformer: The system was shown approximating complex character deformation efficiently, including the movement of Kelpie’s muscles.
  • MetaHuman technology: MetaHuman was among the technologies discussed for the demonstration; the cited coverage does not establish a complete final-game implementation.

These descriptions come from PlayStation Blog’s account of the demo and Epic’s event coverage. They explain what was shown or discussed, not a final feature list.

Does this mean The Witcher 4 will run at 60 fps?

No conclusion about the released game’s frame rate follows from the demo claim. CD PROJEKT RED’s joint CEO Michał Nowakowski called the 60 fps showcase a milestone, while also saying development was far from finished. The statement describes work in progress, not a performance specification or promise for the retail game.

Neither the official demo coverage nor the cited company announcement supplies final-game targets, graphics modes, resolution, or a shipping date tied to a performance commitment. The footage therefore cannot establish whether the eventual game will offer a 60 fps mode on PS5, or what visual settings such a mode might use.

What the demo does—and does not—establish

Question What the official material supports
Platform and frame rate CD PROJEKT RED and Epic report that the technology demo ran at 60 fps on PlayStation 5; this is not an independent benchmark.
Hardware configuration The sources name PlayStation 5 but do not specify a hardware SKU or testing methodology.
Nature of the footage An early technology showcase in The Witcher 4’s world, not gameplay of the finished game.
Final-game performance Not established by the demo coverage.
Technology in the finished game The named systems were shown or discussed for the demo; their complete final-game implementation is not guaranteed.

The most accurate takeaway is narrow but meaningful: the developers and engine partner say they reached 60 fps in an early open-world technology showcase on PS5. The footage demonstrates a technical milestone and a glimpse of Kovir, not a verified performance forecast for The Witcher 4.
