Is Ciri the main character in The Witcher IV?
Yes. CD PROJEKT RED says players will take on the role of Ciri, Geralt of Rivia’s adopted daughter. The official game page describes her as setting out on her own journey to become a professional monster slayer. The reveal establishes that the saga centers on her, but does not explain the precise process by which she became a witcher or spell out how her abilities work.
The game follows The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, shifting the protagonist focus from Geralt to Ciri. Playing the earlier game is an optional way to catch up, not a stated prerequisite. In an interview published by Xbox Wire on December 18, 2024, narrative director Philipp Weber said the story takes place “a few years” after The Witcher 3 and that the team intended to handle that game’s multiple endings. What happens in the reveal trailer?
The cinematic follows Ciri as she takes a witcher contract in an isolated village terrorized for generations by a monster that demands human sacrifice. Villagers are preparing a young woman for a traditional ritual. Ciri tries to kill the beast and save her, putting herself at odds with the community’s prejudice and superstition.
CD PROJEKT RED presents the sequence as a short, self-contained Witcher story that previews some of Ciri’s tools and abilities, including a chain and advanced magic. Was The Witcher IV trailer gameplay?
No. CD PROJEKT RED says the reveal was a pre-rendered cinematic produced in a custom Unreal Engine 5 build on an unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU. It used assets and models from the game, and was intended to show the experience the team aspired to deliver. That makes it a cinematic reveal made with game assets, not a demonstration of gameplay or real-time performance.
