The finale never confirms whether Bigby’s last encounter is with Faith or Nerissa. Its strongest clue is that “You’re not as bad as everyone says you are” is spoken by both Faith and Nerissa. That echo suggests they may have used glamours to appear as one another, but the game leaves the identities and timeline unresolved.
What does Bigby realize at the end?
After confronting the Crooked Man, Bigby speaks with Nerissa. She tells him, “You’re not as bad as everyone says you are”—the same line Faith used at the end of their conversation in the opening episode.

That repetition prompts a montage of remembered conversations. Bigby appears to suspect that the woman he knew as Faith and the woman he knows as Nerissa are connected. The game then lets you choose whether to follow Nerissa or let her go; it does not show what Bigby discovers, or confirm who she is.
The repeated line and the possibility of a glamour-based identity swap are clues the game puts in front of the player. The exact swap and when it happened are reconstructions, not established story facts.

Why are Faith and Nerissa’s identities in question?
Fables can use glamours to change their appearance, making it possible for one woman to look like the other. The opening’s apparent murder, the examination of the body, and the Magic Mirror’s inability to locate Faith all figure in fan arguments about the mystery. None settles it: the clues can be interpreted in more than one way, and the body examination has alternative explanations.
The two leading readings reverse the direction of the possible disguise. One says Faith became Nerissa; the other says Nerissa became Faith. Both require important events to have happened off-screen.

The two leading interpretations
1. The final Nerissa is Faith
In this theory, Faith survived the opening events and later used a glamour to look like Nerissa. Nerissa, meanwhile, died during the opening sequence, and the body identified as Faith was actually Nerissa under a glamour.
Supporters point to the body examination and the Magic Mirror’s failure to find Faith, but neither proves this chain of events. The theory also draws thematic weight from Faith’s Donkeyskin story, in which disguise helps its heroine escape. That makes the reading resonant, not confirmed.

2. The opening Faith is Nerissa
Here, Faith was already dead when the story began. Nerissa used a glamour to appear as Faith during Bigby’s opening encounter, encouraging him to investigate the apparent murder. At the end, the repeated line signals that Nerissa was also the woman he met at the start.
This reading makes the echo a relatively direct reveal: Nerissa is identifying herself as the person behind the opening encounter. GamesBeat argues that this fits the line more straightforwardly than the first theory, since a Faith trying to disappear might have less reason to disclose a hidden identity. That is an argument about narrative logic, not a canonical answer.

How the theories compare
| Question | Faith is the final Nerissa | Nerissa was the opening Faith |
|---|---|---|
| Who was Bigby speaking to at the end? | Faith, disguised as Nerissa. | Nerissa, no longer presenting herself as Faith. |
| Who appeared as whom at the start? | Nerissa’s body appeared to be Faith’s. | Nerissa appeared to Bigby as Faith. |
| What does the repeated line do? | It tips Bigby off that Faith and Nerissa are connected. | It lets Nerissa identify herself as the person from the opening. |
| What remains unproved? | The identity of the body, Faith’s survival, and the timing of the disguise. | Faith’s death before the game, Nerissa’s opening disguise, and her reason for the deception. |
These are interpretive comparisons, not questions the game resolves. Each theory supplies a different off-screen timeline; neither is confirmed by the finale.

GamesBeat also points to a forum theory involving Bloody Mary, but describes it as receiving little support. A long Telltale forum post offers more elaborate claims, including that Faith and Nerissa masterminded the plot. These are fringe community speculations, not developer-confirmed explanations, and they are less well supported than the two identity readings above.

Did Telltale confirm which theory is true?
No. In an interview published August 23, 2017, Telltale’s then-head of creative communications, Job Stauffer, called it “an ambiguous ending that’s left open to interpretation.” He said the noir-style finale leaves what happened “largely in the eyes of the player to decide.” He also described the choice not to follow the scene with an explanation as intentional: the ending was something to leave players talking about.
GamesBeat reported on July 24, 2014, that it contacted Telltale for clarification and received none. Stauffer’s later comments explain the creative intent, but do not choose between the two readings. He also said a planned second season would focus on Bigby and Snow White rather than continue the identity thread, so the interview offers no promise that a sequel will resolve it.
Where to revisit the story
Telltale describes The Wolf Among Us as based on Bill Willingham’s Fables comic series and lists access to all five game episodes. Its official page also lists The Wolf Among Us Remastered for PC and consoles with an October 29, 2026 release date. As of October 8, 2026, that stated release date is still in the future; check the page for current platform and availability details.
