The Xbox-branded handheld reported in March 2025 became the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally family, which launched on October 16, 2025. The separate 2027 console story now has an official name—Project Helix—but Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date: 2027 is when developer alpha hardware is expected, alongside a qualified launch target.
What happened to the reported Xbox handheld?
In March 2025, Windows Central reported that Microsoft was preparing an Xbox-branded handheld for later that year. The report called the project “Kennan” (correcting an earlier spelling, “Keenan”) and described a Windows-based device with Xbox controls, PC Game Pass and likely access to other PC storefronts. Microsoft later announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X with ASUS; the pair launched on October 16, 2025.
The report was substantially right about a partner-made handheld, but the result is a Windows gaming handheld, not a traditional Xbox console in portable form. Its Xbox identity comes through its hardware design and Xbox software and services, while its Windows foundation makes it part of the broader PC gaming ecosystem.
ROG Xbox Ally vs. Ally X: what changes?
The Ally X is the higher-spec option, with a stronger processor tier, more memory and storage, and a larger battery. Both launch models have a 7-inch 1080p, 120Hz display.

Can the Xbox Ally play Game Pass and PC games?
Yes, with the important qualification that compatibility and the way a game runs depend on the individual title. The original Windows Central report described PC Game Pass and likely access to other PC storefronts. The Xbox Ally is Windows-based, so it belongs to the PC gaming category rather than being limited to a console-only library.

Xbox Play Anywhere provides another way to carry supported games between devices: eligible purchases, progress and achievements can carry across supported Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and handhelds. Microsoft said the catalog included more than 1,000 games in its August 2025 Ally announcement. In 2026, Xbox described the catalog as having more than 1,500 games, with 500 development teams having shipped Play Anywhere titles. Those figures describe the catalog at the time of each announcement, not a guarantee that every game works identically on every device.
What is Project Helix, and is the next Xbox launching in 2027?
Project Helix is Microsoft’s official name for its next-generation first-party Xbox console. Xbox VP Jason Ronald said the console is in development and is powered by a custom AMD SoC, co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. Microsoft has also described the system as supporting Xbox and PC games and backward compatibility, though it has not published final retail specifications or a detailed compatibility list.

The 2027 date needs careful reading. Ronald said Xbox plans to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Separately, AMD CEO Lisa Su was quoted in Tom’s Hardware’s report on AMD’s Q4 2025 earnings call as saying development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox with an AMD semi-custom SoC was progressing well “to support a launch in 2027.” That supports a target, not a confirmed date for consumers to buy a console.

| Games | Xbox and PC games, plus backward compatibility, are part of the stated plan | A complete compatibility list or technical details |
| Timing | Developer alpha hardware is planned to begin shipping in 2027; AMD’s CEO described 2027 as a launch target | A firm consumer release date or confirmation that retail launch will occur in 2027 |

How the handheld and console fit together
Xbox is presenting Play Anywhere as one bridge across its console, PC and handheld devices: for supported titles, players can carry eligible purchases, progress and achievements between them. In 2026, Xbox said more than 5,000 developers were building for Xbox. That figure indicates the breadth of development activity, but it does not mean every game will be available on every device or support Play Anywhere.
