The leak was genuine, but the headline needed an important correction. Images published through an FCC filing on May 7, 2025 showed an Xbox-branded handheld developed with ASUS under the codename Project Kennan. It was not a Microsoft-built portable Xbox console in the traditional sense. Microsoft and ASUS later announced the device as the ROG Xbox Ally, alongside the more powerful ROG Xbox Ally X.
Both launched worldwide on October 16, 2025. They are Windows 11 gaming PCs with Xbox controls, Xbox software integration, PC storefront access, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play—not portable Xbox Series X|S hardware.

What the May 2025 leak actually showed
The leaked photographs came from an official FCC certification filing connected with ASUS handheld hardware. Two devices appeared: a white ASUS-branded model believed to be the next ROG Ally generation, and a black model carrying Xbox branding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe black unit had the overall shape of an ASUS ROG Ally-style handheld, but with Xbox-specific details including an Xbox button, revised grips, and a control layout designed to resemble an Xbox controller. The images showed physical hardware rather than a retailer listing, concept render, or anonymous rumor.

That made the leak credible, but an FCC filing has limits. It can show that hardware existed in certification or testing, yet it does not independently confirm the final commercial name, retail price, release date, complete specifications, or whether the shipping product will be identical. Windows Central’s report and Nintendo Life’s coverage both treated the filing as evidence of an Xbox-influenced ASUS handheld, not proof of a finished first-party Microsoft console.
Why the images disappointed some Xbox fans
Many readers were expecting a compact Xbox equivalent to a Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch: a bespoke Microsoft console with a dedicated operating system, console-style simplicity, and perhaps access to Xbox games without the compromises of Windows.
The photographs suggested something different. There was no visible evidence of detachable controllers, a cartridge slot, or a closed Xbox operating system. The design looked much closer to an ASUS gaming PC than to a new Xbox console. That is why contemporary reactions described it as not being the portable Xbox some fans had hoped for. TechRadar and T3 captured that expectation gap.

Microsoft was pursuing a different strategy: put an Xbox-focused experience on partner-made Windows hardware rather than immediately build a proprietary portable Xbox.
What Project Kennan meant
Project Kennan was the reported pre-announcement codename for the Xbox-branded ASUS handheld. It was not the final retail name. Microsoft and ASUS officially revealed the products on June 8, 2025 as the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.
That distinction matters because “Xbox handheld” can mean two different things:
- An Xbox-branded partner device: ASUS manufactures the hardware, while Microsoft supplies the Xbox interface, ecosystem integration, and software features.
- A first-party Xbox console: Microsoft designs and manufactures a dedicated Xbox product around its own console hardware and operating system.
The ROG Xbox Ally belongs to the first category. It should not be described as a portable Xbox Series X|S, even though it supports Xbox services and can run many PC versions of games associated with Xbox.

They do not prove that Microsoft will never make its own handheld. The separate Project Helix announcement about next-generation Xbox hardware also should not be treated as confirmation of a first-party portable console. Windows Central’s Project Kennan reporting provides that context, while Microsoft’s later Project Helix update concerns the broader next generation of Xbox.
What Microsoft and ASUS eventually released
Microsoft and ASUS announced two models:
- ROG Xbox Ally: the lower-priced model for players who want Xbox integration on a Windows handheld.
- ROG Xbox Ally X: the higher-end version with a faster processor, more memory, more storage, and a larger battery.
Microsoft announced a worldwide launch date of October 16, 2025. The U.S. estimated retail prices were $599.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X. Prices and availability can vary by retailer and region.

The Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme is an eight-core, 16-thread processor with an integrated NPU, according to ASUS’s specifications page. Its 24GB of memory, 1TB SSD, and 80Wh battery make it the more suitable model for demanding games and longer sessions away from a charger. The standard Ally is substantially cheaper, but its 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage leave less room for large modern PC games.
A 1080p, 120Hz display does not mean every new AAA game will run at native 1080p and high settings. Performance depends on the game, resolution, graphics preset, power mode, drivers, thermal conditions, and frame-rate target. Battery life also varies too widely to reduce to one universal runtime without a stated test method.
What makes it an Xbox if it runs Windows?
The Xbox identity is primarily in the software and ecosystem, not in proprietary console hardware.
- Xbox-focused full-screen experience: The device can boot into an Xbox-oriented interface designed for handheld use.
- Xbox controls: It includes a dedicated Xbox button, controller-style grips, and access to Xbox Game Bar and Command Center features.
- Unified access: The Xbox experience can bring supported Xbox and PC games into one library view.
- Account synchronization: Supported saves, achievements, add-ons, and progress follow the player through their Microsoft account.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Eligible games can provide both Xbox and Windows PC access with shared progress and entitlements.
- Remote Play: Owners can stream compatible games from their Xbox console to the handheld.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: Supported games can be streamed over the internet, subject to subscription, region, device, and connection requirements.
- Windows storefronts: Because the handheld runs Windows, it can also access stores and launchers such as Steam, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net.
Microsoft describes the device as a Windows 11 handheld with Xbox Mode rather than a closed console. The official ROG Xbox Ally page and the Xbox handheld compatibility information explain how those layers fit together.
Can it play Xbox console games locally?
Not automatically, and not all of them. The ROG Xbox Ally is not a portable Xbox Series X|S. An Xbox console game can be played in several different ways:
- It may have a native Windows PC version that can be installed locally.
- It may support Xbox Play Anywhere, giving an eligible account access to its PC version.
- It may be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- It may be streamed from the owner’s Xbox console through Remote Play.
Xbox console ownership alone is not a universal license to install every console game on Windows. Compatibility depends on whether a PC version exists, which storefront owns the game, the title’s Play Anywhere status, launchers, anti-cheat systems, and the performance of the handheld.
This is the most important buying qualification. “Xbox handheld” describes the experience and ecosystem integration; it does not mean that an entire Xbox console library becomes a local install library.
Who is the ROG Xbox Ally for?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You already use Xbox, Game Pass, Play Anywhere, or Xbox Remote Play.
- You want a Windows handheld with more Xbox-oriented controls and navigation.
- You value access to multiple PC storefronts.
- You want the lower launch price and can accept 16GB of memory, 512GB of storage, and a 60Wh battery.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You play demanding PC and AAA games.
- You want the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and 24GB of memory.
- You need 1TB of storage for a larger installed library.
- You value the larger 80Wh battery enough to justify the $400 U.S. launch-price difference.
Consider another handheld if:
- You want a simpler, more console-like interface than Windows generally provides.
- You expect every Xbox console game to install locally.
- You prioritize the lowest possible price or are unwilling to manage Windows updates, launchers, drivers, and compatibility issues.
- You would prefer SteamOS, as on Steam Deck, or a different screen and controller design, as offered by alternatives such as Lenovo Legion Go.
Windows gives the ROG Xbox Ally unusual flexibility, but it also brings Windows handheld compromises. Some games open in third-party launchers, some anti-cheat systems can cause compatibility problems, and performance may require adjusting resolution, graphics quality, frame-rate targets, or power settings.

Common problems and what they mean
A game does not appear in the Xbox library
The title may have been installed through another launcher, may not be supported by the library aggregation layer, or may require a manual refresh. The device remains a Windows PC even when Xbox Mode is active.
Recommended Free Tools
An Xbox console game will not install
Check whether it has a Windows PC release or Play Anywhere entitlement. Xbox branding and console ownership do not guarantee a local Windows installation.
Remote Play fails
Check that the console is configured for remote features, is reachable on the network, and is signed into the correct account. Console power settings, NAT, upload speed, and local Wi-Fi congestion can all affect the connection.
Cloud Gaming looks poor or feels delayed
Cloud performance is a network issue rather than a measure of the handheld’s local graphics power. Try a stronger Wi-Fi connection and reduce competing traffic. Streaming latency cannot always be eliminated by changing game settings.
Performance is disappointing
Lower the resolution or graphics preset, set a realistic frame-rate target, change the power profile, and check for game, Windows, and driver updates. A 120Hz screen does not guarantee 120 frames per second.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The battery drains quickly
High brightness, a high refresh rate, demanding games, maximum power settings, and background Windows processes all increase consumption. Neither model has a guaranteed runtime that applies to every game or power mode.

The verdict
The leak was real, but the original implication was too broad. Project Kennan did not turn out to be a Microsoft-manufactured portable Xbox console. It became the ROG Xbox Ally family: ASUS hardware running Windows 11, enhanced with an Xbox-focused interface, controls, account features, cloud access, Remote Play, and PC storefront support.
That makes the ROG Xbox Ally more flexible than a traditional closed console, but less straightforward than one. It is a strong fit for Xbox users who also want a PC handheld, especially those who value Play Anywhere, Remote Play, and access to multiple PC stores. It is not the answer for anyone expecting every Xbox Series game to install locally on a compact Microsoft console.
The larger strategic story is more significant than the leaked casing. Microsoft’s first handheld move was to make Xbox portable across partner hardware. Whether the company eventually builds a separate first-party handheld remains an open question, but the FCC leak itself revealed an ASUS Windows PC—not the portable Xbox many fans initially imagined.
