“There was an error communicating with the Steam servers. Please try again later” means Steam could not complete a connection; it does not identify why. Steam client wording says the cause could be either your internet connection or the Steam network. First work out whether the problem is limited to one feature, device, or account, then try low-risk network and client checks before considering repairs.
What the Steam communication error tells you
The message describes a failed communication, not a diagnosis. Steam client wording says, “This could be due to a problem with your Internet connection, or with the Steam network.” That wording appears in a Steam client language file mirrored by the SteamTracking repository; it is not a current Valve support directive.
The message alone does not prove Steam is down, that your account is restricted, that your password is wrong, or that game files are corrupted. It also does not establish that you need to reinstall Steam. The reviewed material does not confirm a live outage, so check the scope of the failure rather than assuming one.
Where does the error appear?
People have reported similar wording in different situations: Steam Mobile App sign-in and Store or wishlist access, as well as desktop client access, Steam Guard, forums, and account recovery. These reports show that the symptom can occur in different contexts; they do not establish how common it is or that each instance has the same cause.

Note the exact feature and action that failed. Check whether other websites or apps connect normally, and whether another Steam feature works. If you can, compare another device or network. This helps distinguish a broad service or network problem from one tied to a device, client installation, feature, or account.

What to try, from least disruptive to more targeted
- Check the scope. Record where the error appears—such as sign-in, Store, Community, or an account action—and whether other internet services work. A failure in one Steam feature does not by itself mean all of Steam is unavailable.
- Compare a device, network, or feature if available. If the same account fails across devices, or across account-related Steam surfaces, that is useful information to give Steam Support. A community report describes an account-related problem persisting across devices while another account worked on one of the same computers; that is an example of why scope matters, not a diagnosis of your account.
- Reconnect and check network intermediaries. Reconnect to your network. If you use a VPN or proxy, test whether the issue changes when it is temporarily disconnected. You can also check whether firewall or security software is blocking Steam, but do not leave protections disabled as a workaround.
- Restart Steam and retry later. A temporary network or service interruption may clear. The available evidence does not establish whether Steam is currently experiencing an outage.
- Consider client-level repair only if the issue is limited to one installation. Cache or client repair is a possible later avenue, but the available evidence does not verify a Valve-approved, current procedure for this exact error. Avoid deleting game folders or reinstalling Steam as a first response.
- Contact Steam Support for persistent account-wide failures. If the same account fails on multiple devices or on account-related Steam surfaces, include where it fails and which checks you have already tried. Repeating local repairs may not address an issue that follows the account.
