If a newly installed PC game will not open, restart Windows, check the game’s requirements and updates, then use its launcher to verify the installation. Next, look for a security-software block or a specific runtime error. The cause can vary: a game may be crashing immediately even if no window appears, so work through the checks in order rather than assuming the installation—or your hardware—is at fault.
1. Note what happens, then restart Windows
Before changing anything, record the exact error message and whether the launcher briefly changes to “Running” or a similar status. If an error appears, save an uncropped screenshot. If the game’s process appears and then disappears, note that too; an immediate crash can look like the game never launched.
Restart Windows, open the launcher, and try the game once more. Steam recommends starting its general launch troubleshooting after a fresh restart, but a restart is a first check, not a guaranteed fix. Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guide notes that launch failures have many possible causes across different hardware and software configurations.
2. Check the game’s requirements and install updates
Compare your PC with the minimum requirements for the exact game. Check the supported Windows version, processor, memory, graphics hardware and storage. For a Steam game, start with its store page; other launchers and publishers may list requirements on their own support or product pages. A system below the game’s minimum requirements may not run it, as Capcom’s Steam-game troubleshooting guidance explains.

- Install pending Windows updates, then restart if Windows requests it.
- Check for a current graphics driver through Windows Update or the graphics-card manufacturer’s official software or website.
- Make sure the game’s download or update has finished in the launcher before trying again.
Requirements are game-specific. Do not buy or replace hardware based only on the fact that one game will not open; first compare the actual system with that game’s published requirements and look for a specific mismatch.
3. Verify or repair the game through its launcher
Use the launcher’s built-in verification or repair option before deleting game files or reinstalling. Verification checks whether the installed files are correct and can replace missing or damaged files. Menu labels and paths vary by launcher and game.

- Steam: Open the Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam’s file-verification guide explains what the check does.
- Other launchers: Look for an option named Verify, Repair, or Check files in the game’s settings or management menu. If there is no such option, follow that launcher’s or publisher’s official instructions rather than deleting files manually.
Let the check finish, apply any files it downloads, and then try launching again. Rockstar, for example, includes verification steps for its launcher, Steam and Epic versions of GTAV in its GTAV PC troubleshooting guide; its exact steps are specific to that game.
4. Check for a security block or conflicting software
If the error says “Missing Executable”
Check your antivirus or Windows security history for a game file that was quarantined or blocked. Steam identifies security software and an incomplete or corrupted download as possible causes of its “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)” error. Verify the game files through the launcher after checking the security history.

Restore or allow a quarantined file only if you can confirm it belongs to the legitimate game installation and the detection is a false positive. If you are unsure, do not restore it; contact the game publisher or security-software provider. Do not routinely turn off antivirus protection. A publisher may provide game-specific instructions for an exclusion, but follow them only after confirming the file and its source.
If there is no missing-file alert
Close nonessential background utilities—such as overlays, recording tools, or other software that hooks into games—and try once more. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affects the launch. Avoid ending unfamiliar Windows processes or disabling security protections as a general troubleshooting step.

5. Act on a specific DirectX or Visual C++ error
If the error explicitly names DirectX, Direct3D or Microsoft Visual C++, treat that wording as a clue. First check whether the game includes the relevant installer or redistributable, and use the publisher’s instructions. Rockstar, for example, directs GTAV players with certain DirectX or Visual C++ errors to the redistributables included with that game.
If you need a Visual C++ Redistributable installer, use Microsoft’s official download or troubleshooting guidance, such as Microsoft Learn’s Visual C++ Redistributable installation troubleshooting. Microsoft advises using installers downloaded from Microsoft and signed by Microsoft. Avoid third-party “all-in-one” runtime bundles, and do not delete system DLL files to try to clear an error.

6. Contact the right support team with useful details
If the checks above do not resolve the problem, use the game publisher’s support for a game-specific error or the platform’s support for a launcher, account or download problem. Send enough information for support to distinguish a failed launch from an immediate crash.
- Game title, version and launcher.
- The exact error text and an uncropped screenshot, if available.
- Windows version, processor, graphics card, memory and graphics-driver version.
- What you tried and what happened after each step.
- Any logs or diagnostic files requested by the game’s support page.
Some publishers request system reports such as DxDiag; Rockstar’s GTAV guidance also identifies launcher logs and DxDiag or MSInfo. Capcom explains how to save DxDiag and asks for system details in its support instructions. Follow the relevant publisher’s directions rather than sending unrelated files. If general troubleshooting fails and the issue appears tied to your individual PC configuration, Steam also notes that a local PC technician may help.
