If NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered shows “There’s a problem with your game’s setup. Please reinstall your game,” or refuses to launch through Steam or the EA app, a reinstall is not automatically the answer. The message is a general Windows setup failure. The clearest title-specific lead from EA support is missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime files, and EA specifically says to install both the x86 and x64 versions.
Work through the checks in order: confirm that the PC meets the 64-bit Windows 10 baseline, repair the Visual C++ dependencies, run the launcher with the right permissions, verify or repair the game files, and only then escalate with a DxDiag report. The sequence also separates Steam-specific actions from EA app actions so you do not repeat an expensive full download unnecessarily.

What the setup error actually means
The message appears before the game can complete its startup checks. It does not identify one particular broken file, and it is not proof that the installation itself is irreparable. Windows may be unable to load a required runtime, the launcher may lack permission to read or create a file, a game file may be damaged, or the computer may not meet a minimum requirement.

In an EA forum case, the player had already verified files, run DirectX setup, updated graphics drivers, cleared launcher caches, checked Windows system files, tried a clean boot, created a new Windows user, and reinstalled the game. The case still failed. EA Community Manager EA_Barry responded: “Fairly sure the error relates to missing VC++ files, make sure you have installed both the x86 and x64 versions of each.” That is the most specific support direction for this title, but it is not a guarantee that every computer has the same cause.

NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered launched on November 6, 2020. Older games can depend on runtime components that are not present on a newer Windows installation, or that exist in one processor architecture but not the other. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run both 64-bit and 32-bit programs; installing only a 64-bit redistributable therefore does not cover every dependency.
Check the PC baseline before repairing files
Compare your system with the published minimum requirements first. If a requirement is below the baseline, file repair will not turn the computer into a supported configuration.

Steam repeats the 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 11 and 45 GB portions of this baseline. The requirements are minimums, not a promise of a particular frame rate or graphics setting.

Do these quick checks before changing files:
- Write down whether you launch through Steam or directly through the EA app. The repair control is different for each.
- Close the game and exit the launcher. Also close its notification-area or tray process rather than leaving it running in the background.
- Confirm that the drive has the required free space and that Windows is the 64-bit edition.
- Use an account that can install software and approve administrator prompts. Do not disable security software permanently; if it reports a blocked file, record the filename and restore normal protection after testing.
- Do not remove DLL files from
System32orSysWOW64. Do not download replacement DLLs from unofficial sites.
Fix the Visual C++ dependency first
EA’s title-specific support guidance points to missing Visual C++ files and explicitly calls for both processor architectures. Install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages in x86 and x64. The x86 package supports 32-bit components; x64 supports 64-bit components. On 64-bit Windows, you need both when a game or launcher uses a mixture of libraries.

Install or repair both architectures
- Open Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable download page in a browser. Choose the current supported package offered for your Windows version rather than downloading an individual DLL.
- Run the x86 installer. If it offers Repair, choose Repair; otherwise complete the installation.
- Run the x64 installer and use the same Repair or Install option.
- Restart Windows. The restart allows services and applications to load the repaired runtime instead of retaining an old failed process.
- Try the game once through the same launcher you normally use.
If one installer reports that a newer version is already present, the runtime may still be damaged. Use its Repair option when available, then repeat the restart. Installing only x64 is not an equivalent substitute for installing x86 and x64.
Repair the launcher installation
After the runtime check, use the launcher’s own repair workflow. This checks the game in place and is less disruptive than deleting the installation and downloading 45 GB again.
EA app: run Repair
- Exit the EA app completely, including its tray icon.
- Start the EA app with administrator rights: right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
- Open Library and select NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered.
- Open the game’s three-dot menu and choose Repair.
- Allow the scan to finish. If the app downloads replacement files, wait until the operation reaches 100 percent before launching.
- Start the game from the EA app while it is still running with the approved permissions.
Administrator mode is a diagnostic step, not a setting you must use forever. If it works only with elevated rights, a folder permission or security policy is likely involved; avoid granting broad permanent permissions to unrelated folders.

Steam: verify the game files
- Exit the game and restart Steam so no update or download is still in progress.
- Open Library, right-click NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered, and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to compare the installation and reacquire any damaged or missing files.
- Close and reopen Steam, then launch the game. If the title opens an EA sign-in component, allow that component to finish its first-run setup.
A verification result that replaces files confirms that the local installation changed; it does not prove that the Visual C++ runtime or permissions were healthy. Keep both checks in the sequence.

Test permissions without making risky system changes
Windows can block a game from writing configuration files, creating a cache, or starting a helper process. To test that possibility, close the launcher, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and repeat the EA Repair or Steam verification workflow. Then launch once.
If the game starts only when elevated, check the security properties of the game and launcher folders rather than downloading replacement files. A controlled-folder-access rule, antivirus quarantine, or a folder inherited from another Windows account can cause a write failure. Review the security product’s event history and restore any file it incorrectly quarantined. Do not broadly grant “Everyone” full control over the Windows directory or system folders.
Restart and isolate the remaining causes
Restart Windows after the runtime and file checks. A restart clears a launcher process that may have loaded an old library and ensures that pending driver or Windows updates are applied.
Confirm graphics and Windows state
- Install the graphics driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer for your exact card and Windows edition. A driver update is useful when the installed driver is corrupted or too old, but it does not replace the DirectX 11 hardware requirement.
- Run Windows Update and restart if it requests one.
- Check that the display adapter shown in Device Manager > Display adapters is the GPU you expect, not a disabled or generic adapter.
- Disconnect overlays and recording hooks temporarily, including nonessential performance monitors. Re-enable them one at a time after a successful launch.
Use a clean boot only as an isolation test
A clean boot can reveal a conflict with a third-party service, but it is not a game repair. If you choose this test, record which services you disable, restart, and try one launch. Restore normal startup afterward. The forum case that prompted EA’s response had already tried a clean boot and still failed, so a clean boot should not replace the Visual C++ check or file repair.

Do not assume a new Windows user proves the install is fixed
Testing another Windows account can separate a damaged per-user configuration from a machine-wide problem. It cannot correct missing runtimes or unsupported hardware. If the game fails for every account after both redistributables are repaired and files are verified, gather diagnostics rather than repeating the same reinstall.
When a complete reinstall is justified
Reinstall only after the dependency, permission, and file-integrity checks. A reinstall is reasonable when the launcher cannot complete Repair or Verify, the installation directory is on a failing or inaccessible drive, or the files were deliberately removed. Before uninstalling:
- Confirm that your save data and settings are synchronized or backed up according to the launcher and platform you use.
- Note the installation location and available disk space.
- Restart the launcher and Windows before beginning the download.
- After installation, run both Visual C++ architectures and the launcher repair check again if the same message returns.
Repeated reinstalls are not a diagnosis. In the documented case, reinstall attempts did not resolve the setup failure, which is why the runtime and diagnostic steps matter.
Collect a DxDiag report if the error survives the sequence
When standard repairs fail, EA support needs system-specific information. A DxDiag report records the Windows edition, processor, memory, display adapter, driver details, and relevant DirectX diagnostics.

dxdiagand press Enter. - Wait for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to finish gathering information.
- Choose Save All Information and save the text file somewhere you can attach it.
- When contacting EA support, state that the error occurs in NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered, identify Steam or the EA app, list the exact Windows edition, GPU and driver version, and describe which runtime and repair steps completed.
Include the exact wording of the error and whether the launcher shows a repair or verification result. Do not edit hardware or driver lines out of the report; those details help support distinguish a dependency failure from a compatibility problem.
Common approaches that waste time or create new problems
Installing one Visual C++ architecture
Installing x64 alone leaves 32-bit dependencies unresolved. Installing x86 alone leaves 64-bit dependencies unresolved. The EA guidance is explicit: install both.
Deleting a DLL to force the launcher to redownload it
A DLL may be shared by Windows or another application. Removing it can break unrelated software and still leave the game without the correct version. Use the official redistributable installer and launcher repair instead.

Unofficial DLL sites do not establish that the file matches your Windows build, game version, or security requirements. They can also bundle malware. The setup message does not justify that risk.
Running every tool at once
If you update drivers, clear caches, alter services, reinstall, and change permissions simultaneously, you cannot tell which condition changed. Make one controlled change, restart when instructed, and test.
Assuming DirectX setup alone fixes the problem
The game requires DirectX 11-compatible graphics hardware, but a DirectX installer does not supply every Visual C++ runtime or repair a damaged game file. Treat graphics compatibility and runtime dependencies as separate checks.
Choose another platform if the immediate goal is to play
Electronic Arts lists NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. A console edition can be a practical alternative when the computer remains unable to launch the game, but it is a separate purchase or entitlement and may not preserve every PC save or friend connection.

- Identify Steam or the EA app and close it fully.

- Install or repair both x86 and x64 Visual C++ redistributables.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the launcher as administrator for the test.
- Choose EA app Repair or Steam Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart and launch again.
- If it still fails, check driver and security events, then create a DxDiag report for EA support.
- Consider a console edition only after weighing ownership, online access, friends, controls, and save compatibility.
