If you want a game that makes the ocean feel frightening, start with Iron Lung for overt submarine horror or Subnautica for fear built through survival and deep-water exploration. Below Zero brings that survival formula to a frozen alien world, while DREDGE is an eerie fishing adventure spent mostly at sea—not an underwater horror game.
Which deep-water game fits what you want?
| Game | Where you spend your time | How horror-forward it is | Core gameplay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Lung | Inside a one-person submarine beneath the surface | Overt submarine horror | Confined navigation and photographing locations while avoiding a creature |
| Subnautica | Underwater exploration across an alien ocean | Atmospheric fear within a survival adventure | Exploration and survival |
| Subnautica: Below Zero | Both underwater and above the surface | Atmospheric survival adventure in a freezing setting | Exploration, crafting, habitat building, and survival |
| DREDGE | Mostly on the surface, aboard a fishing boat | Sinister, horror-tinged tone | Fishing, boat upgrades, archipelago exploration, and dredging for secrets |
These games approach the deep differently: one traps you in a submersible, two make the unknown part of survival exploration, and one brings an unsettling edge to fishing at sea.

Iron Lung: the most direct submarine-horror premise
Iron Lung puts you in a claustrophobic, one-person submarine navigating an ocean of blood. You photograph locations and hope the creature below does not find you. That sealed-in perspective makes it the clearest fit here if you want a game explicitly built around submarine dread rather than a broader survival adventure. See Iron Lung on Steam.
Subnautica: survival fear in an alien ocean
Subnautica is an underwater survival adventure, not a game formally presented as horror. Its fear comes from being far from land, exploring dark depths, and confronting an ocean floor that drops into an abyss. In a PlayStation Blog interview published November 20, 2018, Unknown Worlds said, “We wanted to make an open-world underwater game where you didn’t kill creatures.” The studio also recounted that fans told the team it had “accidentally made a horror game”—a description of player reaction, not a formal genre label. Read the interview with Unknown Worlds on PlayStation Blog.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Unknown Worlds’ official site says the Subnautica series has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide; it does not specify a year for that figure, and it applies to the series rather than to this game alone. Visit the official Subnautica site.
Below Zero: a frozen setting with above- and underwater play
Subnautica: Below Zero shifts the survival-exploration formula to a freezing alien setting. Set one year after the original, it combines exploration, crafting, habitat building, and survival above and below the surface. Choose it if you want the series’ underwater unease alongside a cold-world setting and time out of the water. Bandai Namco lists standard physical and digital editions and platforms including PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch; availability can differ by region, so check your local storefront. - A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
DREDGE: eerie fishing, mostly on the surface
DREDGE is a single-player fishing adventure with a sinister undercurrent, not chiefly an underwater game. You fish, upgrade your boat, explore an archipelago, and dredge for secrets. It suits players who want an unsettling ocean journey but are happy to spend much of it aboard a boat rather than beneath the waves. Its official site lists console versions and identifies The Iron Rig as an available expansion. Visit the official DREDGE site.
