Some of gaming’s toughest challenges are tucked away in optional bonus stages, secret routes, challenge modes, and late-game chapters. WatchMojo’s editorial roundup, Top 10 Brutal Bonus Levels Only The Best Players Can Beat, picks ten examples whose difficulty comes from very different demands: lethal precision, long enemy gauntlets, scarce resources, or pressure to keep moving. They are editorial picks, not an objective ranking of the hardest levels.
What makes a game level so hard?
There is no single difficulty scale that fits a precision platforming route, a raid, and a hundred-floor enemy gauntlet. A more useful comparison is to ask what the level demands and how its obstacles compound.

- Precision and timing: How exact must jumps, dodges, or inputs be?
- Combat endurance: Does the challenge depend on powerful enemies, bosses, or repeated waves?
- Hazards and visibility: Must players navigate spikes, traps, blind drops, or other threats while fighting?
- Resources and recovery: Can players bring their usual equipment, save, or recover between attempts?
- Length and repetition: How much must be completed, and how costly is a mistake late in the challenge?
By those measures, a stage can be punishing without being difficult in the same way as another. Path of Pain asks for careful platforming; Bloody Palace adds a timer; The Trial of the Sword makes players rebuild their resources from what they find.

Ten punishing bonus levels and challenges
The following are WatchMojo’s picks, presented in the order of its roundup. The year shown is the game’s release year as represented by that article, not the date the roundup was published. “Bonus level” is used broadly here: the list includes hidden routes, optional chapters, DLC, a raid, and a challenge mode.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Blood Stained Sanctuary — Cave Story (2004)
This optional post-boss gauntlet layers spikes, blind drops, difficult enemies, collapsing ceilings, and several bosses. Its sting comes from having to handle hazards and combat together, with the environment itself becoming less safe as the challenge unfolds.
Pit of 100 Trials — Paper Mario series
First appearing in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2000), the Pit is a hundred-floor test of escalating enemy encounters. The roundup notes periodic opportunities to leave or save in The Thousand-Year Door, while Super Paper Mario has two versions. The scale and repeated fights make endurance part of the challenge, not just success in any one battle.
Rank #2
- Tri-mode Connectivity: Wired for Xbox, 2.4G & Wired for PC, and Bluetooth for Android. The G7 Pro supports seamless connectivity across Xbox, PC, and Android. Effortlessly switch between modes using the convenient physical mode switch.
- TMR Sticks: The G7 Pro features GameSir's Mag-Res TMR sticks, combining Hall Effect durability with traditional potentiometer performance. This advanced technology delivers stable polling rates for smooth, drift-free gaming with low power consumption.
- Hall Effect Analog Triggers: The GameSir precision-tuned Hall Effect analog triggers provide unmatched smoothness and linear input for precise control. Featuring clicky Micro Switch trigger stops, gamers can easily switch based on their preferences.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate on PC: Experience ultra-responsive gaming with a 1000Hz polling rate on PC, available through both wired and 2.4G wireless connections. This ensures instantaneous input registration, reducing lag and optimizing your performance for the most competitive gameplay.
- GameSir Nexus App: The G7 Pro is compatible with the upgraded GameSir Nexus app, which brings a significant upgrade over the original. It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
The Vault of Glass — Destiny (2014)
This six-player raid combines enemy waves, stealth, platforming, and boss encounters, so a team must handle several kinds of coordination. WatchMojo also points to a harsher mode that removes teammate revives. That detail describes the roundup’s account of the activity; raid rules can vary across versions and updates, so it should not be read as a statement of the current live game’s rules.
Archdragon Peak — Dark Souls III (2016)
Dangerous enemies lead into the Nameless King encounter, making the area’s culminating fight a major part of its reputation. Calling the Nameless King the “hardest boss” is a matter of opinion, not a measured consensus; the more concrete point is that the route and its endpoint both demand careful play.
Rank #3
- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Apotheosis — Fire Emblem Awakening (2013)
This final DLC level pits players against powerful enemy skills across five waves, with only brief breaks. Its pressure comes from managing a sustained sequence of battles rather than mastering one isolated encounter.
Hectic — Doom 64 (1997)
A compact hidden level, Hectic packs traps, ambushes, puzzles, and limited room to maneuver into a small space. The combination leaves little room to settle into a safe rhythm.
Rank #4

- UP TO 40 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 40 hours of wireless battery life on standard AA batteries. When the batteries run low, plug in the included cable and keep playing without missing a beat.*
Bloody Palace — Devil May Cry 4 (2008)
This multi-floor enemy gauntlet puts a clock on each stretch. Defeating enemies quickly or stylishly replenishes time, tying survival to both combat skill and pace.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Trial of the Sword — The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)
Players enter without their carried weapons, armor, or items, then must survive escalating fights with resources found during the trial. It is a resource-reset challenge: familiar equipment cannot carry the player through, so scavenging and conserving what is found matter alongside combat.
Best Value
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Chapter 9: Farewell — Celeste (2018)
This long, demanding final chapter asks players to master established mechanics while introducing new ones and limiting some movement abilities. Its challenge is cumulative: players have to adapt while sustaining precision over an extended stretch.
Path of Pain — Hollow Knight (2017)
Concealed within the game, Path of Pain is a platforming route built around precision and persistence. Instant-death hazards make mistakes costly, and the route ends with a fight against two Kingsmould enemies. It combines exact movement with a final combat test rather than relying on either alone.

WatchMojo also gives honorable mentions to Stormy Ascent in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Long Journey’s End in Super Mario Odyssey, The Challenge in The Witness, and Aztec in GoldenEye 007. These broaden the list beyond one kind of “bonus stage”: difficult content can take the form of a platforming level, a puzzle challenge, or a demanding mission.
Why these levels challenge different players
The list is best read as a tour of different kinds of difficulty, not a verdict that one stage is universally hardest. A player who excels at combat may still find repeated precision jumps frustrating; someone comfortable with platforming may struggle more with an extended boss sequence or resource limits. Even within a single encounter, phase structure, projectile patterns, and variation can change how a challenge feels. One Indie Gamer Chick review of Cuphead, for example, discusses those factors in Dr. Kahl’s Robot and Funfair Fever as individual player observations, not representative data.
WatchMojo frames its roundup as “our picks for the top 10 brutal bonus levels to punish good players.” That is the publisher’s editorial premise, rather than a claim backed by completion rates or a universal measure of player skill. Its topic also sits within a broader vocabulary of “bonus” and “secret” levels, as reflected in WatchMojo’s secret-level search index.
