Learn weapons in the Training Area, use the Seikret to manage your second weapon, target wounds with Focus Mode, and treat field camps as useful—but vulnerable—outposts. The examples below distinguish game guidance from platform-specific controls; check the current in-game Play Guide for any details that may have changed.
Learn a weapon before deciding whether it suits you
You are not locked into your first weapon choice. Wilds has 14 weapon types, and you can experiment with them rather than assuming the first one you try is your permanent main.
Practice in the Training Area
Use the Training Area to test a weapon’s moves and combos before relying on it in a difficult hunt. For PlayStation players, the Play Guide’s weapon instructions are under Info → Play Guide → Weapon Controls. Menu names and controls can vary by platform, so use the equivalent guide in your version of the game.
Change weapons at camp
Alma can recommend a starting weapon, and you can change weapons at camp. That makes it practical to try another type if the first one does not click. No weapon is universally best; familiarity, the monster, and your approach matter.

Prepare a meal and customize your quick access
Eat before heading into danger
You can prepare meals at base or in the field with the Portable BBQ Grill. Ingredients can grant temporary stat boosts and passive skills, so a meal’s benefit is not permanent. Check the meal options available before a demanding hunt and choose ingredients for the boost or skill you want.
Put frequent actions on the Radial Menu
The Radial Menu can be customized with frequently used items, gestures, and communication shortcuts. Set it up around the actions you reach for most. PlayStation button instructions are platform-specific; do not assume another controller uses the same inputs.
Gather and manage supplies while you travel
Use the Slinger for nearby resources
The Slinger can collect resources from a distance and while you are riding. Keep an eye out for gatherable items as you cross the map, rather than treating every supply stop as a reason to return to base.
Use the Capture Net for endemic wildlife
The Capture Net is for endemic wildlife. It is a separate field tool from the Slinger’s resource gathering, and gives you a way to interact with the small creatures you encounter on an expedition.
Craft where it makes sense
You can craft from a tent or through the main menu. Materials stored in your item box, however, require access to a tent. If a recipe needs something in storage, head to a tent rather than repeatedly trying to craft it in the field.
Use Optional Quests when you need more materials
If an Assignment is over but you still need materials from that monster, an Optional Quest against the same monster is a way to hunt it again. It can be more direct than waiting to encounter the target while exploring.

Use your Seikret for more than getting around
Travel and navigate by map destination
The Seikret can carry you between destinations and help with recovery actions such as sharpening or using items when there is a safe opening. Capcom USA’s Joseph Bustos describes the mount’s map navigation: “Using their strong sense of smell, they can automatically take you to destinations that you specify on your map.”
Bring a second weapon for the hunt
Your Seikret carries a second weapon, letting you switch during a hunt. Choose a pairing for a reason: one weapon might feel more familiar, suit the monster’s behavior, reach a part you want to break, or offer a different elemental property. The best pairing depends on the hunt rather than a fixed ranking.

Dismount when you need to deal damage
Mounted actions are limited. Developer guidance describes the Seikret as a way to reposition and recover, not a replacement for fighting on foot; dismount when you are ready to deal substantial damage.

Use Focus Mode to line up attacks on wounds and parts
Focus Mode helps align the camera and attacks, and highlights wounds. It can also help you aim at breakable parts, making it useful when you want to concentrate damage instead of simply attacking whatever is closest.
Follow up on a wound with a Focus Strike
A Focus Strike can target a wound. The PlayStation guide says destroying a wound stuns the monster and grants bonus resources. Weapon moves and wound interactions are not identical across every situation, so treat this as an opportunity to exploit when it appears, not a guaranteed outcome for every attack.

Pop-up Camps bring many base-camp functions into the field, reducing the need to return to a main base for routine preparation. But each site has a risk rating: monsters may discover and destroy a camp, and repairing it costs Guild Points. Consider the location’s convenience alongside its risk instead of assuming every camp is a safe, permanent stop.

Turn ecosystem encounters into opportunities
Monster encounters in the field can become quests without requiring a trip back to camp. Monster interactions may also create tactical openings, but those moments are situational; observe what is happening rather than counting on a particular encounter to unfold the same way every time.
Dung pods can disperse groups or create space from an attacking monster. Their effect depends on the situation, so use them as a possible way to manage pressure—not as a guaranteed escape.
Use observation tools and the tent’s options
Binoculars can reveal a monster’s crown status, which helps if you are tracking size-related goals. The tent’s BBQ Menu also includes a Rest option to change the time and environment. Rest may be temporarily locked by story progress, and these details can be version-sensitive; check the current in-game Play Guide if an option is unavailable or works differently in your game.
Where to confirm controls and current details
Specific button instructions and some interface details can change by platform or game update. Capcom’s support page, updated July 20, 2026, directs players to the official online manuals: Capcom Support. For the mechanics in this guide, the in-game Play Guide is also a practical reference, especially when checking weapon controls.
