Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has reportedly urged Xbox CEO Asha Sharma to choose a clearer strategy: commit to competing as a console platform, including a stronger role for exclusives and third-party support, or lean into publishing games across platforms. His “Dreamcast moment” comparison describes a possible shift away from hardware—not an announced Xbox decision.
What did Shawn Layden say Xbox should do?
In remarks attributed to Layden during an interview with The Expansion Pass, he framed Xbox’s choice as a question of direction. “You got to pick a lane,” he said, according to IGN reporting republished by Yahoo Finance and GamesRadar.
The first lane would be to make Xbox compelling as a platform: treat the console as a central part of the business, use exclusivity to give players a reason to choose it, and attract meaningful support from third-party publishers. The other would emphasize Microsoft’s role as a game publisher, distributing its titles across platforms rather than making Xbox hardware the defining priority.
What does the “Dreamcast moment” mean?
Layden’s phrase, “This is your Dreamcast moment,” refers to Sega’s decision to leave console hardware behind and focus on software publishing. In his analogy, Xbox could face a strategic choice between defending its identity as a console platform and putting more emphasis on publishing games for multiple platforms. It does not mean Xbox has announced that it will stop making hardware.
