Choose Thornblade when you need a Grass damage dealer whose value comes from timed counters and a stack-powered basic-attack loop. Choose Melloblum when the team needs Grass support, healing, or negative-effect removal, and consider Fragrancier when Dark resistance reduction and team Dark damage are more useful than a Grass DPS slot. There is not enough reliable comparative information about Irisalis to call either creature an objective winner over Thornblade.
The short answer
Thornblade and the creatures most often mentioned alongside it do not all perform the same job. Thornblade is listed on the official Aniimo Wiki as a Grass DPS. Melloblum is listed as a Grass Support, while Fragrancier is a Dark Support. That role distinction should decide your first comparison: a support creature is not a direct replacement for a damage dealer simply because it shares an element or appears in the same discussion.

| Creature | Listed role | Element | What its documented kit emphasizes | Best fit when you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thornblade | DPS | Grass | Stacked basic attacks, timed counter play, critical-rate windows | A direct damage slot and a creature that rewards deliberate timing |
| Melloblum | Support | Grass | Healing, team effects, thorn damage, negative-effect removal | Team sustain and utility rather than another primary attacker |
| Fragrancier | Support | Dark | Healing, Dark resistance reduction, team Dark damage utility | Dark-focused team support and resistance-based setup |
| Irisalis | Comparative data not established here | Not established here | Current official stats, role, and tested performance are not available in the evidence used for this decision | Only after checking its current official information and your own team requirements |
The practical decision is therefore not “which creature has the highest universal tier.” It is “which job is missing from your team, and do you enjoy Thornblade’s timing requirements?” No supported damage-per-second test, difficulty rating, or endgame ranking establishes a universal winner.

The official creature description calls Thornblade a knight with “an unshakable heart” that vows to protect its territory and drive away intruders. Mechanically, that theme appears in a kit that asks you to attack, prepare a defensive response, and spend the resulting resource at the right moment. The creature is not documented as automatically superior to every other Grass option; its distinctive appeal is the way its skills fit together.
How Thornblade’s mechanics fit together
Sword Dance turns skills into a basic-attack payoff
Every skill used grants one Sword Dance stack, up to four stacks. Each stack lasts 15 seconds. A basic attack consumes one stack and deals 180% extra damage. That wording describes a resource loop rather than a permanent passive bonus: using skills creates charges, and basic attacks spend them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In practical terms, Thornblade asks you to monitor three things:
- Stack count: Four is the documented maximum, so additional skill use cannot create an unlimited reserve.
- Time remaining: Every stack has a 15-second duration. Waiting too long can allow a charge to expire before you convert it into a basic attack.
- Attack cadence: A basic attack consumes a stack, so spending charges is part of the rotation rather than something to avoid indefinitely.
The 180% figure should not be read as a complete damage-per-second result. Actual output would also depend on the attack being used, the target, equipment or other game systems, and how consistently stacks are generated and spent. What can be stated from the trait is that Thornblade’s basic attacks become substantially more important after skill use, and that careless timing can waste the trait’s intended value.
Thorny Defense rewards a hit timed at activation
Thorny Defense reduces incoming damage by 20% and counters while active. If Thornblade is attacked just as the skill is used, it also raises critical rate by 30% for 15 seconds. This is the clearest timing test in the kit: activating it early may provide the defensive effect, but activating it as an incoming attack connects is the condition described for the additional critical-rate window.

- COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed
That makes Thornblade especially interesting for players who can read an enemy’s attack timing. The documented benefit is not a blanket claim that the creature is hard to defeat or best in every encounter. It is a reward attached to a specific event: being attacked at activation. If an encounter gives no reliable warning, or if you prefer to activate defenses well before danger arrives, you may receive less of the skill’s conditional value.

Thorny Impact creates another critical-rate window
Thorny Impact increases critical rate by 15% for 15 seconds when it hits. Unlike the activation condition attached to Thorny Defense, this effect is tied to the attack connecting. The duration also gives you a defined window in which to use the rest of your rotation. Because both the Sword Dance stacks and critical-rate effects have timers, Thornblade benefits from a player who keeps track of short windows instead of pressing skills without regard to sequence.
Thorny Rain supplies repeatable rapid attacks
Thorny Rain is a rapid attack that can be used up to three times consecutively. The official description establishes the consecutive-use limit, but it does not provide a complete damage comparison against every other Thornblade option. Treat it as a way to maintain pressure and fit attacks into the creature’s short-duration buffs, not as proof of a superior universal rotation.
Aqua Defense adds a separate counter-stนance condition
The official page also describes Aqua Defense as a counter stance. If Thornblade is struck at activation, it can apply Lockdown. Because the available descriptions present Aqua Defense and Thorny Defense as named abilities with their own effects, do not assume they are interchangeable or that one replaces the other in every situation. Check the current in-game descriptions for their exact availability and interaction after an update.
A practical Thornblade rotation
The following is a mechanics-based way to think about the kit, not a tested damage ranking. It keeps the documented conditions visible while leaving room for the timing of the encounter.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the next meaningful incoming hit. Before activating a counter skill, watch for an attack you can reasonably time. The 20% reduction and counter effect of Thorny Defense are available while it is active; the extra 30% critical rate requires being attacked just as it is used.
- Use a skill to begin building Sword Dance. Each skill grants one stack, and the cap is four. Do not assume that reaching four is always correct if an earlier stack is close to expiring.
- Convert stacks with basic attacks. Spend a stack on a basic attack to obtain the documented 180% extra damage. Continue alternating skill use and basic attacks according to the remaining 15-second duration rather than hoarding charges until they disappear.
- Use Thorny Impact when its hit can matter. A successful hit starts the 15-second, 15% critical-rate increase. Plan subsequent attacks inside that window when possible.
- Fit Thorny Rain into an open attack window. It can be used up to three times consecutively, making it a natural candidate when you have time to continue attacking without interrupting a counter or allowing a stack to expire.
- Reserve Aqua Defense for a strike you can read. Its Lockdown condition is tied to being struck at activation, so using it with no incoming hit may not produce that particular effect.
This sequence is deliberately conditional. The source information does not establish one mandatory button order, frame timing, or optimal damage cycle, and inventing one would imply testing that has not been documented.

When Thornblade is the right team choice
You need a Grass DPS rather than another support
If your roster already has healing and cleansing covered, Thornblade fills a different gap from Melloblum. Its listed role is damage, and its trait gives you a reason to keep attacking after skill use instead of treating basic attacks as filler. The choice is straightforward when the team needs another source of direct damage and you are willing to manage the creature’s short timers.
You enjoy reaction-based defense
Thorny Defense and Aqua Defense both make the timing of an incoming hit relevant. Players who like reading attack tells, deliberately holding a defensive skill, and converting a successful counter into an offensive window are more likely to enjoy Thornblade than players who want a passive defensive button.
You can maintain a skill-to-basic rhythm
The Sword Dance trait has an explicit cap, duration, and spending rule. Thornblade is therefore a poor conceptual fit for a rotation in which skills are pressed continuously while basic attacks are ignored. Its documented payoff appears when you keep the stacks alive long enough to spend them and continue using skills to rebuild the resource.

Melloblum is listed as a Grass Support, so the comparison is about team construction rather than a direct damage duel. Its listed skills provide thorn damage, healing, team effects, and removal of negative effects. Those tools address problems Thornblade’s documented kit does not directly address.
| Team requirement | Why Melloblum fits | What you give up by choosing it instead of Thornblade |
|---|---|---|
| Reliable healing | Healing is part of Melloblum’s documented support function. | You are using a support slot rather than adding Thornblade’s Grass DPS. |
| Negative-effect removal | Melloblum’s listed utility includes removing negative effects. | The team may have less direct pressure from a dedicated damage creature. |
| Grass team utility | Its team effects and thorn damage can support a broader group plan. | You do not gain Thornblade’s Sword Dance loop or counter-timing package. |
| A less timing-dependent role | Support functions can be valuable even when you do not want to bait attacks for a counter. | You may prefer another source of damage if survival and cleansing are already solved. |
There is no basis for saying Thornblade “beats” Melloblum. They are documented for different jobs. Select Melloblum when healing, cleansing, or team effects are the limiting factor; select Thornblade when the limiting factor is a Grass damage slot and you want its timing-oriented play pattern.
When Fragrancier is a better choice
Fragrancier is listed as a Dark Support. Its documented utility includes healing, reducing Dark resistance, and enabling team Dark damage. That makes it relevant when the rest of your group is built around Dark attacks or when resistance reduction is more valuable than adding another Grass attacker.

| Question | Thornblade points toward | Fragrancier points toward |
|---|---|---|
| What element does the damage plan use? | Grass DPS | Dark-focused team damage |
| What does the team lack? | A direct attacker with a stack-and-basic loop | Healing plus Dark resistance reduction and team Dark utility |
| What play pattern do you prefer? | Timing counters and managing 15-second Sword Dance stacks | Supporting allies and setting up Dark damage |
| Is the choice a same-role comparison? | No; Thornblade is listed as DPS | No; Fragrancier is listed as Support |
If your damage dealers are not Dark-based, Fragrancier’s resistance-reduction and team-Dark benefits may be less aligned with your plan. Conversely, if your group is already comfortable with Grass damage and needs Dark setup or healing, Fragrancier can solve a problem Thornblade cannot. The available information does not include a shared test environment that would justify ranking one above the other in every team.
Thornblade versus Irisalis: what can and cannot be answered
The question “Any reason to use Thornblade over irisalis?” is a reasonable roster question, but it is not evidence that one creature wins. The currently established information here does not provide Irisalis’s official comparative stats, build assumptions, role details, or measured performance alongside Thornblade.
That means a responsible answer has two parts:
- Use Thornblade for its documented identity: Grass DPS, Sword Dance stacks, a 180% extra-damage basic-attack conversion, and counter skills whose value depends on activation timing.
- Do not claim a head-to-head result: without current Irisalis data and a like-for-like test, statements that Thornblade is stronger, easier, better for a particular mode, or superior at endgame damage would go beyond the established evidence.
Before replacing one with the other, check Irisalis’s current official listing in your game version and answer these questions:
- Is Irisalis filling the same role, or would changing creatures alter the team’s DPS-to-support balance?
- Does your team need Grass synergy, or would another element improve the group’s actual damage plan?
- Do you want Thornblade’s timed counters and stack management, or would a different rotation suit your control style better?
- Can you compare both creatures at equivalent progression, equipment, and player investment? A comparison at different build levels can mislead even when the role is the same.
- Are you deciding for a specific encounter with known attack timing, or for general use? Thornblade’s conditional counter benefits matter more when incoming attacks are readable.
A decision framework for your roster
Pick Thornblade if most of these statements are true
- You need a Grass DPS rather than healing or cleansing.
- You are comfortable watching 15-second effects and Sword Dance stack count.
- You want to practice activating a counter as an attack arrives.
- You like alternating skills with basic attacks instead of relying on one uninterrupted skill chain.
- Your team can survive without replacing the damage slot with another support.
Pick Melloblum if most of these statements are true
- Your team’s main failure is insufficient healing.
- Negative effects are disrupting your group and removal is valuable.
- You want Grass support and team effects more than another primary attacker.
- You do not want the team’s success to depend on counter timing.
Pick Fragrancier if most of these statements are true
- Your main damage plan is Dark-based.
- Dark resistance reduction would improve the team’s damage window.
- You need healing and team Dark utility in the same support slot.
- You are willing to give up a Grass DPS slot for setup and support.
Pause before choosing Irisalis
- You cannot yet verify its current role and official stats.
- You are relying on a community question as though it were a performance test.
- You would be changing creatures without knowing whether the team needs DPS, support, healing, or an elemental setup effect.
Common mistakes when evaluating Thornblade
Treating the 180% figure as a complete damage verdict
The 180% extra damage applies when a basic attack consumes a Sword Dance stack. It is a trait value, not a published overall DPS result. A meaningful comparison would need equal progression, the same target conditions, the same attack opportunities, and a defined rotation. None of those comparative measurements are established here.
Using Thorny Defense without considering the activation condition
The 20% incoming-damage reduction and counter are useful while the skill is active, but the additional 30% critical-rate effect depends on being attacked just as the skill is used. Activating it long before the hit may still provide the defensive portion while missing the conditional critical window.

Stacks last 15 seconds and are capped at four. The mechanic rewards spending them deliberately, not collecting them indefinitely. If a stack is close to expiring, a basic attack may preserve more value than another skill used solely to approach the cap.

Comparing creatures only by element
Melloblum shares Grass with Thornblade but is listed as Support, while Fragrancier is Dark Support. Element helps determine synergy, but role determines what the creature actually contributes. A support creature can be the better roster choice even when a DPS has a more attractive attack description, and the reverse is true when your team already has enough support.
What to monitor after updates
The official wiki’s Thornblade attributes and skill descriptions are version-sensitive. Recheck the current listing after a balance update, especially:
- Whether the total or individual attributes have changed.
- Whether Sword Dance still lasts 15 seconds, remains capped at four, and retains the 180% extra-damage value.
- Whether Thorny Defense still reduces incoming damage by 20% and grants the same 30% critical-rate window when timed with an attack.
- Whether Thorny Impact’s critical-rate increase remains 15% for 15 seconds.
- Whether Thorny Rain remains usable up to three consecutive times.
- Whether Aqua Defense still applies Lockdown when Thornblade is struck at activation.
These checks matter because a small duration, stack-cap, or percentage change can alter how forgiving the rotation feels without changing Thornblade’s listed role.

Use Thornblade when you want a Grass DPS built around a clear timing game: generate Sword Dance with skills, spend stacks on enhanced basic attacks, and look for incoming hits that can be answered by Thorny Defense or Aqua Defense. Use Melloblum for Grass healing, team effects, thorn damage, and negative-effect removal. Use Fragrancier when Dark resistance reduction, healing, and team Dark damage utility fit your lineup better.
For Irisalis, the evidence supports a role-and-play-style decision, not a winner declaration. Until current, comparable Irisalis information is available, Thornblade’s strongest reason to exist on your roster is its documented kit—not an unverified claim that it defeats another creature in every situation.
