Those Who Remain is a story-led psychological horror adventure whose unsettling setting and themes of guilt, redemption, and judgment have drawn interest from some critics. Reviews are mixed, however: critics have also faulted its mechanics and execution. It is a better fit for players drawn to atmosphere and moral choices than for those seeking consistently polished puzzles or survival-horror gameplay.
What is Those Who Remain?
Released on May 28, 2020, Those Who Remain is a single-player psychological horror adventure developed by Camel 101 and published by Wired Productions. The PlayStation Store lists it as an adventure and horror game for PS4; Xbox lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming; Steam lists a PC version. The PlayStation Store listing, the Xbox listing, and the Steam listing provide platform details.
The story takes place in Dormont, a sleepy town swallowed by darkness. The official PlayStation description says players explore two interconnected dimensions, solve puzzles, and make choices involving lost souls. Xbox describes it as a story-driven first-person psychological thriller and invites players to “Confront uncomfortable horrors, keep your sanity in check and survive the night.” That is store copy, not a critical assessment.
What do reviews say?
Critic and player scores offer different snapshots, and neither tells the whole story. Metacritic’s all-platform critic aggregate was 49/100 from 27 reviews on October 8, 2026, which it labels “Generally Unfavorable.” Its separate user score was 5.8/10 from 53 ratings on that date. Steam showed 69% positive from 603 user reviews, labeled “Mixed,” when accessed on October 8, 2026. These are changing snapshots, and the sites use different samples and scoring systems, so the figures should not be compared as if they were equivalent. See Metacritic and Steam for their live listings.

- Choose to help any Surviving citizens of dormont you encounter or leave them
- keep your sanity in check as you Delve deeper into the darkness of dormont
- your decisions and choices will determine the fate of Edward
- navigate and survive the encroaching darkness
- pave your way ahead by moving between dormont and its dark otherworldly counterpart
The critic reactions help explain the mixed reception. The listed reviews show interest in the game’s themes of guilt, redemption, and judgment, alongside complaints about clunky design and gameplay. One critic characterized it as “a puzzle game disguised as a survival horror”; another argued that a promising premise was held back by gameplay problems. Those are individual critical judgments, not a consensus about every player’s experience. The review roundup is available at Metacritic’s critic-review listing.
Who is most likely to enjoy it?
The game is most likely to appeal if you want a story-led horror experience centered on a dark, unusual setting, puzzles, and morally charged choices. If you prioritize smooth, consistently engaging mechanics or puzzle-solving above narrative atmosphere, the cited criticisms are a reason to temper expectations. This is a conclusion drawn from the official premise and published reviews, not a firsthand playtest.
Rank #2
- Darkness has eyes - navigate and survive the encroaching darkness and stay in the protection of the light by any means.
- Worlds torn asunder - pave your way ahead by moving between dormont and it's dark otherworldly counterpart to further solve the mysteries held within the dark.
- Conscience of choice - choose to help any surviving citizens of dormont you encounter or leave them to the darkness. Innocence cannot always be assumed, and the township of dormont hides a cursed Trove of secrets.
- Savour your sanity - keep your sanity in check as you delve deeper into the darkness of dormont - expected rules of the real world have been torn apart.
- Follow your path - your decisions and choices will determine the Fate of Edward, through multiple different branching outcomes.
When weighing it against another horror adventure, consider the qualities that reviews distinguish rather than assuming the games are interchangeable:
- Narrative and themes: whether guilt, redemption, and judgment are the kind of story material you want.
- Atmosphere and tension: whether Dormont’s psychological-horror premise is more important to you than constant action.
- Puzzles and stealth: how much you value those mechanics, given the critical complaints about gameplay.
- Technical and design polish: whether clunky execution would undermine your enjoyment.
- Replay value: whether seeing alternate outcomes matters to you.
How much replay value does it have?
The critic-review listing reports two endings. One reviewer felt the story was worth completing once but was less convinced that seeking the second ending would motivate a replay. That is an individual critical view; the source does not establish how players generally feel about replaying the game. See the review listing.

Platforms, price, and edition notes
Storefront availability and pricing depend on platform and region. When accessed, the official U.S. PlayStation Store listing showed $19.99 for the PS4 version; this may change and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. A February 26, 2020 PlayStation Blog announcement from Camel 101 co-founder and producer Ricardo Cesteiro said a retail-exclusive Deluxe Edition would include a digital download of the illustrated comic prequel Those Who Remain: Lights Out. The announcement originally gave a May 15, 2020 release date, while current PlayStation and Xbox store listings give May 28, 2020. The blog establishes what was announced, not whether that edition or comic is currently available.
