The headline lot was a PSA 10 Mew #1 at $840,000. The figures are secondary reporting. Primary auction listings and completed-sale records were not available to confirm them independently, so the numbers below are presented as reported, not verified.
The three cards and the reported prices
Polygon named three cards from the 2001 English Southern Islands collection. All three were reported as PSA 10 examples.
| Card | Set number | Grade | Reported sale price | Source of figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Holo Mew | #1 | PSA 10 | $840,000 | Polygon, October 2026 |
| Holo Togepi | #4 | PSA 10 | $168,000 | Polygon, October 2026 |
| Holo Marill | #11 | PSA 10 | $168,000 | Polygon, October 2026 |
The $1.176 million combined figure is simple addition of those three prices. It is not a separately published auction-house total. Men’s Journal independently reported the Mew and Togepi amounts, but the Marill price appears only in Polygon’s coverage.
What the Southern Islands collection is
Southern Islands is an 18-card Pokémon Trading Card Game collection. Serebii lists its release period as July 31, 2001 and includes Mew, Togepi, and Marill in the set. A specialist set history describes the English release as a Wizards of the Coast retail product dated July 31, 2001. According to that history, which cites an archived Wizards of the Coast FAQ, the package contained all 18 cards, six postcards, protective sleeves, and three randomized booster packs. The same history gives a suggested retail price of $19.99.

Because it was sold as a retail collection rather than a tournament or store-promotion set, the “promo” label in the headline is loose. These are collection cards. The artwork was designed so that images on several cards connect into larger island scenes, which is useful context for collectors who value complete sets. That design is not evidence of why any card sold for a particular price.
How the reported total was built
The three reported prices sum to $1,176,000. The Mew sale alone accounts for more than two-thirds of that total, so the headline figure depends heavily on a single lot. Readers comparing the story with other coverage should note that the total is an addition of individual reports, not a figure published by an auction house.

Population claims
Polygon reported that 20 PSA 10 copies of the Mew #1 exist worldwide. That count was not checked against a live PSA population report for this article, so it should be read as Polygon’s figure. Grading population matters because scarcity of a specific grade is a major reason a card’s price can diverge sharply from copies in lower condition.
Earlier sales and why they do not establish a trend
Men’s Journal reported two earlier sales for comparison. Those comparisons are useful for seeing how far the reported October prices sit from earlier transactions, but they do not establish a sustained market trend.

| Card | Earlier reported sale | Date of earlier sale | Later reported PSA 10 price | Grade of earlier sale |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mew #1 | $85,000 | July 2026 | $840,000 (October 4 result) | Not stated in the reporting |
| Togepi #4 | $9,300 | June 2025 | $168,000 (October result) | Not stated in the reporting |
The grade and condition of the earlier sales are not given in the reporting, so the two earlier prices cannot be treated as like-for-like comparisons with the PSA 10 results. Men’s Journal itself raised questions about how quickly prices moved, and a single high-profile result should not be read as a general price level for these cards.
What to check before trusting a figure like this
Collectors and readers who want to confirm a headline auction result can look for the following:
Rank #4
- 10 Foil Cards + 1 Bonus Rare Card + 1 Extra Foil Card Energy
- 12 Cards in Total
- English Trading Cards
- The auction house’s lot page, showing the card’s description, certification number, and closing price.
- The sale date and whether the price includes buyer’s premium and fees.
- The PSA certification lookup for the cert number, confirming the grade and card identity.
- PSA’s population report for the specific card and grade, to test claims about how many copies exist.
- Whether the lot was a single card or part of a bundle or multi-lot sale.
None of these checks were completed for the figures in this article. Until they are, the reported prices remain attributed secondary reporting.

Collector listings for the Mew #1, Togepi #4, Marill #11, and the full 18-card set can be found by searching those names. Grade, language, condition, seller, and price vary widely. A search for these cards will not turn up the PSA 10 examples that sold at auction, and the reported auction prices should not be used as a guide to what an ordinary copy is worth.
