Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a story-led Witcher RPG, not a conventional action game starring Geralt. It follows Queen Meve through war and an approaching Nilfgaardian invasion, with exploration, consequential choices, camp development and tactical battles built on GWENT mechanics. GameSpot lists a 9/10 review score and reports a Metacritic score of 85, but those figures are signals rather than a complete picture of critical opinion.
What kind of game is Thronebreaker?
Thronebreaker tells a Witcher-universe story centered on Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia. CD PROJEKT RED describes Meve’s adventure against the backdrop of war and an approaching Nilfgaardian invasion. It is not a Geralt-led mainline action game: its main activities are exploration, resource gathering, making decisions, developing a war camp and playing card-based battles. The official game page describes choices that can reshape the world and lead to outcomes including desertion, betrayal or death.
How much of it is a card game?
Card battles are central, not an optional side activity. They use mechanics adapted from GWENT: The Witcher Card Game for story encounters, alongside exploration and RPG progression. The studio advertises “100+ tailor-made card battles”; that is a publisher-stated figure, not an independent count.
Is it a full Witcher RPG?
It is a narrative RPG in the Witcher setting, but readers expecting the real-time combat and play style of a mainline Witcher action RPG should know that battles here are card-based. The appeal is the combination of Meve’s story, choices, exploration and tactical card play.

What do the review scores say?
GameSpot’s listing gives the game a 9/10 review score and reports a Metacritic score of 85. The latter is a score reported by GameSpot, not an independently verified Metacritic figure here; aggregator scores can change. These numbers offer two score signals, not a universal consensus or a substitute for reading reviews that match your tastes.
The GameSpot page is a listing rather than the full review text, so it does not establish the outlet’s specific reasons for its score. The available evidence also does not establish a broad review consensus. GameSpot lists the first release date as November 9, 2018 and categorizes the game as a card game; its listing notes blood, crude humor, language and violence.

How long is the campaign?
CD PROJEKT RED advertises “30+ hours of gameplay” on the official game page. Treat this as the publisher’s figure, not a guaranteed completion time or an independently measured average. The same page lists 100+ tailor-made card battles, giving a sense of the amount of story combat the game is designed to include.
Which platforms is it on?
GameSpot’s listing identifies PC, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The publisher’s launch announcements document historical release dates, not present-day store stock: the PC launch announcement said PS4 and Xbox One versions would follow on December 4, 2018, while the Steam announcement gave November 9, 2018 as the Steam launch date. The official game page is the publisher’s general game information; check the relevant regional storefront for current availability and terms.

Is there a physical Nintendo Switch edition?
CD PROJEKT RED Support says Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is available exclusively in digital form on the Nintendo eShop. That support article was last updated approximately six years before October 8, 2026, so check the current listing for your region if the format matters to your purchase. The available information does not establish physical-format availability for other platforms.
What digital extras are included?
The official game page and launch announcements list digital collectibles including the soundtrack, concept art (including a map of Lyria), a Fox Children graphic novel from Dark Horse and a 216-page GWENT: The Witcher Card Game artbook. The publisher warns that items may vary between platforms, so do not assume every edition includes every extra. The Steam launch announcement names soundtrack composers Marcin Przybyłowicz, Mikolai Stroinski and Piotr Adamczyk.

The October 2018 PC launch announcement specifically says the PC edition included the Fox Children graphic novel digitally. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Consider it if: you want a Witcher story focused on a different protagonist, consequential choices, exploration and camp progression, and you enjoy tactical card combat.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a conventional real-time action adventure or do not want card battles to be a core part of play.
CD PROJEKT RED Game Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz described the game as “a true-born RPG, and a Witcher world adventure to boot” in the studio’s October 23, 2018 PC launch announcement. That is the developer’s framing; the practical distinction for players is that this RPG’s battles are built around GWENT-style cards.
