Spoiler warning: This guide covers Connections puzzle #355, released Friday, May 31, 2024. Start with the graduated clues below if you want a nudge before seeing the categories and answers.

Hints for Connections #355

Try each clue before moving to the next. They follow the puzzle’s color order, from yellow to purple.

  1. Think about the combined output of an artist or writer.
  2. These are peaks.
  3. Consider the parts that make up a vinyl record package.
  4. SPRAY PAINT and ORANGE JUICE would also fit this group.

The 16 words

BODY, MARACA, JACKET, HOOD, SLEEVE, FUJI, CANON, HANDS, INSERT, POLAROID, OLYMPUS, WORKS, WHITNEY, SNOWGLOBE, OEUVRE, RECORD.

Answers for Friday, May 31, 2024

Color Category Words
Yellow CORPUS BODY, CANON, OEUVRE, WORKS
Green MOUNT ____ FUJI, HOOD, OLYMPUS, WHITNEY
Blue COMPONENTS OF AN LP INSERT, JACKET, RECORD, SLEEVE
Purple THINGS PEOPLE SHAKE HANDS, MARACA, POLAROID, SNOWGLOBE

Why the word overlaps are tricky

Several words suggest camera brands: FUJI, CANON, POLAROID and OLYMPUS. But they do not form a group here. CANON belongs with words for a body of work; FUJI and OLYMPUS are among the mountains; POLAROID joins HANDS, MARACA and SNOWGLOBE in the group of things people shake. That split is a useful reminder to test a possible theme against all four words rather than settling on a plausible-looking pair.

How Connections works

The New York Times describes Connections as a word game about finding themes between words. Each puzzle presents 16 words to sort into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded: yellow is generally easiest and purple trickiest. There is exactly one solution, although words may appear to fit more than one category. NYT says its editors curate categories using the Oxford Dictionary.

The daily puzzle is available free to play, and a new puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. NYT lists the Games app, nytimes.com/games/connections, nytimes.com/theathletic and the News app as places to play. The archive, which includes puzzles from June 12, 2023 onward, and Connections Bot are subscriber features; eligibility varies by feature and subscription type.
