“Tinker crafting” usually means making and upgrading modular tools with Tinkers’ Construct, a Minecraft mod—not a single vanilla crafting recipe. In Tinkers’ Construct 3, you progress from a Part Builder and Tinker Station to casting, a Smeltery, and later materials. Recipes vary by Minecraft version and modpack, so use the guidebook and recipe viewer installed with your pack rather than assuming an older tutorial applies.
What “tinker crafting” means
Tinkers’ Construct lets you assemble tools from separate parts and modify them as you find new materials. The parts, available tools, and upgrade rules depend on the mod version and any additions made by a modpack. How to start crafting in Tinkers’ Construct 3
1. Read the in-game guidebook
Craft Materials and You, the mod’s guidebook. Its information adapts to the material list available in your modpack, making it a better starting point than a recipe copied from a different pack. 2. Make a Part Builder and Tinker Station
The Part Builder turns patterns and materials into tool parts. Put a pattern and a suitable material into the interface, then select the part you want to make. Early materials include wood and stone; the available choices are determined by your installed version and pack.
Combine parts at the Tinker Station to assemble small tools. The mod’s options include tools for mining, melee combat, ranged combat, and armor. As you explore and unlock materials, you can make different parts and apply many modifiers directly at the station. Developer overview

3. Move on to melting and casting
For the next tier, make Seared Bricks using grout. The guide describes grout as equal parts sand, gravel, and clay. A Melter uses furnace fuels, while stronger ores may require lava. You can pour molten material into casts to make tool parts: sand casts are temporary, while gold casts are permanent. 4. Build a Smeltery for larger-scale processing
A Smeltery processes multiple ores and can mix molten metals into alloys. Alloys can open up additional tools and stronger modifiers at the Tinkers’ Anvil. 5. Continue into Nether resources and the Foundry
The guide identifies cobalt as a resource to seek in the Nether. Later progression can also involve blazing blood, which supports advanced materials and can be obtained from blazes through smelting or particular weapons. The documentation describes ichor and piglin bartering as another route. A Foundry is an alternative to a Smeltery: it does not alloy metals, but melting ores can produce byproducts. Why older Tinkers’ Construct recipes may not work
Tinkers’ Construct 3 changed the crafting layout from Tinkers’ Construct 2. The stencil table and Part Builder were merged, the old Tool Station became the Tinker Station, and the Tinkers’ Anvil handles broad tools and all modifiers. The progression also moves from starting materials toward advanced alloys or access to the End. Check compatibility before installing
Tinkers’ Construct is client-and-server software, and its supported Minecraft versions and mod loaders depend on the specific release. Mantle is required; Just Enough Items is recommended for viewing recipes. Match the mod release, Minecraft version, loader, and required dependencies in your launcher or modpack. For example, the cited Modrinth release 3.6.1.85 is a Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 Forge build that requires Mantle. Release 3.7.1.155 is marked Beta for Java Edition 1.18.2 Forge; its page notes that book tool pages show additional tool-crafting requirements. Find the recipe for your specific modpack
- Check the Minecraft version, mod version, and loader shown for the installed profile.
- Open Materials and You in the game and follow the entries available in that pack.
- Use a compatible recipe viewer to inspect the recipe for the item or material you need.
- If a recipe or material is missing, check whether the modpack includes the relevant content or an addon; do not assume a recipe from another pack applies.
