The right meaning depends on context.
What does “tint” mean?
A color tint is made by mixing a color with white, making it lighter. A shade, by contrast, is made by mixing a color with black. The distinction is used in discussions of color and design; see Tint, shade and tone.
For cars, “window tint” generally refers to film applied to glass or a treated-glass effect. It can change the appearance of the windows and affect how much visible light and solar energy pass through. Capital One Auto Navigator explains this automotive use.
What does VLT mean for car-window tint?
VLT, or visible light transmission, is the share of visible light that passes through the filmed glass. A higher VLT means more light passes through and the tint looks lighter; a lower VLT means less light passes through and the appearance is darker. VLT describes light transmission, not every aspect of a film’s heat or UV performance. 3M’s support page defines VLT alongside other film measures.

How do automotive tint types differ?
Film names describe broad construction categories, not guaranteed performance. Products within a category can differ by manufacturer, so compare the specifications for the exact film rather than relying on the category name alone. AAA’s overview and LLumar’s FAQ describe common types.
- Dyed: A common, generally lower-cost type. AAA notes that dyed film can fade over time.
- Metallized: Uses metal particles and can have a reflective appearance. Metalized film may interfere with GPS, radio, or cellular signals, according to Capital One.
- Carbon: AAA describes carbon film as offering more heat reduction than dyed film. Capital One notes that carbon film avoids the signal-interference concern associated with metalized film; check the specific product’s specifications.
- Ceramic: A higher-priced category in AAA’s general comparison. The name alone does not establish a particular level of heat rejection or UV protection.
- Clear or crystalline: Clear films can alter performance without the visibly dark appearance associated with conventional shades. LLumar lists clear constructions and says clear tint can be used on windshields, subject to local rules.
Which performance figures should you compare?
Darkness is only one consideration. Compare the precise metrics shown for each product, because they describe different things. 3M distinguishes VLT, total solar energy rejection (TSER), UV rejection, infrared measures, and glare reduction in its technical support information. In particular, check whether an infrared claim is IRR or IRER: 3M defines them using different wavelength ranges, so an unspecified “heat rejection” figure is not a sound basis for comparing films.

- VLT: Visible light passing through the glass.
- TSER: Total solar energy rejected.
- UV rejection: The stated reduction in ultraviolet transmission.
- Infrared performance: Check the exact metric and wavelength range used.
- Glare reduction: A separate measure from VLT and heat performance.
- Practical fit: Consider signal compatibility, durability, price, and whether the film is legal for your vehicle and location.
Manufacturer maximums are not universal guarantees. 3M advertises up to 99% UV rays blocked and up to 60% solar energy rejected across its automotive film range; those are manufacturer claims, not proof that every film or installation reaches those figures. LLumar says its products block over 99 percent of UV rays, also a manufacturer-stated benefit. See 3M’s automotive film page and LLumar’s FAQ for their respective claims.
Are darker tints legal?
There is no single legal VLT threshold that applies everywhere. Rules can vary by jurisdiction, window position, vehicle, and other local requirements. Check the current rules where the car is registered before choosing a shade; both AAA and LLumar note that requirements vary by location.

Should you install window tint yourself?
Film is typically applied to the interior surface of automotive glass, according to LLumar. DIY installation can be difficult: AAA warns that bubbles, creases, and uneven application can result. If you hire an installer, confirm the product and shade comply with local rules and ask for specifications for the exact film being installed.
